I hate these threads. Why must it always turn into a competition? And honestly, just because society feels a certain way about pets or children, I don't think that should dictate how I feel. Society gives no rights to farm animals - does that make factory farming morally right? Society also gives little rights to the environment, does that make drilling for oil and destroying animal habitats right?
You are so right, great post!.
We each feel different things in different circumstances and are entitled to feel what we do.
Bottom line. No one can tell anyone their dog isn't the same as a human if they feel the dog is just as important as a human to them.
Some people prefer dogs/animals to humans and that is their right/preference.
I think the OP was trying to understand WHY...
Then the OP would need to accept it at face value when people say they feel that way, not dispute or challenge it.
If you are someone who doesn't feel that way, all the posts in the world and you won't be able to understand. If you are not in someone else's shoes, it is rather hard to understand why someone else feels the way they do.
wrong wrong wrong wrong wrong wrong wrong wrong wrong wrong wrong.
for the UMPTEENTH time...it has NOTHING to do about HOW ANYONE FEELS about their pet vs. child.
it has to do with the idea that b/c YOU love YOUR pet "like" someone loves a child, YOU feel YOU should be able to take YOUR pet into a HUMAN situation b/c YOUR pet is *something compared to a small child* and I am baffled by THAT idea.
I will AGAIN say that I have had pets that I have LOVED. I have cried FEROCIOUSLY when they have passed. I love animals...HATE to see them mistreated and have called owners out when I have seen something that *I* felt was abusive...
this has nothing to do with how *I* think YOU feel...or the capacity for YOUR love of YOUR animal.
I can accept things at face value quiet readily when they are the true response to my actual question. anything else just irks my nerve.

but to equate them to being like (or even better than) a child in the context of the greater world...and in human situations...is just baffling to me still.
and that is all.
My post was in reponse to the above statement and I suspect TheLorax's was too.
You can't understand that someone would feel their pet is their child (and their desire to take their pet to places humans may go).
And my point still remains, you can't understand b/c you aren't those people, you aren't in their shoes and you likely never will understand.
Posted by Ophelia it has to do with the idea that b/c YOU love YOUR pet "like" someone loves a child, YOU feel YOU should be able to take YOUR pet into a HUMAN situation b/c YOUR pet is *something compared to a small child* and I am baffled by THAT idea..
So my point is exactly in reference to your statements.
Here is where it lies and why everyone feels differently. We each feel varying degrees of love for our pets. Some people's love is based on the concept of "It's an animal". And some people'e love goes beyond "It's an animal" and those are the people that would like to take their pet into everyday situations (work, a store, restaurant), etc.
So if you can't understand wanting to take your dog to human situations, then no one can convince you.
If I could I would take my dog to the freaking movies with me or a restaurant (outdoor cafe let's say, nice day, sun is shining and I want to spend time w/ my dog). But I respect the rules and laws. As I have said repeatedly, I have no tolerance for ANYONE who doesn't respect the laws...animal related, child related, etc.

I REALLY offended someone at the gym when I expressed my opinion after she said she was told that her love for her dog is the equivalent to a mother's love for her child, so for now, I'm going to keep my comments to myself
if you dont have a child but you have a dog.... it very well CAN be.

You're stranded on a deserted island. It's you, small child, small dog, nothing else...who do you eat first?
End of discussion...

I am in no way saying you cannot love a pet. but IMO...there is NO comparison to a human child and an animal in terms of their place in society.
.
exactly, thats YOUR OPINION. nothing more.

Re: little dogs vs. small children
here is my opinion, I have no children, so right now obviously my dog is most important, i love him like a baby, but of course when i do have a child the dog would come second to the child. So for people who choose not to have children why cant they love their pets as if its their child? and to some people having a kid isnt the most impt thing in the world maybe their pet is, to each is own

Re: little dogs vs. small children
I love my dogs to pieces and consider them to be a part of my family but I do not consider them my "children." They don't go with us anywhere other than dog parks, Petco, and the occasional car ride.
However, I do feel that people need to speak up for those that cannot defend themselves (namely, children and animals) but that is a whole other issue.
