I separate whites and darks but wash them both in cold water. The only thing I was in hot water is towels and sheets.

Laundry question
I throw everything together except towels and sheets. All clothes are washed in cold water and towels and sheets are washed in hot water.

Laundry question
I can't imagine separating everything as we don't have our own laundry machines. I do one load of stuff on cold that we don't put in a dryer (our workout clothes and delicates--this is just so we don't have to deal with separating the stuff out in the filthy laundry room), one load of stuff we do put in dryer on cold, and then sheets, socks and towels on hot.

Is there a reason why people separate their towels and sheets? It has never occurred to me to do this.

For me, so they can be washed in hot while all the rest can be washed in cold (to stop shrinkage potential).

Because I wash them in hot water, and the rest of my laundry is washed in cold.

Laundry question
I throw all the sh!t in together. I don't have time to separate. Towels and sheets included. I have two teens who try things on and then throw them in the laundry.

I wash everything in cold water except towels I use sanitize mode for. sheets I do warm, and whites I use bleach with so sock and t-shirts.
I do separate though. I wash most of my clothes on hand wash because they have to be and they need to be hung dry. I do DH work cloths separate. and my kids loads are separate from each other and me and DH.

Hot water will ruin your clothes way faster than cold.
Shrinkage, color fade, plus hot breaks down the fibers faster .
I only use hot for sheets and towels- and even then it's more warm than hot

Laundry question
I do two different loads of laundry:
warm water - work clothes, jeans and "nice" items
hot water - socks, underwear, sheets, tshirts, everything else
I always thought that hot (or at the very least) warm water is needed to CLEAN. Plus hot water kills germs.
Have I been misinformed throughout my laundry life? (plus we don't have our own machine so we're not paying extra money for the hot water)
I do have a question - I just bought a bunch of red cotton socks from GAP. I am a bit worried about the color running when I wash it. How can I prevent this? Soak them in hot water first before washing them?

Yep. I find that my whites actually stay white and are not dingy looking because I'm not mixing them with darks. I also usually use white vinegar in my whites cycle, never bleach. Bleach destroys fibers. Plus the vinegar is a disinfectant and cleans the machine at the same time. I use vinegar as well for my towels with detergent.

Unless the water is boiling it won't kill much in terms of viruses or bacteria
Soap helps to clean things, I never had an issue with washing my clothes in cold, but then again I don't have a microscope to see if any germs linger.
I am sure they do.
But they smell clean and look clean and that is my main concern

Cold water cleans just as well as warm.
Use white vinegar in the cycle with the red socks - it sets the color. I would also try and do the red socks with a load of just reds or blacks only the first time you wash just in case the color does run.

LINT! I've washed brand new towels all by themselves and the lint I get sometimes is crazy! Plus I have so many towels/sheet sets that I don't need to wash them constantly, so I do them on their own like once a month.

This is exactly what I do. I only wash sheets and towels seperatley and heavy stuff like jeans and sweatshirts because they take forever to dry if I put it in with the regular clothes. I hate laundry and have enough of it to do as a family of five without sorting it.

I usually wash in warm but sheets in hot. But I'm going to try cold washes. Except underwear. Might throw those in with sheets and towels.

You can start to kill bacteria at 140-150F.
I have a washer in which I can choose the temp (in Celsius) that goes up by 10 degrees. Is this not standard nowadays or am I the weird one?
I do my towels and sheets on 140 and throw in a disinfection liquid for the last cycle.

I put the vinegar in the holder for fabric softener. I don't put vinegar in the bleach holder bc vinegar/bleach combo can create deadly fumes, so I don't take that chance even though I never use bleach. Vinegar is a natural fabric softener, so I often use this as a fabric softener on my DS clothes and all my towels. It makes the towels softer without inhibiting the absorbency.
When I run the CLEAN cycle on the washing machine, I let it fill up with a bit of water, sprinkle baking soda in, and put vinegar in the fabric softener compartment to clean the machine.

My clothes: Separate lights and darks, wash in cold, dry on low, hang dry anything delicate.
Kid clothes: Wash all together in cold, dry on low.
Hubs clothes: Separate lights, darks, work clothes, good clothes. Anything good gets washed in cold, dry on medium, everything rest gets washed on medium and dry on medium.
Bedding and towels: Wash on hot, dry on high.
I will also use this  to say that homemade detergent is a major no no - all those recipes are simply soaps or boosters, they do not actually contain any cleansing properties and will build up soap scum over time on your clothes. I strip my bedding and towels every few months to release any built up chemicals or minerals. Also, no fabric softener and no dryer sheets - again, they build up in the clothing fibers.
