Lesson plans... is this allowed?
We just had a meeting since they recently collected lesson plans and we were told that now they need to be typed! It's time consuming enough coming up with what to do for the lesson (which I try to do while I'm at school).. and now I have to type it all out?!
This isn't a requirement for every subject.. just math.. which is probably the hardest subject to type out since for me it usually involves writing formulas, lining up numbers, drawing 3d shapes........
Anyway back to my original question .. are they allowed to make this a requirement??!?!
It's a NYC school btw, so there IS a union!

Re: Lesson plans... is this allowed?
i always type up formal lesson plans for everyyyy class i teach and keep them in plastic inserts for each unit..but i teach english so im sure its a bit easier..plus when i teach something the next year everything is right there along with handouts
my friend teaches math however, and her principal requires this (mine doesn't-i just do it anyways)..she always complains about how frustrating it is..
this is the third school i've been in though, and the first to not require some type of written plan
one required us to submit to our chair each week all of our formal plans the other required a brief overview of each lesson emailed to the district curriculum head each week
i don't think this really answers your question though

Thanks! Although I think you misunderstood what I meant! Actually, I don't think I really explained myself fully!
We have to have a complete lesson plan for every lesson we teach. This includes a specific format they impose on us that includes the basic components of a lesson plan (aim, matierials, standards, vocabulary, anticipated problems, mini lesson, differentiated instruction, reflection, and homework) ...... You're supposed to have this for every lesson you teach EVERY DAY... Not just formal lesson plans where you gt observed.
For the lessons that need to be type, now they're saying for MATH we need to type up our everyday plans... not just formal lesson plans- which I DO type up without a problem!
This is just for everyday plans Which is supposed to look like a formal plan since we are required to use that format everyday.
So ........ now to ask my question again.... can they require this of us? (that in addition to all the other criteria, it now must also be typed)

I agree..they say that you HAVE to HAVE lesson plans (which makes sense) but that the format is not to be dictated to you..you can choose any format you want...that's as per the contract/union...I know you have a weak union rep but COME ON...
ETA that the plans can be collected at any time, as well, but as long as you have them, you cannot have actions brought against you..

I say file a grievance! Talk to your UFT Rep. It is not allowed according to our contract.

You do not have to type up lesson plans. Some people write them in lesson plan books, others in regular black & white composition notebooks and others type them up. I heard that you are supposed to have a lesson everyday, BUT you get to choose how it is written. I would def. go to your UFT rep.

haha that is what i type for everyday-its usually between 1-2 pgs per day per class
i just don't know if they can MAKE you do this
you don't even want to know about my observation lessons

... black and white composition notebooks?! My school is insane! One person wrote their lessons in a spiral notebook until some point in November when she basically got TORN APART at a staff meeting when the principal saw she was doing this! In the meantime. . I write mine in a notebook until I hear the rumor that they will be coming around to collect It's so ridiculous.. it's like we're putting on a 'show' ... it's the same plan, who cares how it's written?!

As everyone else has already said, you cannot be required to type and you cannot be required to use a specific format (although if you had to cave on one, I'd prefer to use their format and not have to type)

Re: Lesson plans... is this allowed?
thank god i am not in your school. i never write lesson plans. does post-it notes in my binder and what's in my head count?
DH is a NYC teacher and was also told he must write lesson plans. Format was not dictated to him, but what he did was create a template with his Do Now, procedure, independent work, etc. and a box underneath each section to fill in. he photocopies a bunch in advance and then each day, he just handwrites in real quick what he's going to do. it takes very little time but he still has "something" if they come to collect.

Are you tenured or untenured? I dont work in the city anymore but as an untenured teacher in a LI school I was required to type up my lessons. If you arent tenured, there isn't much a union can do!

I dont think they are allowed to... I also thought that they can ask you for only THAT days' lesson; not a weeks worth of lessons (if that is what they are doing)...

Re: Lesson plans... is this allowed?
Also to add onto what another poster just said: In NYC they are only allowed to request the lesson plan for THAT DAY! But, my school asks us to do the lesson plans for the week. If you have it for the week then thats great- if not then they cant say anything. I used to do it day by day and now I just plan for the week. I find it easier to just sit down on Thurs. night and plan for the next week so I dont have to worry about it everyday after work.
It sounds like your school is annoying just like mine is lol! One more week until our February break!!

Re: Lesson plans... is this allowed?
I currently work in a private school , but I worked 10 years in a public school, though never NYC. All I have to say is this is fing ridiculous. And so counter productive- seriously your time should be sent teaching, not typing up lessons. I taught in Howard County, MD which was recently ranked one of the top public school systems in the country. Lesson plans were never expected. They hired professionals and treated them as such. Typing lesson plans is busy work and will not make someone a better teacher.
ETA: I'm sorry it just makes me so mad when people who have masters degrees and are obviously dedicated to their job are treated as if they are children.

Re: Lesson plans... is this allowed?
THEY are not ALLOWED to dictate FORMAT UNLESS YOU ARE ON TRACK FOR RECEIVING A 'U" Rating. THEN AND ONLY THEN CAN THEY DO THIS. Go over the head of the building union rep and call your DISTRICT REP...ie Queens UFT office.....

NO they cannot impose a format on you and being in NYC, I don't think it matters if you are tenured or not...this is a contract violation..ugh..your school! It's making ME angry!!

1. Like everyone else has said, you cannot be told the structure of writing your lesson plans.
2. What concerns me is how the DOE is telling us, "Well, it's just for this subject." Before you know it, it'll be for EVERY subject, and then it'll be individualized goals for EACH student, in EVERY subject. If our union doesn't nip this in the bud, it'll explode.
Sometimes I think the DOE hates us.

Wait a sec, are you not supposed to have ind. goals and objectives for every student? DH's school was making him do that for writing, math and reading!!! (and he wasnt even the classroom teacher at that time!)

This is my chairperson's point of view when I recently spoke to him. He made it clear that when you are a new hire, he likes to see typed up lesson plans so that he can get an idea if you are on the right path. I had to write plans Sept - Dec of my first year. At which point, he said I could stop as it was obvious I was planning and knew what I was doing.

Yes, I do it for reading and math, and it is very time consuming. And you do it twice--once in your binder, then I have to post it where the kids can see it. So, double the work. My point is that next it'll be SS, then science, then art, then music, then nose picking, then breathing air, so on.

Re: Lesson plans... is this allowed?
Regarding individual goals for kids- I believe the UFT is suing the DOE over this. There are schools that are requiring teachers to write individual goals for ALL kids.
My admins were asking for this till the rep squashed it. I have 62 students and there is no way I can write individual goals for ALL of them. They settled on having the kids write their goals, which IMO is a good idea.
I feel like so many of these directives are handed down without a word about how it's supposed to help the kids be better students or help us be better teachers.

Right now our principal is making us write SMART goals for each student. It is very time consuming and a PITA!!! I teach high school and have 100+ students!

yup same for us.... glad I have special ed.. 11 kids! Although, they each need a goal for each subject it's so annoying... and it takes away from valuable teaching time .. AND... I don't think it benefits them at all, to be honest. Maybe it would for some kids, but my kids don't really "get it" and they already have IEP goals to focus on!
