Given the fact that the economy is the way it is, and some people need to earn money any way that they can- i dont think its such an evil idea to give that opportunity to make some extra $$$.
Then again, I'm also working Thanksgiving (eve and day) and Christmas (eve and day). DH and i are celebrating over the weekend- its not the end of the world.

For years PC Richards used to run an ad saying that they would be closed on Thankgiving and that they felt it was terrible that some retailers would be open. (at least, I think it was PCs)
I guess I'm on the side of it not being necessary. Obviously police, fire, etc. need to work- but it would be nice if retailers were closed. I can't imagine wanting to shop on Thanksgiving.
Is it customary for these stores to be open? I wonder if retailers are panicking about slow holiday sales.

I ran to KMart last year on Thanksgiving to get a tablecloth, so I was thankful they were open. I did feel bad for whomever had to work...but I"m sure they get paid well to work on that day.
I do agree, everyone deserves to have a holiday off.

Well.. last year I ended up going to Kmart on Thanksgiving morning because I needed to get my nephew a birthday gift. So i was glad they were open.. but it does s*ck..

I worked at kmart in high school. Didn't bother me I worked on thanksgiving got paid time and a half plus 8 hours of holiday pay. I wanted to work.

K-mart has been open on Thanksgiving for years. I worked there when I was in HS.
I used to work a 4 hour shift in the morning and then have the rest of the afternoon off. If I remember correctly they close early around 8.
There are a lot of people that have to work on the holidays these days.

I agree... yet, I worked at a hotel where there are NO holidays off. Heck, the place never closes!! I didn't like it, but we took turns working holidays and it worked out fine.

I dont see the big deal, it doesnt bother me - its just one of the jobs that crappy days and hrs comes with the territory unfortunately.

I know several people who dont celebrate thanksgiving, whether it be cultural reasons or just cause of different circumstances. Unfortunately, I am sure these ppl prob dont make up the majority of employees at Kmart.

The owners of my company for one. They are Syrian and refer to Thanksgiving as "your holiday".

I feel very strongly about stores being open on holidays. I think it is disgusting. I had to work every holiday and yes, I happened to work the shifts where I would be home in time for dinner but I was lucky bc someone else was cooking for me. I think that ALL non essential employees should have the day off and have a chance to celebrate ::gasp:: for the ENTIRE day!

you know - i really do not like it
i dont agree with it and i think it goes right along with the breakdown of American society, morals, value and the importance of family
I remember when i was a kid NOTHING was even open on Sundays!!

I saw that they would be open the entire day when I was there the other day. My honest reaction was - I wish everything would go back to the way it used to be - stores were closed on Sundays and Holidays. I'm ok with Sundays being open because let's face, most of us work and need our weekends to catch up. But in general, I feel like our whole country needs to take a step back - go back to the way things were in a way, much simpler.

The problem is....they get enough business that day to warrant opening the store. If people did not go shopping on Thanksgiving day, the stores wouldnt open.
That's why stores open at midnight on black Friday - shoppers will be at the door.
That's why stores are open 24 hours a day on the days leading up to Christmas - shoppers are there.
If there was no demand for it, the stores would stop supplying it.

Its the one day a year everyone should have off (unless your a cop/nurse/etc, more "must need" jobs).
i'm a cop... just because my job is a necessity doesn't mean i deserve to spend a holiday with my family any less... it tends to stink all around. i don't have a prob with kmart being open... their families aren't more important than mine! sometimes working nights, holidays, weekends etc comes with the territory of a job... if you can't hack it, find a different job! JMHO

Plenty of people don't celebrate the holiday or don't have family or friends to.
My DH works all holidays (FDNY) and it just part of the job, we make do.
