Is it true there is no longer a nursery at Winthrop?
I heard that there is no longer a nursery at Winthrop and once you delivery the baby must stay with you in your room.
Is this true?

Most hospitals don't have a nurser anymore. They all encourage rooming in. I heard Winthrop is one of them.

I delivered in feb last year and there was a nursery. I was throwing up and they took the baby to the nursery until I asked for him back when I had visitors

ugh, I had a really tough delivery with DS (3 years ago) and really appreciated being able to send him to the nursery so I could rest. I will definitely miss that this time around.

I don't think they MUST stay in the room with you, but its highly encouraged to the point where it may seem that they are forcing you. My SIL delivered at Winthrop not too long ago -- she wanted the baby to be taken out of the room so she could rest and she didn't want to breastfeed or attempt to, which is of course her choice -- she said the nurses made her feel really bad about her decisions

There is a nursery; but the hospital pushes rooming in big time. From the time you deliver they want to keep babies and moms together so they really don't want you sending your baby to the nursery. Out of all the hospitals Winthrop is the most stern when it comes to enforcing that policy but they ultimately can't tell you no. Yes they may make you feel bad , but in due time they won't have a well baby nursery.

Same for my friend. She actually wanted to bf but she had a traumatic delivery and it wasn't working. They refused to give her formula without a doctors prescription. Her mom left and bought formula and brought it back. Crazy.

Re: Is it true there is no longer a nursery at Winthrop?
I delivered there in 2010 and 2013. Both times they encouraged rooming in, but I sent the babies into the nursery from about 10pm-3am every night, and they'd just bring them to me when they were ready to nurse. I had csedtions both times, so I asked the nurses to take them and they gladly did. When I had my twins in 2013, they were also great about taking them into the nursery while I showered if I was alone. All you have to do is ask. They just don't want the babies in there all day and night.

Re: Is it true there is no longer a nursery at Winthrop?
I delivered there in Feb 2013 and had my daughter brought to the nursery at night. They didn't even question me on it. Actually, the nurse knew that I was so tired from my delivery she told me she wouldn't bother me the whole night and to get rest.

One thing to remember is remind them that YOU are the patient and it is your choice. Your doctor will stand up for you so get them involved in need be!!

I gave birth at Winthrop in February and there is a nursery. All the nurses were so nice from labor and delivery to maternity.

Re: Is it true there is no longer a nursery at Winthrop?
I had my second there in July - there is indeed a nursery. They strongly encourage you to keep the baby in the room, but will absolutely take baby when you ask. I chose to send my son to the nursery overnight every night I was there. They brought him back to me every morning at 7 and he stayed in the room until visiting hours ended at 10:00 pm.

I hope they will take my DD to the nursery. I delivered there almost 3 years ago. I was in pain w/ after having DS and really appreciated the rest by having them take the baby to the nursery.

This was my experience in 2013 - the baby wasn't eating and they were not helping me bf and I wanted formula but had to wait for ped instruction. If you are on the fence about bf don't let them know just say you will ff and try and nurse on your own.

Is it true there is no longer a nursery at Winthrop?
A close family member is a nurse there and they're pressured to encourage moms to keep the baby in the room but the nurse in my family says she tries to let moms know it's within their rights to ask to have the baby brought to the nursery. She says it's so important to get some rest so don't feel bad about pushing back.

A close friend of mine used to work there as well. She was given the same instruction. She no longer works there for many reasons.
I agree with PP suggestion about FF. If you plan to just try breastfeeding, just list yourself as FF from the get go. Ask your PED which formula to list in advance bc they will ask for a preference.
I didnt have a great experience at the hospital either, but they did wind up taking my DS to the nursery from midnight to 6am. I could tell they were very annoyed about it, but I did what i felt was right in the situation i was in. Im sure you will be fine, but it just stinks that they make you feel like a horrible person for not BF or sending your child to the nursery. Too much judgement.... oh and they definitely get kickbacks for encouraging BF.

i delivered there - c section in feb 2013 (and will again this summer). They never questioned my decision to FF and happily took Ds to nursery every night for me.

This "rumor" about winthrop has been going on for years. There is no way a maternity ward would not have a nursery.
As much as they encourage you to keep the baby, both times I was there they gave me no issue taking the baby around 10pm and bringing them back in the morning.

I feel like a lot has changed in the past 2 years so people who are commenting from 2013, might not feel the effects of the pressure they are putting on moms now. I gave birth 2 years ago also and im nervous for how much has changed now

There was a nursery in August. There seemed to be two - the main one where I brought my baby for her hearing and pediatrician checks and another one across from my room.

I agree with this. My SIL (who I wrote about earlier in this thread) had her first in 2011 and experienced very little pressure/feelings of guilt, however her most recent 2014 experience was completely different. A few years can make a big difference in regards to "hospital policy" and what the nurses are pushing.

Same here and I delivered in October of 2012. However if they didn't they def would have heard my mouth. You are the mother and you make the decisions. Don't let them make them for you.
