Issue with DD teacher... WWYD?
Ok here's the situation... tell me if I'm making this bigger than it needs to be.
Yesterday my 11 yr old DD got a bloody nose at school (not uncommon for her in winter weather) and she went to the nurse to take care of it. When she was done she went to her next class. Her teacher saw that she had a rag with her and that her nose had been bloody and asked her "what happened? Did you walk into a wall or did your boyfriend hit you?"
WHAT??? My jaw hit the floor. I couldn't believe what I was hearing.
Luckily my DD was more focused on the fact he stated she had a boyfriend and it really didn't occur to her that what he said was inappropriate. I am really put off by this and I'm trying to figure out what to do? Say something? Chalk it up to not thinking? Am I overreacting?
I guess as a domestic abuse survivor I'm super sensitive to this topic but I'm really upset about this.
Thoughts?

Issue with DD teacher... WWYD?
I think that's inappropriate to say, especially to an 11 year old.

1. Making a joke to an 11 year old is highly inappropriate 2. Definitely speak to the principal

That is horrible. I would email the teacher reporting what your DD said so you have a record of it. If anything else like that happens again I would take it to the principal.

The teacher is male... does that change anyone's perspective on not going to the principal? Genuinely curious if that changes things, not trying to be snarky.

No you should no matter what.
And tbh, especially because it's a male

This comment was insensitive, inappropriate, and moronic. I would absolutely alert the Principal.

Wow, I'd give him the benefit of the doubt and think he was making an attempt at humor and was not ill intentioned. That said, I think his comment was incredibly insensitive and totally inappropriate to say to a young person. I would email the teacher and state what your DD reported and that you feel an apology is needed.

I think you should just speak with the teacher. It was a horrible comment to make but I think you should give him the benefit of the going directly to him first to allow him to apologize. I agree with the pp that it probably wasn't ill intended but should still be addressed. I think if he doesn't take it seriously when you speak to him - then I would go higher.

Uh yes.....I'd like to see if it was your kid he made the remark to. Do teachers not go through any training????? I work with Law School students, so they are ADULTS 22 and over, and we have training's of appropriate ways to speak to them and act with them....this would not be allowed.

And I sincerely doubt this was the first time in his teaching career he made an inappropriate, punishable remark, unless he is a brand new teacher and this is his first semester teaching. You can bet he has done this his whole career, you don't become an asshole overnight.

Go to the principal. Telling him what he said is not going to do anything. Hopefully it was an isolated incident but it should be reported in case it happens more.

Issue with DD teacher... WWYD?
Did he say it in a joking manner? Or did he pull her aside and ask in a serious tone? Because if it's the latter, while it is highly unlikely an 11 year old would have a boyfriend perhaps he WAS asking out of concern?
If he was clearly joking I would report him.
