Re: Is anyone else waiting until 6 months for solids?
Posted by hbugalla
I had my eldest daughter almost 14 years ago. Since then the recommended age for starting solid foods has changed numerous times. The reasons for and againest starting early have switched back and forth as well...Start early to avoid food allergies...wait til a year to avoid food allergies....etc etc etc...
As long as your child is getting enough to eat what difference does a few months make???? Do whatever you feel comfortable with.
Well, I think it makes a huge difference and that's why the AAP recommends no solids until six months. I believe the research has been done and statistics compiled that show starting earlier attributes to food allergies (that are so prevelant these days), diabetes later in life and other things. A baby has an open gut until around 6 months of age, regardless of how big or how hungry they are.
With that said, I started DD at 5 months. I figured I should start her before daycare and before I went back to work and her ped. said to, so she did cereal for several weeks.

Re: Is anyone else waiting until 6 months for solids?
I started based on my ped's recomendations of when to start and I dont pressure Noah. IF we are out etc, I will totoally skip the cereal.
But HE also has Reflux and the cereal helps stay down and keeps the foprmula down better for him.
I did all the research and I felt it was ok to start now based on what I read. Im also going to make my own baby food and or use only organic when I start fruits/veggies.
Its ALL personal choice....
The research goes both ways....
You have to make the decision you feel comfortable with.

Re: Is anyone else waiting until 6 months for solids?
We are going to wait until 6 months or until Lucas seems to no longer be satisfied with the bottle...whichever comes first.
The ped kept mentioning starting solids until I asked her how necessary it was - se told me nutritionally no necessary for him right now - it's just fun...so I told her we would wait.

Re: Is anyone else waiting until 6 months for solids?
I don't agree when peds say a specific age. I think alot depends on how much formula they are drinking a day and if the baby is ready for a spoon. DS was 4.5 months old when I started. He was drinkning 40oz of formula a day and to me that was too much. My ped didn't want him to start until 6 months and I felt that was too late for my DS.
If you think he is ready then I would try.

I started cereal and foods earlier b/c the bottle wasn't satisfying DS. Every baby is different.

Donna - I wanted to make my own baby food. But the pediatrician told me to wait until Stage 2, since no machine we have at home can puree as finely as what you get pre-made. Tiny chunks can cause choking....so I am going to wait until Stage 2. Just some food for thought...

Re: Is anyone else waiting until 6 months for solids?
I waited to 6 months with DD #1 and will do the same with DD#2.
Solids are just for practice anyways, formula/BM should remain baby's main source of nutrition til 1 year old anyways.
No worries Bottles are so much easier!!

I do have some organic stage 1's and will use this, but I think that the oatmeal cereal is pretty lumpy and I have been able to puree in the past apples, bananas and peaches thinner then that oatmeal?
But Im waiting on that anyway....
Its good to hear what other peds think though..and now Im definitly considering waiting, so thank you for posting.

actually not 100% true about it being all they need till 1 yr.....
The reason you have to start solids at 6 months is b/c babies are born with a high dosage of Iron in their bodies that they slowly lose over the course of the first 6 months of life.
At 6 months time, they require Iron that cannot be found in BM or Formula and is why Iron fortified foods need to be introduced at that age.

Re: Is anyone else waiting until 6 months for solids?
Thanks everyone.
I go back to the ped on the 26th so I'll ask about it then.
I just got nervous that I wasn't doing something I was supposed to be.
He seems content now, so I don't want to force it.
But he's also up to 40 oz a day for a while now, so I wonder if he needs more.

Re: Is anyone else waiting until 6 months for solids?
My son was drinking a ton of formula at 4 months so we started with cereal and fruit at that time.
I think 4 months for US was a great time to start..it helped cut back on the insane amount of formula he was drinking and he loved the fruit and cereal. He has no allergies as well.
It really is relative to the baby! My niece will not be started on solids until 6 months..she is formula fed but gaining very slowly and not a big eater. Her doctor would rather see take in more milk rather than waste the time struggling with a few spoonfuls of cereal which makes complete sense.

Just repeating what my ped told me,and what we did-main source meaning, solids come 2nd to formula or bm.
My doc actually wanted me to continue with the Iron fortified baby cereal after she was done with Formula for the reason that she wasn't getting iron from the formula anymore (since u start milk at 1 year), but my darling DD wouldn't have it.

Re: Is anyone else waiting until 6 months for solids?
we're waiting until babies are ready! probably by six months.
by ped. didn't put any pressure on me and said i could ebf for even a year if i wanted. i won't wait that long though. it's important for babies to get some variety and to begin using the spoon, which helps develop different muscles and skills of the mouth and prepare it for speech.

I think 40 oz is the max he should have at this point (but I could be wrong)
If he is still hungry maybe talk to your ped about starting him with some cereal, if you are comfortable with that

Re: Is anyone else waiting until 6 months for solids?
I didn't start my daughter on solids until 6 months. She got all of her nutrition from breast milk. There really isn't a reason to start them earlier.

Re: Is anyone else waiting until 6 months for solids?
I really think it depends upon the child. My Dr wanted me to wait until 4 months but DS was a very big eater and I just knew he was hungry so I started him at 3.5 months and he did very well! My Dr was a little shocked with my decision to go ahead and try this on my own but the poor kid was drinking 3+ oz when he was still in the hospital after birth (like I said BIG eater!) I just knew he would be happier and sleep better with some real food. I think you have to feel it out and use your judgement. I will say with my next one though I am starting with vegetables not fruit- this kid has a sweet tooth to die for! I know they say that it shouldn't matter but I am not so sure how true that is- or he just got his mothers sweet tooth-LOL
Good Luck!

Re: Is anyone else waiting until 6 months for solids?
I started at 7 months for Joseph - waaaaay tooooo late.
What a mistake. He had gagging issues for months because he could not get used to having anything other than his bottle.
I switched pediatricians a few times so no one picked up on it.
