Re: little dogs vs. small children
I really don't believe that anyone views their dog on the same level as a child. I honestly believe anyone who says that they love their animal as much as I love my child, has never had a child. But hey - I could be wrong.
But I don't think the whole animals in stores has anything to do with thinking that a dog should have the same rights as a human. For some people it is as simple as the fact that dogs are allowed to be there - and they want to take advantage of that privilege. I have no issue with that. For the record - I think Marie falls into this category
But for some people - it really seems to be a matter of complete disregard for the feelings of others. And here is where the comparison comes in - because that type of personality will be the same whether they have a child or a dog. For example - when my kids were toddlers I would never think to bring them into a Saturday evening showing of a romantic comedy at my local movie theater. Not because they weren't ALLOWED - but because it would be inconsiderate to my fellow movie goers to bring a child who might cry, whine and cause a ruckus.
The kind of dog owner who sits their pooch in the kiddie seat at a food store where dogs are not allowed is the same kind of person who probably would allow their child to run amuck in a movie theatre at 8pm on a weekend during a movie geared towards adults.

There's a difference between being a human and being "like" a human, IMO.
I would love to know how many people have a placesetting at the dining table for their pet.
**disclaimer: we were done with dinner & clearing the table & I looked over and she was sitting in the chair waiting for scraps. I thought it was funny so I took the picture.

For the record, my son would have had the food splattered all over the dining room before I would have had a chance to get a camera.
That is an awesome pic Kara.

Re: little dogs vs. small children
I don't compare my cats to children in any way. I don't think they should go to stores with me or I should have big birthday parties with them and presents and all. But I do absolutely love my cats and would risk my life to rescue them. I treat them like they are children and worry about them often. I can't say that I love them as much as a mother loves their child because I don't have children, and I'm certainly not in the position to compare the two. But I can say, that I do love them as if they were my children, within the context that I don't have children and don't know what that love really is.

i do that all the time. i dont think there is anything wrong with it - i am not comparing my dog to your child. . .i am just sharing a similar experience. . .i hope that i am not offending anyone when i do that.
Actually, I JUST did this a few moments ago. My coworker's daughter just got over a stomach virus and I was explaining how my dog was throwing up all night and how upsetting it was. She did not seen to mind that I brought it up!

Re: little dogs vs. small children
I have a child and two dogs. I have to say that I dont think my dogs and DD are not equal by any means. I do not bring my dogs to stores (only pet stores where they are allowed).
I love my DD to pieces, but I also love my dogs to pieces also. My DD will always come first in my eyes. But I will say that the love i have for my Furbabies is extreme. They brighten up my day and they keep me warm at night snuggled up in our bed.
ETA: I cant believe how many posts there has been about this. Maybe we should just let this topic die. I think we all know where we all stand regarding pets in stores and pets vs. kids.

Re: little dogs vs. small children
I don't think there is a comparison.
Dogs of all sizes are great companion. My little dogs "used" to be my babies and they still are but in a different way. But I admit that I have to say I have to use the word "used to". That after I had a "real" baby.
Now, that I have a baby, I feel that my dog are really pets and no longer "babies". I do love them but they are not human.
I do understand the feeling of companionship pets provide to their "owners". They can really become a member of a family but I think there are still animals and that we need to remember that concept.

Re: little dogs vs. small children
i think taking care of a dog is ALMOST like taking care of a child. it isn't the same and I love my dogs just like I *THINK* (i don't have children) i'll love my kids. My life DOES revolve around them but having 2 dogs, it happens. I have to wake up, take them outside, feed them, take a walk/run with each one (they need to run seperately because one's alot bigger than the other and it's difficult to handle at the same time/ones faster than the other) get ready for work, go to work (it was normally a 12 hour day), take a break, take them outside, play with them, go back to work, get home from work, let them outside, feed them, take them for another run, sleep, repeat.
I have to take them to the vets, buy them food, buy them toys, etc. it's a REAL responsible having a dog especially times 2. I think that's where people take it to, it's like loving your own child. you spend so much time with your "furbaby" that you do get close and bond with your dogs, or cats or any animal for that matter. dogs are just more dependent than any other animal. I do love my dogs so much. they hold a special place in my heart. they make me happy when I'm sad, they make me even more happy, when I'm already happy.
As far as people that dress up their dogs for the hell of it, I think they're bored. I don't think they get attention from anyone so they try to give their dogs the attention they want. Or they're just mental. Yes, I do buy my dogs t-shirts for certain occassions cause it would make a cute picture, but I buy functional tshirts and jackets for them since they're short haired dogs and they dog get cold quicker than other fur coats.
ok this is longer than i expected and i sure hope this doesnt get pulled.

You would mind because I was sharing a similar experience? It would offend you bc I was talking about a pet that I loved instead of a child? I don't really understand that.

Uh.. no!
I had 2 puppies. While they prepare you for parenthood they really are NOTHING compared to waking up every 2-3 hours. Over and over for weeks. Waiting for your DH to come home so you can take a shower. You will change diapers for a few years. No... it's not the same.

I would risk my life to save my child. I don't feel the same way about any pet I've ever had.
this I don't agree with. I guess it depends on the situation.. My dog O'Malley means the absolute world to me. Words cannot express how much I love him. I rescued him from SPCA in Florida where he's been in and out of shelters coming from Hurricane Katrina in Alabama. He's had a hard life and I really do believe that dogs that you rescue, have more respect and have more of an appreciation for you than dogs you buy but that's a whole other issue.
well anyway since he was in katrina i've thought about this. If I lived there and they said, go on this helicopter and be safe or stay here with your dogs.. I would stay with my dogs. they are living beings. they depend on me. they love me. how am i gonna just leave them? no way in hell. i guess maybe i'm crazy, but they are my "children" i take them care of them. therefore they are a part of me, they are mine.

You're stranded on a deserted island. It's you, small child, small dog, nothing else...who do you eat first?
End of discussion...
Sorry, but I would die before I would eat my dogs...there is no way.
I don't have children, I hope to someday. I'm not saying my dogs are exactly like my children, but having my dogs has emotionally saved me during some difficult points in my life. Eating them is out of the question.

You know, I always said this before I had DD. We have a high-maintenance Yorkie and I always said he prepared me for parenthood.....WRONG. Seriously....as much time and effort as I spent with my Yorkie he in NO WAY compares to the responsibility of a child....seriously, not even close.

Kimmie, I think I understand this. But I really think it is a totally different level and you will see that when you have children. I mean RIGHT NOW you would be willing to risk your life for your dog.. but it will likely be different when you have a baby.
I mean - it's one thing to choose that YOU will stay with your dog - but if you have a child, would you have your child stay with you and the dog and risk that babies life? Would you send your child to safety and put that child in jeopardy of being an orphan for the sake of your dog? Know what I mean?
