Moms of girls...."self-discovery" at 14 months or reason to be concerned?
every once in awhile the past few weeks/months Aly will touch herself "down there"....totally fleeting...usually in the bath.
Well while I was gone, DH said she did it in the bath, while he changed her, and even in the carseat while driving a 10 minute drive and making a "whining, complaining" sound. He said it's been red and he used Balmex which made it a bit better.
Should I be concerned? Should I change her more often to see if that helps and keep putting Balmex in that area?
Is it her just discovering her body parts?

I'm not sure. DD does this every now and then and of course I have to move her hand away because it's always when she has a poop and I haven't wiped her yet. I'm sure self discovery is normal but the whining might worry me. I wonder if she could have a UTI or a yeast infection. Maybe she's itchy and that's why she grabbing down there more often?

that's what I was thinking. I am going to give her yogurt today and change her frequently and look for signs of a yeast infection

If she's complaining, there's something going on. But the self discovery thing is normal. Embarrassing but normal I catch my little girl every once in awhile and I have to remind her to go in her room

my dd does this sometimes in the bath....DH gets freaked but I just laugh
My dd does have ezcema though which can sometimes irritate the area, so I watch she doesn't go nuts to make the area worse and I put aquaphor on to make it feel better.
Does your dd have ezcema or anything like that?

not diagnosed. We have forced air heat, so it's very dry and she gets lathered with lotion every night and morning, but not down there. Her legs tend to be very dry and bumpy.

Would it be a sign of something wrong if she is tensing up when I wipe her with the baby wipe?

Not sure. Miranda does that too. But she'll do it for one change and not the other so I'll usually chalk it up to the cold wipe or just not wanting to be changed. If she does it consistently there could be something going on. Maybe it's worth a call to the ped. just to see what they think.

Might be. Grace had a yeast infection (not the same for babies as it is for adults) and needed a special cream for the rash. She got it from antibiotics once.

Re: Moms of girls...."self-discovery" at 14 months or reason to be concerned?
I think this may be the sign of something hurting, IMO - especially the tensing up - especially if you are just noticing it now - also, from the redness, that may be a sign of something...
Uusally the self-discovery stuff will occur, but tends to really occur around potty training when there is so much more focus on those body parts, and a lot more easy access with undies....
Good luck!

It might be a yeast infection. If she is itchy since she doesn't really know what itchy feels like that might be why she is discovering herself. Honestly I would call the doctor and ask.

olivia does the same thing. when i change her and when she takes a bath. once in a while she will grab for her diaper and i will change her. i think its discovery for them and when they grab at the diaper i think the diaper needs a changing.
