Kids Riding Bikes without Helmets
Why don't kids wear helmets when they're riding bikes? Other than really little kids who are with a parent, I feel like I NEVER see a helmet on a kid. Do parent actually allow this?
I've been noticing it even more recently because my co-worker's son was hit by a car when he was on his bike, and his helmet likely prevented him from having much more severe injuries (he still is seeing a neurologist for ongoing concussion problems, but it could have been so much worse). Then I see these young kids all over town riding their bikes, sometimes recklessly, and not a helmet in sight. If either of my sons did this (they're currently to young, but when they get older), they would lose their bike privileges immediately. It drives me nuts that these kids are being so reckless.

Re: Kids Riding Bikes without Helmets
Because just like holding an umbrella in the rain, or wearing an actual coat when it's 20 below outside, it's NOT COOL

Re: Kids Riding Bikes without Helmets
I see it too. It's like it's not "Cool" to wear your helmet and get made fun of. I feel like a lot of parents think how they never wore a helmet and lived to tell the tale. Which I feel is the wrong way to think. Our parents just didn't know any better. Now we all do. Same with smoking - everyone smoked growing up. and IN THE HOUSE! Now, even most smokers take it outside. We know better now.
When I was growing up, it wasn't "Cool' to wear your seat belt in the car. I never wore it up until I was 17 years old. One of my BFF was in a terrible car crash that changed her entire life. Scar going down from forehead to chin, learning how to write, read, etc. I'll never forget going to see her in the hospital and her mom telling the group of girls I was with the dangers of not wearing our seat belt. She was unrecognizable. Scared the living shit outta me. You better believe when we left that hospital we all had our seat belts on.
Exactly one year later, I was in a head on collision going 50+ on a highway in brooklyn. Drunk driver came right over to our lane. I walked onto the ambulance with minor injuries and some water on my knees all because of wearing my seat belt. The first person I called when I got home was my friend who has that bad accident a year before. Thanking her and her mother for the lesson. If it wasn't for them, I would have died that night.

Re: Kids Riding Bikes without Helmets
I’m going to admit that I don’t wear a helmet when riding my bike. I really should know better as I broke my shoulder in a bike accident.
The helmets can be very uncomfortable.
I don’t know; they don’t really wear them here either.

Re: Kids Riding Bikes without Helmets
My DH looked it up recently because he has been biking a lot with DD this summer now that she is getting better at riding. She wears a helmet of course, but he never had one for himself.
I think it's a law here in NY that kids under a certain age be wearing helmets. (not sure if he said 18 or what) but adults are not required to.
Still not a bad idea to be wearing one at all ages though.

Wear your helmet!! Find one that’s more comfortable for you. I always wear my helmet when riding my bike. It’ll be even more uncomfortable god forbid you get hurt! (I was pointing and wagging my finger while saying this lol)

Love the pointing and wagging finger reference!
You are absolutely correct. I need to find it. Luckily, I have not ridden my bike this summer. I need to fill up the tires with air and I’m too lazy to go and get the air pump.
I just need to adjust my helmet a bit better; I don’t think I need a new one.
But this thread made me realize that I really should wear a helmet. It’s just no one really wears helmets here.

I looked it up because I thought all bike riders had to wear helmets, but apparently it's only under 14 years old in NY. Parents can get a ticket up to $50. But how do you actually enforce that? Are police supposed to ask to see kids' birth certificates?
Our town has been having a problem with kids on bikes playing chicken with on coming traffic, and none of these kids are wearing helmets. I totally believe in kids having some freedom, but I still think it's the parents responsibility to know where the kids are and what they're doing. It's risky enough riding on Long Island, why add to the risk by not protecting your head.
When I was a kid, I rode my bike all over town. If my parents had gotten a report that I didn't have a helmet on, I would have been in huge trouble.

I see this all the time, too. The penalty should be worse than a $50 ticket. I don’t understand what is wrong with these parents.

Nope. I'm guessing this is a problem in a lot of towns.

Re: Kids Riding Bikes without Helmets
If people are really curious why (and at the risk of horrifying the mom police ) my own personal reason is that I forget. We didn't wear helmets as kids when I was growing up so it's not second nature to me in the same way putting a seatbelt on would be. Luckily, my oldest is 5 and she remembers every single time so covers me when I forget. If she didn't I know from time to time she would not have one.

We hang DD's helmet from her handlebars when we put the bike away in the garage so this way we always see it and remember.

Wow - that's so obvious and such an easy solution. That's why I really like LIF. Definitely going to do that! Thanks!

Makes me insane! I see it ALL the time on my neighborhood. Like you'd rather be dead or have a brain injury than look "uncool"?! My son (he's 10) gave me crap about it for a bit, but it's a non negotiable for me.

I'ts the same with them not wanting to sit in boosters in the car. Too fuking bad, I'm in charge and safety comes before all else.
(Luckily, DD doesn't say word one about her booster but if she did, I wouldn't give a damn)

Re: Kids Riding Bikes without Helmets
When I was 14, I was hit by a drunk driver in a parking lot. I was pretty banged up but thankfully ok and didn't needed stiches and had no broken bones. I will never forget the judge brought me into his chambers to talk to me. He asked were you wearing a helmet? I said no. He then yelled at me that I was lucky and that for now on promise him I will wear one. I did from that day on. He told me he was also hit by a drunk driver except it was really bad, his helmet saved his life. It scared me but so happy to have him to say it, since I always gave my mom a hard time abut wearing it. I now make my kids wear theirs and try to teach them its the law and so far they have been good about it.

Re: Kids Riding Bikes without Helmets
Because parents don't care?!! This drives me crazy alsmost as much as parents who don't follow car seat safety. As far as I know its actually a law I NYS that children I think 14 and under must wear a helmet.
Granted as an adult I probably wouldn't wear a helmet but my kids sure will be. Its simple you either wear the helmet or don't ride your bike, scooter, rollerskates etc.

Genuine question, why as an adult wouldn't you wear a helmet?
It's not like a car seat where once you reach a certain size the seat-belt is now safe. Adults' heads are just just as susceptible to traumatic brain injury. If you don't wear a helmet, then what kind of example is being set for the kids. As they get older, they'll wonder why they need to where one if mom doesn't.

I was going to ask as well.. food for thought - you are just as susceptible to an accident and god forbid leaving your kids without a mom. I don't ride bike but I would wear one.
This is funny you mentioned this because I was thinking I messed up the other day. I realized my son was riding his scooter up and down the driveway without a helmet. I wasn't thinking, I guess because I never wore a helmet growing up. My son doesn't know how to ride by himself but wears when we practice. So it was dumb that he had one and I didnt tell him.
