Re: Maddie had a bad allergic reaction...
Ladies- thank you so much, from the bottom of my heart. You are all such a wonderful source of comfort and support.
To those who were insulted or shocked by my sister's (carolinep24) post- please know that she meant absolutely no harm.
When I spoke to her on the phone earlier, I'm the one who referenced Sloth from The Goonies to describe how awful DD looked. Knowing how stressed I get, she posted that to provide some levity for me (which it did). Again, I know my sister- she wasn't making light of children's allergies....

It IS very scary to witness a reaction like that. That's exactly how Emily reacted with milk as an infant She is severely allergic.
They say a secondary reaction could occur but I think it's rare. I'd just watch her closely and if you want, just give her another dose of the benedryl when the time passes and it's safe.
FYI - you can buy children's benedryl and ask your dr for the correct dosage (either half or full teaspoon).
You may also want to meet with an allergist to officially diagnose an allergy or rule it out if in fact it was from another reason.
Alot of times they just grow out of the allergy. Especially if you don;t *test* it...My son had a bad reaction any time we gave him milk, cheese.. even the processed cr@p in goldfish & cheez its.. It lasted until he was about 4...
he's completely fine now...
I don't see testing for the allergy to have any correllation to outgrowing the allergy.
When my son had something like this, the doctor said it was unnecessary to see an allergist and that most children outgrow it.

Re: Maddie had a bad allergic reaction...
is this supposed to be funny? Maybe it's a joke between you girls, but I don't think food allergies and their reactions is anything to laugh about. I hope you never see your infant's face swell so bad he/she is hardly recognizeable.
Actually I have.. And I've seen my own face swell to sloth-like proportions
But I meant no harm.. I was only trying to make my sister chuckle a little as I know how stressed she was. Sorry if you took offense.

Re: Maddie had a bad allergic reaction...
I'm soooo sorry you had to experience that Thankfully she's ok.
At 5 weeks we found out DD had a milk allergy. At 10 months DD had a RAST (blood) test for milk, soy, nuts and wheat. She only tested positive for milk. I have never seen an allergist.
My ped gave me some reading materials (how to read labels, what are all the different names for milk, etc.) & told me to buy Benadryl. He explained to me most children outgrow it between 3 - 5 years old.
We started to do milk challenges in his office at 15 months. She failed We'll try again in a few months.

Re: Maddie had a bad allergic reaction...
OH man that is scary!! I have to say though something is totally up with Yo baby and Danimals. DS never had an issue with milk but if I gave him Yo Baby or especially Danimals he would get sick and throw-up...then when he was about 15 months old I found out he actually was milk intolerant since he started to get rashed and stomach aches from cheese....but those were the ones that started the whole mess (not that he would not have been intolerant but those seemed to kick in more strongly than anything else!) I hope DD feels better soon!

Awww poor baby
One of the Mom's on here (can't remember which one) suggested having Benadryl in your diaper bag and in your house just in case which is a great idea. Glad your DD is OK
