Re: Link between high # of ultrasounds and autism?
The research is based on mice who were inundated with an exorbitant amount of ulstrasound rays that would be the type of rays we get for our ultrasounds. But, it would be the equivalent of a ridiculous number of ultrasounds that we would never receive. I heard about this study when I 1st became pregnant, and I looked into it because I needed to go for growth checks, and needed more ultrasounds than typical. I think I had more than 5, and Cailen is fine.
there is also a study that in utero, the pores of the amniotic sac of a child with autism was more porous than that of a neurotypical child. This is still in its infancy regarding research, so there is nothing definitive, but it would be interesting to see if it would be the porous sac and the ultrasounds on top of that... But there is nothing yet here that anyone could even point a fingernail towards....

I actually did hear of this "idea" and it did make me cancel my 3d/4d bc of it. I didnt want to take any chances. I figured I'd see dd when she was born. I was impatiently waiting but I got through it. I dont necessarily think its true or not true but IMO...why chance it...so we didnt.

Re: Link between high # of ultrasounds and autism?
I've heard about the possible link...
I don't know about Autism specifically, but could it disrupt the DNA in cells? I think its possible. to quote from a site about ultrasounds- "An ultrasound is a form of energy, and even at low levels, laboratory studies have shown it can produce physical effect in tissue, such as jarring vibrations and a rise in temperature"
I had 2 my whole pregnancy, so far so good with DS.

I wonder if there is any correlation between twins having autism since you have ultrasounds every single appointment. I had 5 ultrasounds in the first two weeks after finding out I was pregnant.

my nephew as autism. parents need someone or something to blame. Vaccines, food dye, utrasounds, drugs given during pregnancy etc... Until we have real proof everything is a guess. It is mainly parents looking to "blame" something/someone. If it turns out to be genetic (which I believe it will) that is a lot harder to accept.
I have a tendency to agree. But what it really comes down to is we just DO NOT KNOW. That is the truest statement there is right now. And until there is some proven facts, well i can't buy into it all. I just take what is said and if i feel i can change somethings, i do to be on the cautious side.
I mean, why risk it? Not talking specifically about the ultrasounds but everything.
I can't say that it isn't all that far fetched to believe that excessive (and i do not think 5 is excessive) can and does have some effects.

The correlation to twins, triplets, or siblings having autism is genetics...

Re: Link between high # of ultrasounds and autism?
I am not against the fact that there could be a link but plenty of children had autism years ago and women had even less ultrasounds then we do now.
I am not an expert on autism. For those who know more about it. Is there more cases for the US vs. other countries (US vs Europe or vs developping countries). Although every country may not record the cases. If there are no real difference between the countries then I am not I am buying into that theory. A lot of countries do not have that many ultrasounds and they would still have cases of autism.

I know there are alot of cases in Britain, but I'm not sure of the number... Also, there are a lot of people in Britain... Also, more documented cases...
when I went to Thailand last August (06) I saw children with autism up in the mountains living in small villages with their parents - those cases were not documented....

That's my point. Children in the mountains of Thailand have autism also.
I mean there could be a link.

I am diabetic and had a ton, so this topic is making me a little nervous, but then I think about the diabetic women I know who also have had a ton of sonograms and their kids are fine. I always wondered about the amount of sonograms I was having and whether it was harming the baby, but my high risk doctor said there was no evidence and that she has never seen any adverse affect on any of her patients' children.

Re: Link between high # of ultrasounds and autism?
It's an interesting angle to the "trigger theory" -- the thought that one is pre-disposed gentically to autism, but *something* )whether it is vaccines, ultrasounds, environmental, or a combination of all) is triggering that gene to activate and cause the child to have autism.
If this is the case, then for those who've mentioned high #'s of ultrasounds, if your child is not predisposed genetically, you could have hundreds of US's without effect.

while I haven't heard of any links to autism or any other disease/developmental condition, I did read articles when i was pregnant basically saying that they aren't sure how good it is for the baby to be exposed to the waves over and over from dopplers & ultrasounds. They even went further to say they *thought* it bothered the babies b/c during doppler/ultrasound, the babies try and move away from the waves. I have no idea if any of this is true- but I did try to minimize the exposure- I didn't rent a doppler, etc.... and only had the ultrasounds that doc prescribed- nothing 4-d at special sonogram boutique, etc.
Dina- Same here for the same reasons.
