Re: KMart Will Be Open on Thanksgiving - How do you feel about this?
i think that a store being open is different than people that work in a service (emergency services) of course they "deserve" to be with their families but I also know lots of cops that volunteer to work and would rather have off xmas or new years

Re: KMart Will Be Open on Thanksgiving - How do you feel about this?
Doesn 't bother me in the least. I used to work in retail and in a grocery store when I was younger. The shifts were shorter and the store closed early. We just adjusted our eating time around when or if I was working. At that age, I was more interested in the $$ then eating at a certain time. I used to REQUEST to work the holidays! I always volunteered to work Christmas Eve (since I'm jewish), I would also request to work NYE, and this allowed me to have NYD off!

Re: KMart Will Be Open on Thanksgiving - How do you feel about this?
I have worked plenty of holiday's before and it never bothered me
I was always happy to make the extra $$$ and we would eat before or after
it's not the end of the world
what if you only worked a few days a week and one of those days was a holiday- in retail - you don't get paid days off- so it might actually hurt you to not work

It doesn't bother me. DH is working. In fact, he's lucky to be even getting off for Christmas this year... at least at his company though, they're compensated nicely for working holidays.

I also believe it is a disgrace. What happened to the days when holidays came around and everything was shut down (even Sundays everything was closed!). Stores were closed and it was just about forgetting about the hustle and bustle of everyday living. Family was what was important. Our society moves too fast these days. It truly is a shame.
I sort of feel the same way.
Christmas is a religious holiday at the heart - and some people don't celebrate or don't need to celebrate or whatever. BUT it's not about the day - it's about slowing down.
I am old enough to remember when most stores were shut on Sunday. I remember my mom rushing to the store on a Saturday afternoon because she would have to go out of her way to get something if she needed it before Monday.
But it was a different time. SAHM's were more common, a work day really was 9-5 and people didn't need as many conveniences.
I guess when I am missing lazy Sunday's and empty holiday parking lots that I am really just nostalgic for a time when people could survive at a slower pace.

I agree. I also think it's along the workworkwork mentality. I'm starting to see that society is missing the big picture. Family coming together.
I'm curious, for those residing in other countries...are stores open on New Years or Bastille Day or whatever other holidays are celebrated or is it just us?

I understand that from a religous perspective; but Thanksgiving is a non-denominational holiday.
Should people of the Jewish faith then be upset that stores are NEVER closed for Jewish holidays unless they are Jewish owned or in orthodox neighborhoods?

Re: KMart Will Be Open on Thanksgiving - How do you feel about this?
it doesnt really bother me either.... i mean, yeah it suucks that they cant be with their family all day for thanksgiving... but like other ppl said, maybe they dont have family or maybe the are working in the morning and then will be with their family in the afternoon
i worked @ pathmark for 4 years and would ALWAYS work on thanksgiving morning... you cant even imagine how many ppl do ALL their thanksgiving shopping at 7am on thanksgiving!! its crazy!!!!
but i agree with what some ppl said above me - i didnt mind working on the holidays... i got paid more & it always seemed like everyone was in a great mood that day (in the supermarket anyways) plus we were always SO busy my shift flew by!!!

Re: KMart Will Be Open on Thanksgiving - How do you feel about this?
I remember when I was in HS getting a job at the Millerage Inn. I came home with my long skirt uniform and told my mom that I would probably be working Christmas Eve or Christmas Day. She just about threw a fit and told me I needed to quit.
Some places are just open on holidays. And it sucks to have to be the person to work it. And it also sucks that these people who are working there probably didn't have much of a choice, and really don't have much of a choice about where they're working, either. Hopefully they are getting good holiday pay, and maybe they chose to work on that day because they need it to support their family. Some people do need to make the choice between spending time with their family and supporting them. A cruel fact of life, but still a fact they need to live with.
Hopefully, like I said, they are being well compensated for their working on that day, and if Kmart is open on Christmas, that they get to be off on that day, alternating with someone else.

Re: KMart Will Be Open on Thanksgiving - How do you feel about this?
I agree that something needs to be open to get last minute gravy, and food items, as well as emergency items-medicine, sanitary napkins...ect. Certainly not every store needs to be open, but hey thats competition.
I work mostly every holiday-12 hours shifts- i work in health care so have no choice. I do not get paid more for holidays, so at least those who work at k-mart will. Its a great opportunity for those really suffering economically to work, i see nothing wrong with that. If it bothers you, then don't shop there.
I agree the morality of this country is slipping but a store being open on a holiday is merely a symptom of the problem-not the disease. Economically, no one can afford to lose a workday this year.

If their staff is wanting to work then Im all for it.. but if they are being forced to work by saying they will have no job if they dont.. that upsets me. People need money these days so if they dont mind working then all is good.

Re: KMart Will Be Open on Thanksgiving - How do you feel about this?
we have shaped and created the world in which we now live in and lament.
like a few pp's have said, if there wasn't a DEMAND, they wouldn't be open.
if we can't blame every other company every other day for capitalizing on demand...we can't knock Kmart or anyone else.
IT'S OUR FAULT.
and for the person who asked about Euro traditions, in MANY countries (especially catholic ones) most places are either closed or open very limited hours on Sunday.

There are a lot of people who do not celebrate Christmas and Easter. It bothers me that everything shuts down and I cannot get things done that I need to.

this is true.
I think we need to keep in mind that we are STILL an immigrant country with different cultures and religions...at least in these parts.
If you're newly arrived, you barely know who the Pilgrims were...they don't teach that in the 1st grade in France or Poland.
and if you are Hindu or jewish or muslim, Easter Sunday will not mean all that much to you...just as Rosh Hoshana or Ramadan doesn't mean that much to Catholics.
If you feel so strongly that FAMILY is important and then BE with them during YOUR holidays...but don't take services away from those that DON'T celebrate.

Re: KMart Will Be Open on Thanksgiving - How do you feel about this?
I worked at friendly's from 89-94 and they were always open until 2 pm
I also worked for an airline that was open 365 days. But we were next to Aer Lingus and very jealous when they all had off 12/26, since they didn't have flights in Ireland on 12/25

Given the fact that the economy is the way it is, and some people need to earn money any way that they can- i dont think its such an evil idea to give that opportunity to make some extra $$$.
Then again, I'm also working Thanksgiving (eve and day) and Christmas (eve and day). DH and i are celebrating over the weekend- its not the end of the world. \\\
oh don't worry give it a year or two and you'll get them off i promise!! i'm working thanksgiving but not the day after so i can stuff myself just the same when i get home from work. the money is good but i'm not so sure how much better it is at kmart on a holiday.

I actually wasn't scheduled to work Thanksgiving, but since i dont have kids or have to cook for family, i offered to switch with someone that did and really wanted off. (though, i was still shocked that i wasn't scheduled that day! )
I guess that's my point though about it not being so bad to work that day. To me, the holidays are what (and, When) you make them. DH and I will still have a really nice Thanksgiving- it just won't be on the same day as everyone else
