If we lived up here still, I wouldn't think of it. I think just because we don't get to see them often. Maybe I'll just invite them all to come towards the end.
We are doing this for the exact same reason.
We live upstate now and won't be able to travel home for the holidays. DH will be at the shower as well as my dad, FIL and one or two uncles from out of state. We're making it more like a party and less of a "shower".

i think it's completely up to you, and if you want it, it's 100% fine. I had my FH and dad come back at cake time and for presents. FH opened the presents with me. My parent's friend also came at that time. (His wife was at the shower, and he went with my dad and FH to a bar during the shower and came back with them.)
