Jewish moms: name questions/advice
At almost 34 weeks pregnant, DH and I still don't have any names picked out. We don't even have a narrowed down list of names. DH rejects my suggestions and I reject his. We have very different taste in names.
So far, we've pretty much only looked at names beginning with "E" or "T" b/c I'd like to honor two of my relatives who passed away. I know technically we can just use the Hebrew names, but everyone in my family has also used the first initial of the family member who passed away for the American names.
I'm very torn on what to do. I happen to love a few "E" names, especially for a girl, but DH doesn't like them. I'm tempted to just start looking at all names in an effort to find ones that we can agree upon. Part of me feels bad if we don't honor those relatives although I have cousins who have been named after them. At the same time, I'd like to find names that we'd both be happy with. My mom doesn't think anyone in my family will be offended if we don't use "E" and "T", but I think what bothers me most is not following the family tradition.
Does anyone have any advice? What are you doing about names? Are you using just the Hebrew names or are you also using the first initial for the American names?

Re: Jewish moms: name questions/advice
I'm probably going to do both, use the 1st inital and the hebrew name to name it after my grandfather. Just because growing up I always liked that I was named with an S after my grandma Sally. I never ever use my hebrew name besides hebrew school so it didn't mean as much to me. Not sure if that makes any sense. But I think as long as the hebrew name is after the relatives the family will be happy the first initial thing is totally up to you!! If its so hard agreeing on a name just go with any initials!

Just Hebrew names. We haven't picked a name yet either way, but the english name will have nothing really to do with the hebrew name and/or who we're honoring.

Re: Jewish moms: name questions/advice
For our girls name-- we don't use any initials.
For the boy name, the middle initial is after DH's father-- who actually just passed away a year ago this week, who also shares the same letter as my maternal grandmother.
I felt badly about not doing anything with the American names, especially with the sensitivity of my FIL's recent passing, but I was not going to name my child a name I didn't like.
For the Hebrew names, if it's a girl, the Hebrew name will have the same initials as my FIL. If it's a boy, he'll get the same exact Hebrew name as his.
I was dealing with an H-- and we really couldn't find anything we liked for either girls names, or a first boy name.

My son's American name is not for anyone and it is not related to his Hebrew names. He has Hebrew names for 2 people.

we're doing both, but you did mention that the people were already honored after these people??? If so, then I think you're OK...yah it would be great to be able to agree on names, but believe me, DH and I have complete opposite tastes on names and it was a nightmare finally narrowing them down.....

My first cousin is named after "E" and a second cousin (middle name) is named after "T." I definitely think there's less of an issue b/c of this, but it would feel kind of strange to not follow the tradition.

Re: Jewish moms: name questions/advice
We are using the female version of my great uncles first name (english) and using the same name for her middle name as my great aunt. There is nobody on that side of the family to honor their names. Her hebrew name we're still deciding on, but will probably be for DH's grandmother and my grandfather.

Jeremy is also named after an "H". Obviously as you can see, we did not use the same initial (for the same reason as listed above )
Dylan is named after a "D". It s a much easier letter to name after though

Re: Jewish moms: name questions/advice
DD's name is Abigail Eden
She was named for my father whose English name started with a "V", DH's grandfather whose name started with an "I".
Her Hebrew names are feminine versions of their Hebrew names and we gave her a second middle name in Hebrew for my mother.
To me, the Hebrew names were the only ones that mattered as that is where the honors truly are. English never really came into play for us.

Re: Jewish moms: name questions/advice
Use my name, Elyssa JK
We used "A" and "I" to honor my grandfather and my husband's grandfather with DD. Then we chose her Hebrew name after my grandfather (DH isn't Jewish). HOWEVER, certain people in our family couldn't help themselves and complained to no end about the ORDER that we chose to use the names. Apparently one of our grandfather's should be more important than the other
This time around we have decided to just pick names we like, and we will pick a Hebrew name for someone in my family after the baby is born. We frankly didn't want to listen to the BS all over again.
As long as you pic a Hebrew name after your family I wouldn't worry about it. I think it' s more important that you and your DH both like your kid's name.
