I mentioned before, my boss is retiring. I was looking for gift suggestions either from me only, or something I can split with a co-worker. At that time, there was no gift from the staff being planned. Now, the guy that is taking over for my boss has suggested that $100 be collected from each staff member (there are 9 of us) towards a gift. Is that too much? Chat Icon The rest of the staff does not know about the suggestion of $100 yet.

I agree. I suggest that you don't contribute and buy something on your own. Chat Icon

Way too much. The big gift should be coming from the company - NOT the employees.

Amount is depending on how many employees are going in. I would think $25/pp would be enough.

That definitely is too much. I think $50 the most is appropriate.

OK, I am the only doofus who clicked on "suggest an amount" Chat Icon

I think $20-30 pp is PLENTY. If I liked my boss a lot and no one was doing anything for him, I might spend $50 - 100 for an individual gift, but $100 pp is excessive for a collection, IMO.

IMO, $100 per person is ridiculous from employees.

To add more info, right now the retiree isn't very well liked by anyone but me. It might be a beyatch to even convince the staff (there are 9 of us) to shell out ANYTHING for him. The company is giving him a big gift, a $1500 Amex Gift Card.

Ok, I have to ask. For the ones that voted that is the norm, what industry are you in? FM me if you are not comfortable posting it.

I wopuld say $25 a piece is more than enough! If the one who offers say no, then oh well. You can take those $25 and spend them on yourself!

That seems like a lot to me. I would think something in the $20-30 region per person would be more appropriate.

Re: Is $100 too much for a retirement gift? W/Poll

That's insane. We have about 30 people in our dept. and for Bridal/Baby Showers and what not I ask for $5.

If there were 9 of us I would ask for $20 each but I would say like... if we each chipped in $20 we could get so and so this....

$100 each is way too much and I think he has some nerve asking for it.
