It will make people believe that ONLY older parents will have children with autism when in fact this is not the case.

yes. that's the danger of studies like this. hopefully the media won't take the results of this study and run with them... which is what happens all too often.

the study finds that advanced maternal age is ASSOCIATED with autism... which is VERY different than saying advanced maternal age CAUSES autism.

but unfortunately, correlation is often mistaken for causality and it sends people into an uproar Chat Icon

I also think that typically older parents are more proactive about testing and reporting the results..

(Of course this is not ALL older parents, just a broad statement)

Thank you for posting this article. I do agree though that this information will be taken completely out of context by the media.

I just hate these studies. I mean.. I understand the importance but I mean.. women in their late 30's and 40's who are pregnant or trying get freaked out and sad. Women who had their children later in life start blaming themselves for any delays. It's sad.

I just hope they take the information and start looking for ways to address it. Can we prevent autism in older moms? Detect it sooner? I need an up side.

ITA with all your points.

What is interesting is that PLENTY of autistic children have younger parents too.

It will make people believe that ONLY older parents will have children with autism when in fact this is not the case.

Exactly! Often these studies lead people to have such misconceptions.

The two autistic children I know would be exceptions to this...and the parents went on to have kids not diagnosed with autism after the autistic one so...?? I know plenty of families with old fathers esp that don't have autistic kids so I find this study a bit ridiculous...there's gotta be more behind this.

I wouldn't consider them "exceptions" to what's being reported. It is NOT being reported that all kids with autism come from older moms. It's just saying "Advanced maternal age is linked to a significantly elevated risk of having a child with autism, regardless of the father's age..." ELEVATED RISK. That's all it's saying.

Re: Link Between Advanced Maternal Age and Autism Confirmed

This new study has been weighing on me heavily.Chat Icon I'm 35, and was hoping for number two. I'm already scared to have a #2 since Riley has EB (a genetic skin condition) and I'm worried our second child could have a worse, less manageable case of it. Adding this new factor to the mix makes me crazy nervous...

but yet, I know there is definitely more to autism than this...they're just noticing a correlation here in many cases. It's just hard not to be nervous about it.

Interesting. If you know someone who is autistic do you know what ages the parents are? I personally dont know any autistic kids so cannot comment but I would be interested to know. Thanks.

The parents I work and have worked with run between.....

Moms:

18 yrs old, to 46 years old (when they had their babies - YES - 46!)

Dads:

About the same

In my experiences, age did not have THAT much bearing. it was more genetics than age.

Ugh- while I'm thrilled headway is being made, this is very upsetting to me.Chat Icon

Tell me about it - I'm 36 and would love another. Although we are going in the direction of "No" - the thought is always there in the back of my mind. Chat Icon Chat Icon
