Kindergarten expectations

Is it true that kindergartners are now doing what children of the 1970's and early 80's were doing in the first grade. Are the expectations a lot higher now. I would love to hear from parents who have kids in the school system.

Re: Kindergarten expectations

DS is in kindergarten and he is reading level 1 books, writing out descriptions of things, addition and subtraction, counting to 100, 10 times table (grouping things in 10), lots of pattern forming.. it's def work for them but they are doing lots of art projects and they all seem to be ready for it. I was terrified in the beginning of the year but I suppose it all works out.

Kind of what I did in first grade. It seems the OT that comes to see my son was telling me that they don't do things like that in kindergarten. I guess it is just another OT trying to justify her job so she gets money from Nassau County.

Re: Kindergarten expectations

YES! DD is definately doing work that I did in the early 80s in 1st and 2nd grade. They do so much more these days! I am shocked at the work DD does in school and the things she has learned this year. It is truly amazing!! She is doing the same type of things that the poster listed above.

Wow, have you come across many OT's that would purposefully recommend services that weren't warranted so they would make more $? I've been an Pediatric OT for 11 years and I have only met 1 OT that would do that and she was a total idiot.

Yes, I was baffled at the work that DS was bringing home last year. He picked up the concepts so quickly.

Now in 1st grade he is already working on fractions and probability. He's also writing stories and knows how to break down the elements of a sentence.

Re: Kindergarten expectations

Everytthing I have heard is that kids do things earlier nowadays, especially in NY. This is another reason that parents sometimes hold back kids who are young for their grade. I am not holding back my young child who will be 4 when he starts K, but the expectations do concern me.

Re: Kindergarten expectations

YES YES YES! I have an old parenting book from the late 80's and it says counting to 10 is a 6 yr old TASK!!!!! They expect that from 2 yr olds these days!

I agree with this! My DS is in first grade and is working on geometry! He has timed math tests where he has to do 20 additional and subtraction problems in 2 minutes! Its crazy!
