What was/is your relationship like with your boss?
I don't think $100 is that outrageous. When my boss retired I gave her a $100 gift card to a restaurant and she wasn't somebody I worked with daily.

I would say we are friendly, but not friends, if that makes sense. I have worked here for 4 years.

I think it's a bit much. Retirement parties I've been to haven't been more than $50, and that included dinner AND money towards a gift.
