Infant right handed left handed can you tell this early?
My dad was over the past few days and noticed that DD was favoring using her left hand more than her right for a lot of things, mainly picking up her food while she was eating....I am curious if you can tell if they will be left handed or right handed so early on...DD is 11 months...she also uses her left hand to lift herself up grab things etc...

We knew from the moment we took our DD home she was right handed. She favored her ride side for everything on only sucked on her right thumb too!

thats so interesting, no one is left handed in our family, but my parents said that I started to use my left hand more and they were taught to "correct" it back in their country and I tend to be more "right brained" interesting...I hope I have a little creative maven on my hands...

Handedness isn't truly determined until age 3-4; it's common for children to switch off until this time

Yeah that's what I heard.
AJ favors her left some weeks.. her right on others. Feeds herself with both. I would tend to think she is leaning towards right but I think that's cause both of us are right handed so we treat her as if she were right handed too - putting the sippy cup on her right, hand her the lovey on the right, lay her on her right, etc. A totally unconscious behavior but it may shape her later... *shrug*
Right or left I dont care... god knows she'll end up with our horrible handwriting! LOL

Re: Infant right handed left handed can you tell this early?
An OT told us to keep making sure to give him opportunities to use either hand until he is 6. Even if he prefers one hand, we should try to keep up the strength on both sides. I am left handed and I suspect that my son is but it is not an extreme preference yet. My mom says that I made it very obvious at a very young age. It makes sense because I feel like I am not just a lefty but I am an extreme lefty! I do nothing right handed at all.

DD always favored her left hand (but still used both) and now that she is 3.5 - it is clear she is actually a righty, not a lefty.

DS favored his left hand until 18 months. I would have swore he was going to be a lefty. I have a lot in my family. But then at 18 months he switched to the right hand and still a righty even more so now at almost 2.5.

Re: Infant right handed left handed can you tell this early?
ds has always favored his left and when ever you put something in his right he will immediately switch to his left.. though it wouldnt surprise my fil is a lefty, my father should have been a lefty, and my nephew is a lefty

Since DD was 5 weeks old I thought she was left handed. Im convinced she is. she absolutely favors it--feeds herself with it, picks things up with her left...to me it seems pretty clear.

I agree...as an OT I tell parents that hand dominance isn't definite till the child is around 5-6 yrs

Re: Infant right handed left handed can you tell this early?
thanks ladies...it does make sense that it will be determined later on, but meanwhile after doing my "professional" research called googling...some say that handedness is determined in the womb, but I guess doesn't truly come out until later... I don't care either way, just found it interesting...

Right now I think that DS favors his left hand but he uses both. My DH writes lefty but is ambidextrous for just about everything else (although he has his preferences) so we shall see!!

Re: Infant right handed left handed can you tell this early?
I have been doing a lot of reading on this lately....
The old thought was that children tend to go back and forth until age 3 or 4...
But I have been finding some literature that says that while children do tend to go back and forth until this time most will show a preference by 18 months or so...
There is one theory involving individuals that are left handed. The theory is that people that are left handed were actually a set of identical mirror twins and the other twin failed to develope/implant.

I've heard this theory too.
Christopher is most likely left handed, he has always used his left hand and really favors it now at 2.5
Interestingly....my mom and all of her maternal cousins are left handed, no one in my generation is, but DS is and my cousin's two are...

thats sooo weird...we have some distant set of twins and when I first got pregnant my grandmother kept saying it's twins identical girl twins..it was weird, bc my grandmother is usually dead on about things..she called that DD would be a gilr and some other really really random things in my life she has dreamt about and they've all come true
