Re: Link Between Advanced Maternal Age and Autism Confirmed

thats really interesting and could certainly help correlate the increase in autism cases over the last 2 decades, and women waiting until later in life to have children....if I understood the article correctly.

thanks for posting this. I saw a pediatrician who had told me about this theory/study over 2 years ago.

i can definitely see a lot of merit in it.

Re: Link Between Advanced Maternal Age and Autism Confirmed

I also heard of a link between advanced age for the fathers and autistic children- cannot remember where I saw that thoughChat Icon

Interestingly enough- I do know several autistic kids (all boys), but they were all born to mothers in their 20's, who went on to have more children when they were older- who turned out NOT to have autism.

Tell me about it - I'm 36 and would love another. Although we are going in the direction of "No" - the thought is always there in the back of my mind. Chat Icon Chat Icon

Thanks for posting

I've heard the father's advanced age contributes to autism as well

Re: Link Between Advanced Maternal Age and Autism Confirmed

Cut & pasted from the article:

However, previous research has shown contradictory results regarding whether it is the mother, the father or both who contribute most to the increased risk of autism. For example, one study reported that fathers over 40 were six times more likely than fathers under 30 to have a child with autism.

"This study challenges a current theory in autism epidemiology that identifies the father's age as a key factor in increasing the risk of having a child with autism," said Janie Shelton, the study's lead author and a doctoral student in the UC Davis Department of Public Health Sciences. "It shows that while maternal age consistently increases the risk of autism, the father's age only contributes an increased risk when the father is older and the mother is under 30 years old. Among mothers over 30, increases in the father's age do not appear to further increase the risk of autism."

Same here- I am 95% sure we are done with our 1- but we could change our minds.

I also read something about a study of older dads and increased autism.

Re: Link Between Advanced Maternal Age and Autism Confirmed

Interesting. If you know someone who is autistic do you know what ages the parents are? I personally dont know any autistic kids so cannot comment but I would be interested to know. Thanks.

Re: Link Between Advanced Maternal Age and Autism Confirmed

I just hate these studies. I mean.. I understand the importance but I mean.. women in their late 30's and 40's who are pregnant or trying get freaked out and sad. Women who had their children later in life start blaming themselves for any delays. It's sad.

I just hope they take the information and start looking for ways to address it. Can we prevent autism in older moms? Detect it sooner? I need an up side.

Re: Link Between Advanced Maternal Age and Autism Confirmed

What is interesting is that PLENTY of autistic children have younger parents too.

It will make people believe that ONLY older parents will have children with autism when in fact this is not the case.

I think it might turn out to be a lot like the maternal age factor with children with down syndrome. The older the mother the more the chance of having a child born with down syndrome. However, most children who have down syndrome are born to women under 35 simply because women under 35 have more kids in general.

It's just a hunch, but it seems reasonable.
