Lucky! What district are you in? Our district and all the others neighboring us backpedaled. We got a call from our superintendent last night saying that the NYS DOE is forcing them to continue requiring masks. My son cried until he finally went to sleep. I debated keeping him home today, but he still went. I saw that Sachem, Massapequa and Pat-Med held emergency meetings and decided to go against the state. I'm mad our district isn't willing to do that.

Mine wore hers on the bus and I told her she could take it off at school. I'm curious to see what she says when she comes home- I wonder if it will be a peer pressure thing where nobody takes it off unless others do. Judging by what the moms on my school facebook page were saying last night and today though, I think most kids will be taking them off. My daughter told me that she is most happy about being able to breathe in gym class. Sad, actually to hear this from a child
Mine just said not all unmasked and the double masked teacher went down to 1 mask. One classroom was like 90 degrees and my kid said they would have passed out if they had to wear a mask today.

If these 3 can stay with this, parents need to fight at their own schools for them to do the same.

It seems pretty clear that vaccinated people are safe to be maskless anywhere. Personally, I feel really secure being vaccinated, and I hate masks, so I'm good.
But it's so easy to understand why so many others still mask. An ethical unvaccinated person will follow whatever guidelines are applicable wherever they are. Especially if they are around vulnerable kids and health-compromised people.
There are also those mentally affected by the trauma of the past year for whom the thought of getting sick right now, even with something mild, and having to get checked is so stressful that mask wearing is still worth it. This group doesn't include me, but I totally have empathy. Live and let live.
So many other possibilities. If I felt that I was coming down with the slightest illness and I had to go out, I would wear a mask to protect others. Not a big sacrifice. It just doesn't seem worthy of so much scrutiny. I see masked people all the time & can't imagine thinking twice.
DH and I (and really most of our friends & family) are vaccinated. I still wear a mask in stores most of the time because I do have emotional/mental trauma from all of this. I started to feel more comfortable a few weeks ago and then my 39 year old husband had a stroke. Not to say that it has anything to do with Covid or masks or anything like that. But, emotionally/mentally, it F&*(ked me up again. So, we're back to being a little more cautious. He has to have a heart procedure this week (as they think he has an undetected issue that caused the stroke) and I'm sure we'll enjoy fresh air privately, but will definitely be more cautious out and about. We will not double mask (never did) or wear gloves (never did), but we will be more cautious about where we are & who we are around maskless. You can never know WHY people choose to do the things they do, but you don't need to judge them- you have no idea what they are going through. Id' rather wear a mask and be ridiculed and still have my husband.
I'm so sorry about your DH, that's so scary. I hope that he has a full recovery and is ok.
Wishing you and your husband the absolute best going forward.

Exactly! The Board works for you. Our Board decided to have a pair of balls and stand up to the DOE for the sack of the children. Everyone needs to clamor for the same. It's complete and utter bullshitt at this point

Masks encouraged but not required in NY schools
NEWS NYS schools will no longer be mandated to require that students wear masks outdoors.
The individual decisions will be up to local school districts
When New York's vaccination rate hits 70%, 'virtually all restrictions' will be relaxed, Gov. Cuomo says. It's currently at 68.6%

Just saw this. Bribery again and it should be outside AND inside.

It is. Suffolk’s number was 0.3 yesterday and there has been no spikes since the mandate was lifted over 2 weeks ago. If it was spreading, all these places packed with unmasked people would definitely do it.

Why is it so hard to believe there still a good amount of people wearing masks, double masks, and even gloves?!? I’ve seen a few this past weekend btw. It’s almost as if they don’t see it then it must be a lie. Supper odd!
Regarding to schools still making these poor kids wearing masks in hot weather is so despicable IMO. Good for PatMed, Sachem, Massapequa, and I believe there’s another district doing the same but can’t remember. As for the rest of the districts, they need to grow a pair because they obviously do not have children as their priority.
For once in my life I'm proud of my district for standing up for the kids.
I love when I heard that one board member say on the zoom last night- Let them slap our hands tomorrow then, we're going with the direction of the state from Friday... masks are optional tomorrow.
That should be the new, trendy, viral (no pun intended lol!) hashtag...#LetThemSlapOurHandsTomorrowThen #MamaBear

I’m sorry to hear that happened to ur DH. Sending lots of healing prayers ur way!
If wearing a mask makes u feel better when dealing with last year’s trauma and u also do it to proactively protect ur hubby, go right ahead mama. More kudos to u. At the same time if someone else decides not to wear a mask for whatever reason, that should be ok too. We can’t force everyone to do what we think it’s best, that’s the reason why mandates don’t work and they’re not fair. We all have different reasons for doing the things we do and we all should be able to have a say on what’s best for us.

Newsday just has breaking news. Cuomo said nope. School are required to have indoor masks because the CDC will not change any guidance for a few weeks and that the districts that said that they are now optional could now be put in violation of state policy. I just can’t wait for this school year to be done.

Because they didn’t listen to him and they dared to listen to kids and their parents?? Incredible! Such a disgusting abuse of power! Total disregard that the person writing this letter is the commissioner of the department of health for the state and he’s a doctor.

Yup he hates letting anyone make choices for their own family while only 23 people out of 1.4 million in Suffolk County was positive on Saturday. It is sickening what he is doing while other states are allowing their kids to enjoy their school year.

It is obvious too. Numbers are dropping and he still wants these kids in masks. I am so glad I am done this year as I feel bad for what will happen in September. If he can hold on to his power, he will have kids still wearing them next year.

Re: Masks encouraged but not required in NY schools
I'm going to honest, at this point with a mere 2-3 weeks of school left who gives a $hit if the kids have to wear masks??? There is so much outrage over something the kids have been doing already for TEN months even back in September when it was hot. How can anyone put this much energy and anger into something so insignificant in the grand scheme of things. Some people need a little perspective. Forty pages complaining about something we've all managed to do for a year, a few more weeks won't kill anyone.
Write off this school year, it's done. Kids are resilient and far less intolerant than their parents, they will survive another few weeks. Look ahead to the fall when no doubt life and school will be 100% back on track.
I hate the masks, my kids hate the masks but I'm not going to lose sleep over what's going on in the schools with just days left. Everyone needs to relax, get through the last few weeks, enjoy their summers and then by September they'll be nothing to stress about. The amount of energy some people are putting into this argument is mind boggling, make whatever choice you want regarding masks now that the mandate has been lifted and just move on. The schools will catch up whether now or later and all will be fine. Imagine what could be accomplished in the world if people put this much energy into issues that actually matter! Good grief.

Well since my kid came home today and was so happy about not wearing a mask in a 90 degree room, I care. There is no September new year for some kids and this was great news.
To many this matters and I get you won’t understand as it is a different view of how you feel.
I also know you don’t have a choice in NJ so this doesn’t affect you at all. People in NY are just tired of all of this. It is not science anymore, it’s all power.
How about Coumo sit in a mask for 6 hours in hot rooms and then maybe this would be lifted. He has absolutely no clue. He didn’t even wear a mask at the height of this pandemic. That should be a clue what is going on.
THIS issue DOES matter to many and we have the right to put our energy into it, no matter how you or anyone feels.
