Kid Birthday parties
My children just started school/daycare full time and we received out first bday party invitation. Im new to this-so what do parents typically give for parties when you don't know the child? Gift card seems like no fun. I hesitate to ask the parents because I don’t want to get locked into anything then seem like an a-hole if I get something different. Suggestions? The boy is turning 4.

I either do a gift card or buy an age appropriate toy and include the gift receipt. It's hard to buy for a classmate, you have no idea what they have or like.

For the little ones, I always buy a gift. They get very excited when they see presents. I either pick some thing that my kids play with or I will take my invitee kid to the store and let them pick out some thing.

This.
My kids had a lot of toys when they were that age but they always got something interesting that they didn’t have for their birthday party.
I didn’t start giftcards until they were older and only play video games lol.

Kid Birthday parties
Little kids like gifts. They're too young to understand the appeal of a gift card. When my daughter was that age, I would take her with me to Target and have her pick out a gift for her friend. I would always include the gift receipt.

Though as a parent I rather a gift card but at that age I would get an age appropriate and include a gift receipt in case they have it already or it doesn’t appeal to them!!
I usually spend are $25
My kids have been having parties for a long time and the price range of gifts vary. So really you can spend what you want.

I find Barnes and Noble is a good place to get a gift for that age group. They have age appropriate educational toys and you can pair it up with a cute book. I typically spend around $40.

Usually spend around $25. If 8 and younger i get a gift and attach gift receipt. Older, i do gift cards.

If there are like 20 kids in the class and everyone invites the whole class - you will probably be going to parties regularly. (Not sure if it's different now because of the pandemic.)
I definitely vote gift card or present with a gift receipt. By the time a 4 year old gets to the 6th gift - they don't care anymore. It's a little insane (or a lot insane).
I go with $25.

Agree. Little kids love gifts...stick to the age group and gender/what's popular and give a gift receipt.
ETA: $25-30 seems a good range to stay in

Gift card is very much appreciated. Sometimes we get so many toys/presents that it is overkill. The occasional gift card is wonderful. It is usually for Amazon, target, or B&N. Buying clothes or books is also a great gift.

Toys for that age. You can ask the parent what they would like when you RSVP.
I always make sure to buy a gift at a brick and mortar store (ie no Amazon) with a gift receipt so the item can easily be returned without the gift giver knowing. My go to on LI was target or Barnes and noble.
