Is 13 1/2 months too old for CIO..I'm at my wits end!
DS is 13 1/2 months and I can count on my hands the number of times he has slept thru the night. He is in our room in his crib & last night he was up 4x between 11 and 4:30. I honestly think that he wakes up, sees me and that's why he starts crying and fussing. He has even taken the binky out and tossed it at our bed!
I'm not sure how to handle it. I try not not pick him up but it's become impossible to get any rest if I don't. He does fall asleep in my arms with a bottle every night and I put him right down a few minutes I just don't know if he's too old for CIO or what else I should try.
Help! TIA!

Is there a reason why he's in your bedroom? I don't think he's too old to do it CIO, but with him in your bedroom, it will be very difficult.

Re: Is 13 1/2 months too old for CIO..I'm at my wits end!
We only recently started letting my DD cry a bit at night and she just turned 2 so I don't think its too old ...It seems to somewhat be working okay..I had a hard time doing CIO any sooner with her because she was somewhat of a late teether and I knew that sometimes her cries were "pain" cries and I couldn't let her CIO ...
Still now she gets up generally 2-3x a night but after a few minutes she will push the buttin on her aquarium and get herself back to sleep

WE had to start letting DS cry at over a year old too. He was so used to being rocked and sleeping with me when he woke in the middle of the nite..that i was going to lose my mind.
he learned in a few days. it wasnt terrible. Going in there and him seeing me would just make it worse.

Can you put up some sort of room divider or curtain ?
Or would a crib tent help maybe ( I have never seen one 1st hand so not sure if that would block his sight from you at all )

agreed. Also, let him CIO. I don't think he is too old. And personally, stop with the bottle right before bed. He doesn't need them anymore. I also think he is old enough to start a bedtime routine. Bath, bottle, story, bed. I know the first couple of nights will be tough, but I'd do it now.

Honestly I doubt it will work with you in the same room. We had the same issue with Rylan. We were in a 1br and started CIO a little over a year old. We actually decided the best thing to do was sleep in the livingroom. It s*cked but i knew it was for the best.

ditto to this..
Also, have you tried putting up a partition (doesn't have to be a wall) in your room around his crib that you can put up before bed? I've seen ceiling tracks with curtains (similar to a hospital but nicer with an invisible track and heavy drapes)?

We have routine-dinner, play, bath, book, bottle. I am going to skip the bottle tonight and try to see if he will go to sleep without it.
I have nothing to lose (but sleep) at this point!

I don't think it will work with you in the room. My DS is 14 months and he doesn't sleep completely through the night. But when he wakes up, I just let him cry himself back to sleep. I don't go in until he has been up for 10 minutes. Most of the time, he just goes right back to sleep. But if he saw me, it would be over.

Re: Is 13 1/2 months too old for CIO..I'm at my wits end!
WE didn't do CIO with JJ until he was about 13 months! I didn't want to disrupt his routine with the new baby home! We just decided one night that we had enough & we put him in his crib tired but not asleep. He cried for about 30 minutes on & off. It was tough but I knew it had to be done. That night he slept pretty good, getting up I believe once where I just let him cry himself back to sleep.
The next night he cried a bit more when we put him to bed but not unbearable. Within 4 days, he was done crying & started to sleep 12 hours without waking! It was the BEST thing we did & I swear I will not wait that long with Nicholas!

Its not to late for CIO. Stay in the living room and once the baby is asleep u can go to bed. Honestly with my first, he slept in my room until he was 5y/o and I didn't have an issue with sttn. I think routine is the most important thing.

Re: Is 13 1/2 months too old for CIO..I'm at my wits end!
Tara when Michael was that age we were still living in 1 bedroom. We had and still have the same bed time routine as you. He would take his bottle while we read books to him and when he turned 15 months we switched to a sippy cup. You can't just take the bottle away so drastically, I mean you can but there is no need. Ater he is ready to go to bed, put him down awake in his crib, kiss him goodnight and leave. He will cry his lungs out during the first 6 minutes, which will feel like an eternity to you. Go back in, put him down and again walk out. Don't pick him up, I would just kiss Mikey and walk out. Again wait out appx 10-15 minutes now and then go back in. Another words, you want to stretch the periods of time that he is in the room alone. He will stop crying eventually and it will take some time but with consistency he will train himself to fall to sleep on his own, and you will notice that he will sleep through longer stretches and maybe even through the night.
If he wakes up in the middle of a night, you obviously can't do CIO. We would bring Mikey to bed with us and when he fell out again, he went right back to his crib. We did CIO at 6 months and he's been sleeping through the night since 9 weeks old so it might have been a little easier, but with consistency you will get him to fall asleep on his own.
I would also suggest starting your bed routine a little earlier bc obviously its going to take him a little longer to fall asleep at the beginning.
ETA: I just wanted to warn you that the process is absolutely heart-wrenching and Mike couldn't handle it. I had to do it while he was working OT lol...it was tough on me too but my bottle of wine got me through it!

Re: Is 13 1/2 months too old for CIO..I'm at my wits end!
I never attempted it until 12 months and it worked great.
I would think it would be hard if he sees you though, Maybe you can hang a curtain or somethign so he cant see you. Or put his crib in the living room for a few nights....

Re: Is 13 1/2 months too old for CIO..I'm at my wits end!
I don't think so. We started CIO with our son when he was about 16 months old. We have the same living situation as you and we bring our mattress into the living room to sleep there because CIO didn't work with us in the room. We're on night 3 of sleeping through the night. I'd like to get through at least one full week before we bring the mattress back into the room for a good night's rest. Best of luck!
