KMart Will Be Open on Thanksgiving - How do you feel about this?
I don't like it personally. I think everyone deserves a day off to spend the holiday with their families and/or friends.
What do you think?

I have the feeling that in retail working holidays pays very well, and some people want to do it for that reason. Not everyone has a family to be with on the holidays!

I don't think it's terrible for some stores to be open for a few hours on a holiday since not everyone celebrates all the same holidays.
That it will probably roll into a 24 hour stint for black Friday bugs me more.

A FEW years back i worked for kmart and it sucked. and the pay its not great. i hated kmart thank god i left. they never close only for christmas.

It honestly doesn't bother me that much. Lots of other people work on Thanksgiving, too -- Obviously necessary people like firemen and policemen, but also restaurant workers (plenty of catering halls and restaurants have Thanksgiving dinner), some supermarkets, etc.
My friend works in security and she actually loves work on the holidays. She specifically requests to work Thanksgiving and Christmas because the pay is so good and she does family stuff either later in the day, in the morning, or another day depending on what shift she works.

See this was my suspicion... that they don't even pay their employees well, if not just for working that day alone.

I don't think its bad at all. Unless they force employees who want to celebrate come in.
there are many reasons why an employee could work. just to name a few: needs the money, has no family, doesn't celebrate, etc.
When I needed money years ago, I used to hate when my job was closed and I wasn't going to get paid, but I really needed the money and I would have worked if they were open.
I was also on the flip side of that though. I didn't like when my job was open and they needed people to work and they would bug you to work, and I wanted to spend it with my family. but I was never forced into working

I think it is an absolute disgrace. Many of these employees are young adults who aren't really given a decision as to whether they should work or not. I would never go to a store that opened that day.

Restaurant workers are necessities?
I stated that obviously necessary people like police and firemen work, but ALSO restaurant workers and supermarket employees, etc. I don't view them as "necessary."
I've flown on Thanksgiving and most stores in the airports were open. None of those people are necessary workers... I work a job that is technically closed on Thanksgiving, but that doesn't mean I wouldn't have to work if an emergency came up. I could be asked to work a holiday or weekend pretty easily - even Thanksgiving.
I just don't think it's the end of the world. Hasn't KMart been open on Thanksgiving for a long time now? I would think employees are aware of what holidays the store is open...

I personally don't like that they are open. Its the one day a year everyone should have off (unless your a cop/nurse/etc, more "must need" jobs). There really is no neccessity to having KMart open,.

they should get holiday pay.
Some people don't get together with family for holidays or maybe they don't celebrate it either.
I don't have a strong opinion on it either way. It's all commercial..many stores stay open until midnight on Christmas.

grocery stores are only open till like 12N-4pmish. KMART is open all day!!!
Just like bakeries, delis, etc. So it still leaving workers plenty of time to spend with their familes.

I used to have to work there on holidays, years ago. It made me feel so sad. The store was busy for the morning sales, but then would die down when everyone was with their families. My dad used to bring dinner up there for me  It always made me miss my family on that day.
Of course no one in corporate or upper management had to work those holidays

ITA. If you work in retail, you don't usually get to make up your own schedule. I worked in retail in HS & college & I hated working the holidays knowing that my family was still going to celebrate.

I also believe it is a disgrace. What happened to the days when holidays came around and everything was shut down (even Sundays everything was closed!). Stores were closed and it was just about forgetting about the hustle and bustle of everyday living. Family was what was important. Our society moves too fast these days. It truly is a shame.

I worked on Thanksgiving while working at Haagen Dazs.
b/c we all know how"essential" freshly scooped vanilla is for your apple and pumpkin pies 
I didn't care. I worked, and went home. by the time I go there, dinner was ready. I was VERY thankful for that
people work in shifts. if you work at four, you have dinner at 2.
if you work UNTIL four, you have dinner at 6.
and if you ARE working, you can be thankful you still have a job. 
I don't see the harm. especially since you are not forced to break a RELIGIOUS tradition....which is different.

I have no problem with KMart being open on Thanksgiving. The people work in shifts. No one is going to be there all day. They can work around their schedules and stilll have time with their families. Remember, there are people that do not celebrate Thanksgiving. There are people that are happy KMart is going to be open that day.
Just like there are people who still fly on Thanksgiving. Because of the people flying, my husband is working. Is it essential for people to fly on that day? Probably not. But he is working just like he'll work on Christmas Eve, Christmas Day and New Year's Eve. It's his job and we deal with it.

Michaels Crafts will be open from 6pm-9pm on Thanksgiving. I think it's a crummy way to treat employees. Luckly, my BIL was able to switch shifts with someone so he can make Thanksgiving. My sister wasn't so lucky. She has to work the 11:30pm-11:30am shift at the Tanger outlets, so she is going to sleep during the day.

I think it is wrong. The reason they are open is because there are so many people that go shopping. So don't shop on Thanksgiving and they won't open.
