i think it is wonderful and agree there should be more state and gov aide.

BUT...and IMO this is a BIG BUT. I do not believe in a lot of the different "alternative therapies that i have seen and heard of parents doing. And i do NOT believe that the gov/state or insurances need to pay for these OFF the wall alternative therapies. I mean i am actually sickened by some of these things people call "therapy these days and do not believe a child should be even subjected to, Chat Icon

Can you give examples of the alterantive therapies you don't agree with? I haven't personally heard of any outlandish types of therapy.

Oh

Well, if it actually makes a difference for the child, and helps him/her I'm all for it! Chat Icon I'd rather have government funds go to help children than pay for million dollar bathrooms in National Parks or politician shower curtains Chat Icon

and i agree i think the gov should be paying for more. But i do not believe in some of these crazy alternative therapies out there. And nor do i think the gov should be responsible to pay for those

ETA. it is down right outrageous that some parents have to also have their child diagnosed with a duel diagnose to get services.

Get services through where? EI, the school district? If someone couldn't get services based on JUST a diagnosis of Autism, there is something wrong with the district and they should be sued.

did you ever see an arm of a child going through UNENDING allergen testing?

month after month after month getting at least 20-25 shots in their little arms to see if that is what is making them act they way they are.

sickening
Kilation alone IMO is just terrible and has not proven IMO to be effective at all

Re: Interesting Article on Autism

It's chelation and I have never read enough on it to see if it works to be honest. I have heard that children with Autism do have high levels of heavy metals in their blood though so it would make sense to try it I suppose.

The allergy testing, there are only so many things they can test for, so for them to be tested 25 times each month, yeah that seems a bit excessive and I'm surprised a doctor would even do that month after month!

Interesting, although I don't think that's common practice at all. Services are based on their delays, not necessarily the actual diagnosis, and some of the delays that come with Autism are pretty profound. My son never had a diagnosis of anything and received many services.

I've heard nothing but GREAT things about Longwood SD special education! My co-worker has a child with special needs that was in Longwood and she had nothing but positives to say. We were actually just talking about this yesterday. They are supposed to be one of the best ones on LI. That's sad to hear that they are giving your friend a hard time. Maybe he should get an advocate that can help him get the services his child needs

maybe you are right and i will tell him. Just last week he went to several interviews just to get his child into some daycare so he can go to work. He is a single father with an autistic child and has spoken to several social workers and to no avail ...Chat Icon

Diane,
I hope because you work for the district you will be entitled to a little vip from the district because i can tell you first hand that Longwood is definitly NOT generous with services.. and i have had to fight and fight hard for the very little services that they have provided my son and they still fail to give him even what is on his 504 plan. Better luck to you..Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon

ETA: My husband and I are moving out of this district for this very reason!

Re: Interesting Article on Autism

I didnt read the article but I feel the need to comment about some of the above posts. We have friends that have an autistic child and they have used both chelation and a hyperbaric chamber. It's hard to say if either had an effect because they do so many thing in an effort to help their child. i dont think that either is cruel in any way, shape or form, and they were actually living with us while their child was undergoing chelation, so I saw firsthand how it impacted their child. They are the most loving parents that you would ever meet and they would never subject their child to something that was cruel. I am sure that there son has undergone a lot of allergy testing as well since he happens to have a lot of food allergies. I think it's easy to sit in judgement of people or the things they might do when you arent in the situation but I can tell you that at least some of the people who try these things are doing so in the best interest of their child. And, the child I am talking about is doing really well so who knows, maybe these things do have a positive effect.

Re: Interesting Article on Autism

I didn't want to start controversy with this post, I just thought the article was interesting and there was soooo much discussion in the past few weeks about it.

That said . . . as for ANY School District and a 504 plan . . . 504 plans are not regulated the way special education is. Translation: 504 services are not mandatory and can be pulled at any time.

As for Longwood itself, it is not the best in terms of special ed services but it is certainly NOT the worst Suffolk County has to offer. IF you have a good advocate you can get great services from Longwood, but you MUST have someone that is well versed in the lingo and the types of services that can be made available so you know what to demand.
