It seems pretty clear that vaccinated people are safe to be maskless anywhere. Personally, I feel really secure being vaccinated, and I hate masks, so I'm good.
But it's so easy to understand why so many others still mask. An ethical unvaccinated person will follow whatever guidelines are applicable wherever they are. Especially if they are around vulnerable kids and health-compromised people.
There are also those mentally affected by the trauma of the past year for whom the thought of getting sick right now, even with something mild, and having to get checked is so stressful that mask wearing is still worth it. This group doesn't include me, but I totally have empathy. Live and let live.
So many other possibilities. If I felt that I was coming down with the slightest illness and I had to go out, I would wear a mask to protect others. Not a big sacrifice. It just doesn't seem worthy of so much scrutiny. I see masked people all the time & can't imagine thinking twice.
DH and I (and really most of our friends & family) are vaccinated. I still wear a mask in stores most of the time because I do have emotional/mental trauma from all of this. I started to feel more comfortable a few weeks ago and then my 39 year old husband had a stroke. Not to say that it has anything to do with Covid or masks or anything like that. But, emotionally/mentally, it F&*(ked me up again. So, we're back to being a little more cautious. He has to have a heart procedure this week (as they think he has an undetected issue that caused the stroke) and I'm sure we'll enjoy fresh air privately, but will definitely be more cautious out and about. We will not double mask (never did) or wear gloves (never did), but we will be more cautious about where we are & who we are around maskless. You can never know WHY people choose to do the things they do, but you don't need to judge them- you have no idea what they are going through. Id' rather wear a mask and be ridiculed and still have my husband.
Can I ask if they attribute the stroke to the vaccine? I only ask as a nurse friend said she is seeing younger people, especially that age in the hospital with stokes right after being vaccinated.

The state never should have announced anything on Friday. They caused chaos and confusion, as usual. Everyone expected masks through the last day of school, they should have just left it alone. I feel bad for the children who got a taste of going without a mask today and now tomorrow the mask is back.
Teachers should teach outside. The emperor said kids don’t need masks outside.
Easier said than done. I have anywhere from 8-20 students on Zoom and the wifi is only available right outside the building. I actually cut one of my classes short today due to this and let in person students have a 20 minute mask break outside.

Ugghhh, I thought that would be a win win for the kids.

I'm going to honest, at this point with a mere 2-3 weeks of school left who gives a $hit if the kids have to wear masks??? There is so much outrage over something the kids have been doing already for TEN months even back in September when it was hot. How can anyone put this much energy and anger into something so insignificant in the grand scheme of things. Some people need a little perspective. Forty pages complaining about something we've all managed to do for a year, a few more weeks won't kill anyone.
Write off this school year, it's done. Kids are resilient and far less intolerant than their parents, they will survive another few weeks. Look ahead to the fall when no doubt life and school will be 100% back on track.
I hate the masks, my kids hate the masks but I'm not going to lose sleep over what's going on in the schools with just days left. Everyone needs to relax, get through the last few weeks, enjoy their summers and then by September they'll be nothing to stress about. The amount of energy some people are putting into this argument is mind boggling, make whatever choice you want regarding masks now that the mandate has been lifted and just move on. The schools will catch up whether now or later and all will be fine. Imagine what could be accomplished in the world if people put this much energy into issues that actually matter! Good grief.
Well since my kid came home today and was so happy about not wearing a mask in a 90 degree room, I care. There is no September new year for some kids and this was great news.
To many this matters and I get you won’t understand as it is a different view of how you feel.
I also know you don’t have a choice in NJ so this doesn’t affect you at all. People in NY are just tired of all of this. It is not science anymore, it’s all power.
How about Coumo sit in a mask for 6 hours in hot rooms and then maybe this would be lifted. He has absolutely no clue. He didn’t even wear a mask at the height of this pandemic. That should be a clue what is going on.
THIS issue DOES matter to many and we have the right to put our energy into it, no matter how you or anyone feels.
Blah Blah Blah
You're a broken record. It's June, not worth getting twisted over. The year is basically over.
I am not sure where you live except that it's a rural area in NJ, but the temps on LI this past week have been unbearable. If you told me you worked as a teacher and that you are completely fine wearing a mask for 7+ hours a day in a non air conditioned room with poor ventilation, then perhaps I would consider it more appropriate for you to voice your opinion. But since it seems you probably spend most of your day mask free, lounging around your house, is it possible that you can't relate to the people that work or attend schools right now having to wear a mask all day? Some of the kids who weren't previously struggling have started struggling in the past week or two because it is now so uncomfortably hot. No one is asking you to join the fight to get our kids mask free, sh*t I am not even fighting this fight because frankly I think it's a waste of time, but why can't you just take a moment to see the other side and see why someone might want to fight this fight? Just like no one on that side gives two sh*ts if you double mask to go out for a jog, why do you care if someone wants to get upset and fight this fight? For once in your life just shut up!!!!

Re: Masks encouraged but not required in NY schools
No one allowed to be maskless inside NY schools. Absolutely ridiculous as Covid is only hanging out inside and not outside the school. Good luck for September everyone as I can see him not lifting this in 3 months.

Since your comments on here are generally ignorant, misinformed and stupid AF I suggest taking your own advice and maybe for once, just STFU. Your juvenile diatribes about me and all of the things you *think* you know about my life is getting old. You sound like a child. Grow up.
Ha! That's funny, sweetheart. Can you please let me know what I am ignorant, misinformed or stupid AF about?
Sure thing. Every time you open your mouth.
Yup, as I expected you can't find even one example. Maybe if WW taught you how to use the search feature you'd have more success.

I just hope everyone screaming "take the masks off the kids " is teaching their kids to respect those kids who are keeping it on.
This is so important and I hope parents remind their children that you never know someone’s circumstances and to be understanding and kind to any children still wearing masks.
Those kids could be dealing with a sick grownup in their home and the last thing they need is another kid teasing them. Whatever anyone thinks of masks, please, please remind your kids to be kind. I have seen so many young children watch their moms and dads die of cancer and I tear up thinking how horrible it would be to add bullies to their already tough little worlds. Please make sure your kids are better than that.

Masks encouraged but not required in NY schools
I’m a little confused as to the difference between the announcement on Friday vs Cuomo Monday. Didn’t Fridays come from NYS as well? Did Cuomo’s office have anything to do with Fridays announcement? Thanks for any clarification

Agreed. Yesterday a mom wrote on our PTA FB group that it is so sad that some kids will continue to wear masks outside even though they don’t have to. Maybe some children are immunocompromised or they live with someone who is. Or maybe they are like my kid who literally forgets he has a mask on even in 90 degree heat and keeps it on even though I told him he could take it off.

Has anyone heard of kids bullying other kids over mask wearing? In a million years my kids would never care if someone was wearing a mask, let alone say something about it. I think this is a bigger issue things of teaching your kid not to be an a** hole. Unfortunately if the kid is already making fun of someone for wearing a mask, it's probably a little too late.

I doubt it, although you will get “stories” of this happening. Honestly, teach your kids to be nice and not bullies. That has nothing to do with masks. Many kids have a story and had one way before the pandemic and masks. You never know and should always be caring and nice. This way of thinking should have been taught for generations not just because some kids will be wearing masks and others won’t be.
I feel like this logic is reaching like the diabetic eating a banana at the market.

Yes - the NYDOH said they planned on removing masks and contacted the CDC - they didn't hear from the CDC over the weekend but on Monday, the CDC said they weren't planning on issuing any guidance on removing masks in schools for a couple of weeks.
I think it was horrible for the state to leak this with uncertainty - usually things like this are only told when there is thought it will be approved.
I seriously think it was a publicity stunt to take some of the spotlight off of Cuomo's daughter who announced she was queer. There was nothing wrong with her announcement - and really who should care, but, I don't think her dad liked the level of attention it was getting.

Funny you should ask- it is the first place my mind went to. I am very pro-vaccine. My DH is in healthcare and got his vaccines in January/February. The Dr said it's not related for him to have a stroke 5 months later. He actually has a heart issue we never knew about (it's common) and it's known to cause the type of stroke he had in some people. It's called a PFO- a hole between the chambers in the heart-the plan is to close the hole and that should actually correct the issue.

It’s funny that was the first thing you thought of but Hofstra rudely dismissed Windy for asking a legit question
I’m glad your DH is ok and although sad he had a stroke, the blessing in disguise is that it lead to discovering his heart issue. I agree and see why you would continue to take precautions. Not only to prevent him from getting Covid but you also wouldn’t want him to get sick and delay his procedure.
I hope everything goes well and your DH gets better soon.

actually some kid in my son's third grade class made a rude comment about my son having his shield up- I attribute it to his parents spewing crap at home... sad to think of what else this kid hears at home that I am sure he will regurgitate at some point in school

Right - so reminding people to teach their kids not to bully about masks is kind of pointless. If the parents are ass holes the kids will be ass holes. this isn't just a mask issue - it's a life issue.

Exactly and just from this board, I can see some of their kids being bullies as they learn it from their parents.
