I don't think rude is the right word exactly...
but I don't think it's right either and would not ask someone to do that. I hate removing my shoes at people's houses.

I think it is rude NOT to remove your shoes when you come to someone's house in the middle of winter and ESPECIALLY if in this house lives a child!

This is the first time I'm looking at this thread. And my first instinct of a response was: Wow, it's as if we never had this conversation beforeChat Icon Chat Icon

To answer the original quesiton, I don't think it's rude. When visiting someone, I always ask "should I take off my shoes?" Especially if they have children. I'm too nervous to step on a tiny finger or toe. Sorry, but looking cute can go on the back burner when it's either that or hurting a child.Chat Icon

BTW: The world's majority remove their shoes when entering another person's home. It's been a cultural norm for centuries. American and "the West" are actually in the minority when we keep our shoes on.

so true, I grew up in Poland and I have never heard a debate about it... it was something that you did when entering someone's home...

DH grew up in Poland, too and his whole family does this. He doesn't keep any of his shoes in our closet, they all go in the hall closet or in the bench by the front door (with cubbies in it). He kicks them off as soon as he gets in.

We get in this debate a lot because I never did this in my parents' house.

Reasons why I like to keep my shoes on:

-part of the outfit
-feet are cold
-afraid of stepping on toys and hurting my foot (BTDT)
-planning on going out again soon and shoes are not easy to get on and off (like some boots)
-it is too warm in the house and I am afraid my feet will swell and I won't be able to get the shoes back on.

Okay, so I think you can see that I don't like to be asked to take off my shoes.

I know it's your house and I guess it's your right to do what you want...but since you're asking on a public forum, then, yes I think it's rude.

It may make your guests feel uncomfortable and who wants to do that?!

In our house when you walk through the front door your in the living rm and we have carpet. We all take off our shoes when walking in, my ds's friends do and so does my family. However I feel uncomfortable to ask other people. How I wish I could. About 2mos ago I had Stanley steamers come and clean my rug, it came out beautiful. Then on my step dtrs b-day party it was rained in the am so it was muddy outside and I had about 20 people in my house and when they left my rug is now horrible again. Dh told me I should of asked people to remove their shoes but I felt that would of been rude of me. So if your able to ask then I suggest that you do Chat Icon

I feel terrible I never take my shoes off at your house.....I do wipe my feet before I come in though

I think its rude, sorryChat Icon and I have to tell you- I think the sole of a shoe is less germ infested than a foot! or a dirty sock/stocking from sweat.

and whats the big deal to clean after they leave? you do anyway no?

Not rude at all. I've even gotten to the point where I ask are shoes allowed. Especially when there is a baby.

I hate being asked to remove my shoes. I feel I am told I am not clean enough or I may damage something. In essence, I feel I am treated as a kid.

I understand why but people need to have an adult space in their house so the guests feel comfortable.

Add to the list...

Getting a run in your pantyhose (BTDT) on hardwood floor. Then you don't have an extra pair with you and it looks horrible.

I don't think it's rude..Your house..your rules. DH and I let people know before they come they will have to take their shoes off and everyone is fine with it. We've never had anyone complain or say it was rude. To each their own.

I'm so confused why people wear ugly socks all the time Chat Icon put on clean non-holy socks people!Chat Icon

I don't get why people don't just clean their floors after a guest leaves???Chat Icon

IMO I don't think we can have our kids living in a bubble there are germs inthe world and so they have to build up an immunity to the world they will live in.

Once I get my hardwood floors put in, I will have no issues with people keeping their shoes on. I have no problem mopping/sweeping after they leave.

But right now I have LIGHT cream colored carpets everywhere and it kills me when people don't take off their shoes. I take mine off when I go into someone's house, I thought it was common sense that it's polite to do that.

For me it's not about germs, it's about shampooing rugs that get dog poop, dirt, etc. on them. Why put myself through that when people can simply remove their shoes?

I think we've beaten this topic to death so maybe it's time to lay it to rest Chat Icon

Oh yea--- I have seen many posts where a woman states that she is having a c-section and someone makes her feel like the Dr is pushing it on her, and turns it into this c-section bashing post. Chat Icon Then it goes from there...
