Moms of GERD babies.. zantac question.
Liam has just been diagnosed with GERD at 6 months. He never had any issues before but, this weekend he turned into a monster and the poor little guy is in sooo much pain. SO the doctor started him on Zantac.
My question is.. How long did it take for the Zantac to make a difference? He just had his third dose. (2nd day) I was kind of led to believe that it would work right away. But, as the day goes on, he gets worse and worse. He arches his back and screams when I try to nurse him. By bedtime last night he refused to nurse and needed us to walk with him for hours before he finally gave into sleep.
The doctor said we shouldn't need to give the infant dose of Malox but, it's the only thing that's helping him be comfortable right now. So I am still giving it to him when he gets bad. Also, since he is refusing to eat before bed, if he wakes up in the middle of the night to eat, I'm letting him. (We just got him off the middle of the night feeding about a month ago so I am sure we will have to Ferberize him again when he is feeling better)
Poor baby. I can't stand to see him like this. I just hope he gets better soon.

Re: Moms of GERD babies.. zantac question.
Zantac never worked for us and in fact I think its an inferior medication for reflux.
All Zantac is, is an acid neutralizer so the baby still continues to reflux but it doesn't burn as much. Maalox is the same thing, an acid neutralizer
See if you can get him on prevacid which is an acid inhibitor and PREVENTS the reflux from occurring....
36 hours after being on the Prevacid I had a new baby

THanks so much. This is just awful. I think I will give it one more night and then call the doctor and mention Prevacid. Another question.. Can a virus/cold/cough cause the GERD flare up? DS was soo sick at the end of last week. Fever, white spots on his throat, cough, congestion and then out of nowhere he has GERD. I have noticed him spitting up more in the past month or so but, none of this screaming in pain.

Re: Moms of GERD babies.. zantac question.
So far Zantac is not working for us DD has been on it about a month now.
Yes Congestion can cause Reflux...when a baby is congested they gasp more when feeding and if there was underlining reflux to begin with, this could cause it to act up...

Hmmmmmm......
Here is what I think... usually babies are diagnosed with GERD early on... its not USUALLY something that develops later on. They are born with either a dairy intolerance which produces the refluxing or the structurally immature sphincter muscle which causes food and acid to come back up.
Some babies spit up and go on with the day... they gain weight fine, don't scream in pain and the spitting up seams to have no affect on them. Usually they eat a little too much and that food comes back up.
The fact that he has been fine all along and just NOW, after having been sick with what sounds like strep throat (Classic white spots on the throat which are blisters filled with pus) and coughing congestion would lead ME to think that this MAY not be reflux but be caused by the cold.
Since he had all this mucous being produced he probably had some crazy post nasal drip which will actually cause them to vomit...... every time he vomits with these sores on the back of his throat and the acid hits it it burns and hurts bad... hence the screaming.
So while he is mimicking symptoms or reflux right now, I would think that once the congestion and post nasal drip goes away and his throat heals he should be back to normal.
So.. do you treat this so called, "reflux" for the moment? I would keep giving him the maalox which is coating his throat and neutralizing the acid every time he vomits to keep his throat from burning more....
Hopefully in a few days he'll be all better....
This is just a theory, since you said he was fine until recently sick. Could he have developed reflux in teh last few weeks and this is totally coincidental... sure...... but thats not so common.
I'd give it a few days and if he is still uncomfortable call the ped. I'd have him brought in to check his throat and ears again and request a medication change and follow up by requesting an appointment with a GI specialist.
I'm a firm believer that if you child has reflux they really need to be followed by a GI specialist. While peds are good they have a very BASIC knowledge of pediatric GI issues. I love my ped and she is excellent but a few times she tried to make changes to Alexa's GI medications and when I mentioned them to the GI specialist (I never changed it) she said the ped was wrong....
so those are my 2 cents ......
FM me if you want to chat more!

Are you followed by a GI specialist? I'm sorry I can't remember if she was a pre-mature or full term. Premies have a huge predisposition to reflux cause by an inmaturity of the spincter. She most likely needs to be put on Prevacid.
I'd take her to a GI specialist.
