Regarding individual goals for kids- I believe the UFT is suing the DOE over this. There are schools that are requiring teachers to write individual goals for ALL kids.
My admins were asking for this till the rep squashed it. I have 62 students and there is no way I can write individual goals for ALL of them. They settled on having the kids write their goals, which IMO is a good idea.
I feel like so many of these directives are handed down without a word about how it's supposed to help the kids be better students or help us be better teachers.
Right now our principal is making us write SMART goals for each student. It is very time consuming and a PITA!!! I teach high school and have 100+ students!
yup same for us.... glad I have special ed.. 11 kids! Although, they each need a goal for each subject it's so annoying... and it takes away from valuable teaching time .. AND... I don't think it benefits them at all, to be honest. Maybe it would for some kids, but my kids don't really "get it" and they already have IEP goals to focus on!
I am doing this too...because my admin. requires it. If you want I can send you my document....it has reading writing and math. I tape them on their desks...done!

What are SMART goals and how are they different from from reading and math goals?

SMART =
S- Specific M- Measurable A- Attainable R- Realistic T- Time-bound
Basically it stands for 'waste of time'

OMG my school is starting this CRAP! No one is doing them though. I have my goals typed up in large font from last year and they aren't "smart". They are hanging up everyday. Oh well!

Re: Lesson plans... is this allowed?
I hate to be negative, but for some of my kids, their goals should be:
- come to school on time - come to school, period - come prepared with homework and supplies - stop eating Cheetos for breakfast
Those other goals would not be needed if they could do the above.

ditto 100%
Whoever made up the term 'smart goals' should spend a day in my classroom and watch this one kid in particular walk in smelling like marijuana halfway through the morning... and then watch as he falls asleep on his desk until lunch!! But no......... he needs a SMART goal.
I am going to have him write next time "By June 2010 I will be able to come to school on time by setting my alarm clock 100% of the time as measured by teacher observation and attendance records"

Re: Lesson plans... is this allowed?
Sorry for the vehemence but I'm so angry for you that they're asking (telling?) you to do that. No f'ing way. Uh-uh. Not allowed. You have to have a lesson plan every day, but the format is up to you. If the math teachers roll over on this one, soon the other departments will be told to do it and it will be the norm for your school.
You and your colleagues are professionals with a graduate education. You were hired because you are competent. The administration needs to chill out and let you do your job. You need to get together and all decide not to do it. Show a united front. The administration can bully a few teachers, but if it's an entire department they should back down. (I hope. Unless they're nuts. Which is what the administration down the block from you is, PennyCat, and why I left...)

Its true though!!! Some of my kids NEVER bring pencils to school! Very annoying!!!
School starts at 8:00 NOT 9:30!

As far as I know daily lesson plans are required. However as far as I know you are not required to type them.

Re: Lesson plans... is this allowed?
according to our union rep (nyc school) you must have lesson plans but administration cannot dictate the format. she's even gone as far to say you can write them up on a piece of toilet paper if you want. also, you only need to have lesson plans on hand for that day. they are not permitted to look back in your plan book. she suggests keeping you plan book clipped to discourage it. i work in a pretty strong union school. the staff would never stand for lesson plans being collected or follow any demands like that. we just would ignore it. untenured teachers are a different story of course. my understanding is that once administration puts their demands in writing you can go ahead and use that as evidence to grieve.

Re: Lesson plans... is this allowed?
Thanks everyone!
It's hard to really judge my administration since this is my first teaching job so I have no means of comparison!
What I do know is 85% of the staff in my school is below 35. The school is filled with young teachers who have been working AT MOST about 6 or 7 years..... (with a few exceptions)
On the surface it seems like the staff is brainwashed by the administration but when you talk to people individually they all complain about it.......
I'm basically in the situation right now where I can be right or I can be happy.....

We just had a meeting since they recently collected lesson plans and we were told that now they need to be typed! It's time consuming enough coming up with what to do for the lesson (which I try to do while I'm at school).. and now I have to type it all out?!
This isn't a requirement for every subject.. just math.. which is probably the hardest subject to type out since for me it usually involves writing formulas, lining up numbers, drawing 3d shapes........
Anyway back to my original question .. are they allowed to make this a requirement??!?!
It's a NYC school btw, so there IS a union!
i think they can do what ever they want because I think technically we arent even suppose to HAVE to write out formal lesson plans... yet we are told we need to.. and in my school can randomly come in and check.. but it is so wierd because tenured teachers refuse to do it, but are expected to. IDK i feel like this with anyhting haveing to do with the NYC DOE

Re: Lesson plans... is this allowed?
Are you NYC?
I think under UFT rules, a teacher can make their plan in whatever fashion they wish--a supervisor can ask to see the plan, but to force you to type it--I don't know...
On a personal note, I like typing my lesson plans now because I tend to be disorganized and now I keep them all in little folders on a flash drive.

I also work in a union strong school--it's so important!
My administration is trying to get out the old timers and bring in newbies who are afraid of EVERYTHING and don't know their rights.
I'm so glad I have ten years in. I seriously don't give an f about any of the mayor/admins scare tactics.
