I don’t understand what is wrong with these parents.
REALLY unfair. I don’t know how old your kids are, but mine are 13 (next month), 11, and 7. Obviously, the 7 year old only rides with an adult present and does wear a helmet. My older girls ride with friends..no adults present. I tell them to wear their helmets, I tell them WHY, I see them leaving the house with helmets. After that, I don’t know what happens. Am I supposed to tail them for hours in my car?

The kids I see don’t have helmets with them. They don’t have their helmet hanging from the handle bars. They very obviously had no helmet with them at any point unless they threw it away.
I also frequently see kids riding with adults and none have helmets. There is something wrong with any parent who rides beside their helmet-less child. I don’t care if that’s unfair to say.
What I see and what you do with your kids are apples to oranges.

Obviously, you can't be with your kid every second, and I've totally seen kids riding with their helmet hanging off their bike handles, so their parents probably thought they were wearing it. They are typically on the younger side (11 or so) and with other kids who are wearing their helmets.
But there are A LOT of kids I see riding around without a sign of a helmet in the entire group (usually a little older, maybe 13-15ish). I'd think if these kids' parents were enforcing wearing a helmet that at least some would wear them for fear that their parent would find out and punish them, e.g., a neighbor or friend could see them and report back to the parent. The fact that none of them are wearing helmets makes it seem like maybe the parents don't care.
I could be wrong and I'm making plenty of assumptions, but I just find it hard to believe it would be such a universal thing if most or all parents were trying to enforce it.

Kids Riding Bikes without Helmets
I'm an adult and I ALWAYS wear a helmet. I model this behavior for my son so he knows he always needs to wear a helmet. At this point, I can still control his actions as he is 4 so it is a non issue, but I hope it is so ingrained in him when he is older that he will always wear it. I see SO many distracted drivers - I can't imagine not wearing a helmet!!! Safety first.

Because parents don't care?!! This drives me crazy alsmost as much as parents who don't follow car seat safety. As far as I know its actually a law I NYS that children I think 14 and under must wear a helmet.
Granted as an adult I probably wouldn't wear a helmet but my kids sure will be. Its simple you either wear the helmet or don't ride your bike, scooter, rollerskates etc.
Genuine question, why as an adult wouldn't you wear a helmet?
It's not like a car seat where once you reach a certain size the seat-belt is now safe. Adults' heads are just just as susceptible to traumatic brain injury. If you don't wear a helmet, then what kind of example is being set for the kids. As they get older, they'll wonder why they need to where one if mom doesn't.
I was going to ask as well.. food for thought - you are just as susceptible to an accident and god forbid leaving your kids without a mom. I don't ride bike but I would wear one.
This is funny you mentioned this because I was thinking I messed up the other day. I realized my son was riding his scooter up and down the driveway without a helmet. I wasn't thinking, I guess because I never wore a helmet growing up. My son doesn't know how to ride by himself but wears when we practice. So it was dumb that he had one and I didnt tell him.
I should have wrote in my statement that I should wear a helmet, I know I should but I can see myself not doing it which is yes stupid of me but right now also don't even own a bike I was supposed to buy one last year and still haven't (my parents gave me money for a bike for my bday)
and I know its no always obvious but it does drive me crazy when kids don't wear helmets when riding scooter its just as dangerous as a bike. Not knocking you I forget sometimes also and my DH is the worse at enforcing it esp for the scooter. I even kind of want them wearing it when riding the power wheel type cars and motorcycles. Though I do forget to enforce this sometimes. I have a friend whose kid was on his scooter and he hit int a huge curb flipped over the scooter and hit his head. She always makes him wear a helmet of course he wasn't wearing it this one time.

I looked it up because I thought all bike riders had to wear helmets, but apparently it's only under 14 years old in NY. Parents can get a ticket up to $50. But how do you actually enforce that? Are police supposed to ask to see kids' birth certificates?
I know of police officers, who when they see a particularly reckless kid riding a bike without a helmet, drive the kid home and talk to the parents - even give them a ticket if necessary. Many times, the parent doesn't even know the kid is riding without a helmet.

Re: Kids Riding Bikes without Helmets
I will share this story, i dont know if i have shared it here. but probably back in 2005 I think when I lived in Bklyn, Dh and i were going to a store in Bayridge to get him suits. we park and walk a few blocks.
as we are walking I see two little girls run by, visibly crying / upset. I just went hmmm..wonder who they got into an argument with..kids u know.
So we are gone maybe 30 min and come walking back to our car to find an ambulance, police cars, and a lttle boy lying in the street being worked on by the EMS. He's a distance away but I can see the gauze wrapped around his head and lots of blood already through the gauze. I see a woman in a car a few feet up ahead, with her head in her hands crying. So im like OMG.. he got hit by the car.
those two girls crying were his sisters. Kid was riding and darted out from between cars and this poor woman just driving down the street couldnt stop in time. She wasnt speeding or doing anything wrong.
The kid died b/c he had no helmet. I remember seeing the story in the daily news the next day and I will NEVER forget this kid, and the image burned into my mind that day. I think he was 10 or 11. He would likely have been saved had he had a helmet b/c it was all head trauma.
My 8 yr old wears a helmet and I need to get one for myself when I go out on my rollerblades with him.
I know they are dorky looking. I dont see many kids over the age of 10 or 11 here wearing them, and all they do is ride in the streets like maniacs.

Agree. I was just driving home today and saw 2 young kids riding with their parents. The kids were wearing helmets but not the parents. How can a parent expect their kid to do the right thing when the parent can't be bothered?

No - but if you see them riding without a helmet - take away the bikes. I'm sure they have phones with them when they are out riding alone so you can check where they are and do a spot check here and there and make sure they have their helmets on. Seems like a no brainer to me. Riding a bike without a helmet is incredibly dangerous.

This is an ongoing fight I have with my husband! I make the kids wear a helment. My older one (almost 10) just started riding around the neighborhood with his friends. If he doesn't wear his helmet, he isn't allowed to go - simple as that! However, his father doesn't always enforce this rule! It annoys the crap out of me. My husband used to ride miles and miles to work and never wear a helmet. Drove me nuts. On the other hand, I was riding around the neighborhood with my little one once and I ran into friends in the neighborhood who ragged on me for having a helmet on. I was like wth!
ETS this was not who I was supposed to quote! LOL And for the record, my son does not have a phone when riding. I give him a watch! And I am just glad that kids are out riding around the neighborhood! LOL

This thread is seriously amazing me. Adults made fun of you for wearing a helmet? In front of children? This is almost as idiotic as when I see people skiing without a helmet. Or riding a car without a seatbelt. I just don't understand why you wouldn't take a simple precaution that could save you from serious injury or death. And especially not having your children do it.
Also, my son is 10 and wears a watch as well. I meant I am sure no one in this day and age let's their kids roam free without some sort of tracking device. It's easy to check up on them when you know where they are and to say you would have to tail them for hours in the car is ridiculous. You tell them I am going to check up on you, you won't know when and if I see you riding without a helmet I will embarrass the sh*t out of you in front of your friends and load you and your bike in the car in front of them. It's a pretty easy solution.

Yes - it was ridiculous! And I meant my son wears a watch - I tell him what time he should be home and he hopefully comes home... or else. Not a watch with a tracker. I do check up on him because its not like he is going very far (to be fair, he only started doing this this week - I refuse to buy him a phone!

My son is 10. He has a Gizmo Gadget watch. If you are letting your son ride without an adult you might want to consider it. The watches range from $100-$150 and only add $5 per month to you wireless plan. It enables you to track their location, call them and text them. It also has an auto-answer function if they don't answer the phone and allows you to eaves drop on them for up to a minute.

You definitely live somewhere much nicer than I do. everyone in my neighborhood is generally a sh!thead. This doesn’t surprise me one bit. There are 4 year olds on my street whose parents laugh that I have a car seat. No car seats, no helmets. I always say it’s the one place on earth to escape Darwinism.
