I'd keep it and use it, but I don't have the same thoughts as you about organic foods.

The only jarred food I gave DD was Earth's Best and then I was inspired to make all of her food from a few ladies on this site.Chat Icon Chat Icon I would give it away. Don't even keep it for an "emergency." You 'll have tons of homemade food frozen for an "emergency" if one arises.

We did primarily organic - but once in a while would let him have non-organic. I think it's what you MOSTLY do that counts, more than ONLY do Chat Icon

If your supermarket sells it, they should take it back. My mom gave me some jars for Christmas before she knew I was going to make Nolan's food. I took them to Waldbaum's without a receipt and they gave me a store credit that I used for EB cereal.

Re: moms who are organic nuts....or moms who aren't but can understand my nuttiness...a WWYD?

I would keep it. Keep it for an emergency - you never know when it will come in handy. Or, donate it if you can.

I was very much into organic food until I saw the Penn and Teller show "Bullshyt" on Showtime. They devoted a whole episode to organic foods. If you haven't seen it, definitely worth renting on-demand or looking up online. It is an eye opener. You can also research the topic online.

In a nut shell, they expose a lot of the myths about the organic food industry. For example, organic farms still use pesticides on their crops, just not synthetic ones. And sometimes the more "natural" pesticides are more harmful than the synthetic ones. Also, many of the organic fruits/veggies that we buy are not local but imported from other countries. It's hard to determine if they are truly regulated in the same way. The episode goes much more into detail than this. These are just a few examples.

My point is you will not be harming your child by having him eat one jar of non-organic baby food. There are certain products that I try and buy organic, like meat, milk, eggs, soft-skinned fruits like strawberries, etc. But I am far more at ease about it after watching that show.

ETA: Just wanted to say I was very much an organic nut as well, and don't want to discourage anyone from buying or using organic products. But I am so much more laid-back about it now after reading some articles that debunk some of the organic myths. Here's a clip to the show episode too:

I made DS' food from all organic veggies. Gave organic only jar food.

DS now only eat non organic gerber graduate microwaveable food in the blue plastic trays.

I say keep a few jars for "just in case". Give the rest to someone else or exchange at the store.

Re: moms who are organic nuts....or moms who aren't but can understand my nuttiness...a WWYD?

I was doing organic, until I became severely unhappy with Earth's best food. I wound up using Gerber organic(which I didn't want to use), but I on occasion had to buy plain old Gerber for a certain variation or when the stores were out of some things. I loosened up b/c I had to. But if you feel uneasy about it, just donate it.Chat Icon

Honestly, I dont think anything would happen to him. Ive given Abby both organic and non organic. But if it means a lot to you, "get rid" of one jar at a time - by stashing it and giving it to someone else who is not organic. Could you get away with that?

So she meant well, but she didn't know you don't intend to feed DS this way. Just donate it to your local church. Do you feel guilty not using it? Anyway, whatever you do with it, you should really let your Aunt know about your intentions to feed DS all organic. In my family like it or not, they all know by now I'm a crazy organic nut who will be making all of DS's food. This way you won't be stuck with more jars in the future.

I'd give it to a friend or donate it.....I made the boys' food and used organic jarred food when I was out. Now and then I would give them tastes of whatever I was eating but they primarily always ate organic foods.

I commend you on sticking to your guns.

However, I have a problem with the suggestions to return it to a store for $$ -- you don't know where it was bought, and you didn't pay for it. I think people who are so conscious of their decisions with their DCs should also consider what is morally correct.....and returning something that you didn't buy for $$ that isn't yours in not, I M O , the right thing to do.

I would give it to a friend or donate to a food pantry. The Mother's Center I belong to always has formula and baby food out for anyone to take if they need it. My mother works at a food pantry at her church and they always need jarred baby food.

ITA with Kara. I can't believe people who say they wouldn't put the food into their child's body, but in the same breath have no problem returning it or adding it to a registry to get money back.....

I totally get that you don't want to give it to him, but I'd just donate or stash some in case of an emergency (throw one in your diaper bag or something....)Chat Icon

But it's ok for those who can't afford to purchase food, who rely on donations?? Chat Icon That's just discriminatory.

ETA: If you believe that returning a gift for $$ or store credit is immoral then I understand your point...but to me, the jarred food was a baby gift like any other. It seems that returning baby gifts is certainly more of the norm than the exception. BRU sells jarred food just like they sell diaper bags and swings...no biggie IMO.

Although I gotta say one thing-- how come on the Pregnancy board, everybody happily eats whatever they want and breaks every "rule" out there, always saying "EVERYTHING IN MODERATION"... even though you are just as directly responsible for your baby's nutrition at that point? And now it seems a lot of people would not use a single jar of non-organic food? I don't get it... does moderation only apply when it's your own craving you don't want to deny? Not trying to stir the pot here, I'm COMPLETELY guilty of this same behavior myself.

Thanks for posting this. You bring up a few good points. We try to eat local as well as organic. You can't always do it but we try. Secondly-the majority or organic farmers(not ALL but most) have much better animal welfare policies than the feedlot beef, chicken and pork sold as regular meat. That is another reason we choose organic. lastly we prefer grasfed beef over grain fed. Grain is should not be a main part of the cow's diet and makes them sick. This summer we will be buying meat directly from a farmer near us and it is not even labeled organic(because of very stringent laws about who can or cannot call food organic) I'm going to watch the video now

Personally, and I am not an organic food nut, I would feed it to him. It's perfectly good food and it's not like it's going to harm him. I find organic stuff CRAZY priced, when I can I give it to my DD I do, but more often than not she eats regular non-organic food and she is perfectly healthy. I wouldn't waste the food. Chat Icon

did you ever see MY posts on the pregnancy board? Chat Icon

I am a nut to a certain extent about MY food as well.

certain toxins don't pass through the placenta, certain ones do (mercury....I had NO TUNA or any other fish on that list my entire pregnancy) nor did I eat fast food or processed foods. but I don't eat like that anyway.

I want to thank everyone for their opinions. it's about 8-10 jars of food and I am going to donate them. I DO feel kinda badly, but mostly b/c I think my family would make fun of me Chat Icon if they knew that I was making my own organic food.

I have no idea where or when she bought them and returning them to the store is not something I am going to do. I don't feel comfortable doing that. so donation it is.

I'd also be glad to give it to anyone here. it's mostly stage 1 fruits and veggies...again it's Beechnut brand. although she DID give me also stage 2 stuff but I may have already given those to the church. I was holding the stage 1 to see what I would want to do.

thanks again!!!!

if i were trying to make baby organic- then i would take half a jar of the non-organic and mix it with organic stuff..... to make it organic....

Ummmm, i don't do the orgainc thing, but I'm pretty sure that totally defeats the purpose !!

If you're not comfortable feeding it to your son, and you have every right to make that decision - it's not 'nutty' - I'd donate it.
