Is it ok for a 2 year old not to know their abc's
Or count to 5 or 10?
Please tell me it is. I have a couple Facebook braggers that have me worried, saying their almost 2 year old counts to 15 and knows the complete ABCs. Ds only knows "A, B" and can't really count as of yet. He thinks he can count though, if I ask him to he points and says "2, 2, 2"

Every child develops differently.
My 22 month old doesn't say a word...as long as your child is understanding it or making an effort, I think you are fine.

Re: Is it ok for a 2 year old not to know their abc's
DD is almost 3 and doesn't know either of these. Don't worry, they'll learn it.
DS only really learned these when he was 3, now that he is 4, he gets 1-10 but not 11-20. And he knows his abc's, but misses J and K.
Not all children are alike, ignore the braggers.

If you want to teach him, Leapfrog Letter Factory DVD is the best. My ds is 3 and knows them but forgets and confuses some.

My 2.5 year old can't count to 5, doesn't know his ABC's and is completely off tune with your typical songs i.e. 'Twinkle, Twinkle', Happy Birthday etc.
When we ask him to count to 5 he says '1,3,5!!!' or sing your ABC's he says 'ABC'S!, ABC's!, ABC's!'

It's not a problem - I was worried at that age because DS didn't know his colors (every time you asked he responded yellow).
The things he did know at that age were from repetition at daycare - he could recite certain things but, really had no clue what it meant.

Re: Is it ok for a 2 year old not to know their abc's
First thats completely normal! My now 5yo was at LEAST 2.5 before he knew his abc, maybe even older. Now he is the youngest kid in his class and one of the best readers! Dont worry.
If you want something to help, i HIGHLY recommend, the preschool prep dvd series.
My almost 2yo (april bday) can identify all the abcs (but can't recite the song) as well as some other stuff from these DVDs! I bought them from amazon, they had a pkg that was meet the letters, meet the numbers, meet the shapes and meet the colors. Within 2 weeks I was shocked by his development! and I only did this so I would be able to pee, shower, cook dinner in peace! I had no expectations of him learning so much from them!!!
Good Luck, and block your facebook braggers, lol, they really just do this to drive us nuts!!
ETA: we have a massive amount of "learning" dvds, and IMO these might be the best! (even though I thought they were so boring and would never hold his interest when we first got them!)

Re: Is it ok for a 2 year old not to know their abc's
I think it's normal for them not to know that at 2. My DS is 21 months and he can count to 2. He knows a couple of letters and tries to sing along to the ABC song, but mostly just says la, la, la.
I do have that Letter Factory DVD and he loves it! He's learned to recognize a few letters from it.

Love the Letter Factory DVD. Back when my DD was itty bitty she learned her ABCs and all the letter sounds in like 2 days and never forgot them. Great DVD, I highly recommend it.
ETA - and it's totally fine at 2 to not know them all

Re: Is it ok for a 2 year old not to know their abc's
My 2.5 year old doesn't talk yet, so he doesn't sing the ABCs or "count" yet, but he can point out the numbers 1-10 if we ask him and he can point out almost all the letters if we ask him. I don't think it is expected of a 2yo at all, as these are a few of the basic things they start teaching in preschool/preK, which isn't until ages 3 or 4.

Re: Is it ok for a 2 year old not to know their abc's
My daughter had her 2 yr old well care today. They did ask both questions. But neither are something they should know by 2. My daughter can count to 12 but skips 2 - not sure why because for the longest time she could only count to 2 or 3!! SHe can't sing the ABC song correctly. She can hum the tune and says some letters in there. She has no interest in learning letters! Both my sons could recognize all/most letters by 2 (one could say it but one didn't talk much at 2 but could point them out). She only knows M and O and K! All kids are different.

My 2.5 yr old will repeat them but doesn't know them nor count to 5. I'm not worried.

Is it ok for a 2 year old not to know their abc's
My son is 3 and can count tand recognize numbers to 30 but only knows the letters A,B, and C on his own. The rest he mimics me. Abc is actually a 4 yr old concept. Also just bc a kids say their abc means nothing. Being able to recognize each letter is the true understanding. Kids can memorize and repeat everything. Is the knowing, recognizing, and recalling (not in order) that is the true skill.

DS didn't know his ABCs till he turned 3! DD knew them before 2 but ONLY because we have that fridge phonics thing and she listened to DS recite the ABCs every. single. day.

My son was so old...he did not talk till 3. At 6, he is so smart...top of class. Definitely outside of box thinker. No interest n memorizing things and singing a song that means nothing.

Re: Is it ok for a 2 year old not to know their abc's
Do you play games a lot that involve counting or singing the abc's or teach it? Honestly when they learn is part smarts BUT IMO mainly how much you do it with them. If you sing it everyday vs once a week... I know very smart kids who just weren't interested or didn't have anyone playing or teaching it to them. Then I know parents who drilled it and so their kids knew it. Some kids pick it up quicker bc they are interested some are more interested in painting or running or whatever. So I think there is a huge range. But a 2 yr old who doesn't know it isn't a concern to me.

Not a concern Every kid learns at a different rate At that age it is mostly what they are exposed to on a regular basis and they memorize Don't worry about it all
