Layoffs. Is it better to tell them on Fri or Mon?
If you were being let go would you rather be told on Friday or Monday?
I need to let 2 people go.
I found out Friday morning and am waiting to tell them till this afternoon. I didn't tell them Friday because I didn't want to ruin their weekend but now I'll be ruining their week.
which is worse?

If you're doing it today, I'd be more pizzed that you had me work all day, THEN let me go. If you're going to do it, do it before lunch so I can go home and b!tch about it, and not have to sit through rush hour traffic.

I think it sucks either way, so I wouldn't stress too much over the day, but I think I agree with you.
Is it a go home right now lay off? In that case I agree with the above & wouldn't wait untill the end of the day.

Re: Layoffs. Is it better to tell them on Fri or Mon?
depends on when their last day needs to be. if they have to work the rest of this week, i would have rather found out on a friday so i had two days to myself to process it.

Well since it's already Monday, you're kind of backed into a corner of having to tell them today.
I'd do it sooner rather than later though.

Re: Layoffs. Is it better to tell them on Fri or Mon?
I think Fridays are "easier".
It's easier if you are paid byweekly too.
I would also be pi$$ed if you told me later then 10am on a Monday.
If done on a Friday. I could "grief" over the weekend and get myself ready for job search the following Monday.
I feel being laid off on Monday is REALLY bad. Waste of the whole week to recover.

Re: Layoffs. Is it better to tell them on Fri or Mon?
Never a good day to be laid off. But I would say Monday and the earlier in the day the better. I was laid off right after I got back from lunch - as in, I had just brought it back to eat at my desk. That sucked. I would had rather been told when I first got to work.

I agree. If they don't have to work the rest of the week then I say do it ASAP so they can have the rest of the day off to unwind

They can leave right away and get lump sum payout of severance or stay till 11/30 and then get lump sum.

Re: Layoffs. Is it better to tell them on Fri or Mon?
When I was laid off in 2009, I was told on a Thursday morning, and was in my car by 9:45 -10am. I would have rather they laid me off on a Monday so I had enough time to file for UE, set up resumes, job interviews, & basically absorb the shock by the end of the week. But in my Department Wednesdays were critical is paying expenses to the employees. so, they basically used me to get out one more cycle before they had to downsize the department.
I think I would have been more upset if they waited till the end of the day or week to fire me b/c I would feel they were trying to squeak one last work day/week out of me.

If this is the case I would tell them now so they have a few minutes to decide what they want to do...

Re: Layoffs. Is it better to tell them on Fri or Mon?
i would tell them today and like right now. that way they can take lunch to decide when they want to leave and take it from there. i wouldn't wait until friday bc that's a whole week wasted that they could have been looking for a new job and every day closer to the holidays it gets is going to make it worse...

Re: Layoffs. Is it better to tell them on Fri or Mon?
I think Friday's stink for layoffs. You go home, you fester, stew and can't do a thing about it.
At least in the early part of the week, you can go home, apply for UE and make some calls and get yourself out there. It helps with the mental part.
Also, I would work until the end of the month to get more money and still start doing my networking unless the lump sum now includes the pay for the rest of the month.

I ALSO would NOT expect them to give me an answer over lunch time. That's completely unfair IMO. I would give them the rest of the day off to process and ask for an answer on staying or leaving now.

ITA. This is something they probably have to discuss with their family/spouse, so you can't expect an answer in 60 minutes.

Re: Layoffs. Is it better to tell them on Fri or Mon?
I say Friday. I spend the most amount of "extra" money over the weekend. I'd hate to spend a lot of money over the weekend, just to find out I have no income for a while when I came back to work on Monday....

Tell them now. Give them a choice to stay the rest of the day or go home to think about it. Tell them the deadline that you need the answer on whether or not they will continue to work until Nov 30th.
If they can choose to work a few extra weeks or not... then you should tell them as soon as possible. Don't wait on it.

Re: Layoffs. Is it better to tell them on Fri or Mon?
So wait - you are asking if you should do it now or this coming Friday?
Just do it now. As you can see from the responses, your employees' preference could go either way and there's no way to know which so you might as well get it over with.

Re: Layoffs. Is it better to tell them on Fri or Mon?
me personally on a weekend so i have a few days to collect myself then look for a new job come Monday but since its Monday now I rather know asap this way i can search asap. I am guessing your giving them a headsup so they still will be working there until the date they are no longer needed.
