Re: Jacob is being evaluated with Early Intervention..
I think it's better that you are having him checked out early. He is probably fine, but even if he is a little delayed, early help could catch him up. You are doing the right thing!

Re: Jacob is being evaluated with Early Intervention..

I have had concerns since he was one year old. And as a mother, I am just going to go with my gut and not "wait" as other people have told me to do. Even when I asked my ped about it he said "well Jacob has always been a little behind, just wait and see."
But I dont want to wait. So what, so they come and evaluate him and they say he's fine... great! Doesnt cost me a dime. And if he is slightly delayed, I can get him assistance and hopefully bring him up to speed quicker than if I just waited.
Bravo to you, what a good mommy you are. I know so many people who use that "wait and see" approach, when it is well known that prognosis is much better the earlier these therapies start.
You may want to push them a little on that "month" waiting time because they only have 30 or 45 days to issue a report from the day you first made the call. Keep on them and be your son's advocate (because no-one else will). Also, if you get approval, make sure they start his therapies immediately.

Re: Jacob is being evaluated with Early Intervention..
Kudos to you for not waiting like most people tell parents with concerns to do!! My son was evaluated at the recomendation of a friend when he was two and not talking much, and it turned out he was behind in more than just speech. He had gross/fine motor delays as well, things his doctor never really picked up on and needed speech, OT and PT. He is now 8 and has received those services at school as well, but starting next year he will drop all but OT since he has improved so much.
Good luck!

Re: Jacob is being evaluated with Early Intervention..
First off, I think it's great that you are doing this now. My sister just had my niece evaluated (she is 2 1/2). She is receiving services 4 days a week. She is not really speaking at all (I am very worried about her). Kudos to you for being proactive. I think many parents put it off because they are afraid that something is wrong, but it is sooo beneficial.

Re: Jacob is being evaluated with Early Intervention..
Kudos to you for getting it done early. My nephew is 2 and my sister had him evaluated. They came to the home (he was about 16-17 months) and they told her give it some more time. Well, He is talking up a storm now. He was pointing and all, but, all babble. They came in and he was great with the E.I. people. My sister just worked with him and he's also in school PT mornings 2 days a week, so, being around other kids may have helped him too. Again, good for you for not "waiting". I told my sister the same.

Re: Jacob is being evaluated with Early Intervention..
Jacob is lucky to have such a great mom who is going to get all the help that he needs. As a teacher, I wish more parents would seek out early intervention prior to getting the kids into the school system, because it gives them a head start and they end up doing so much better.
I wish you guys the best of luck iwth it all and keep us posted!

Re: Jacob is being evaluated with Early Intervention..
Good for you! The sooner the better. Cole has 3 days a week of speech and goes to a "toddler talk" program 2 days. He went from having almost no receptive language (comprehension) to a 50 word vocabulary in 4 months. Early intervention is absolutely wonderful.
