I would keep it. Keep it for an emergency - you never know when it will come in handy. Or, donate it if you can.
I was very much into organic food until I saw the Penn and Teller show "Bullshyt" on Showtime. They devoted a whole episode to organic foods. If you haven't seen it, definitely worth renting on-demand or looking up online. It is an eye opener. You can also research the topic online.
In a nut shell, they expose a lot of the myths about the organic food industry. For example, organic farms still use pesticides on their crops, just not synthetic ones. And sometimes the more "natural" pesticides are more harmful than the synthetic ones. Also, many of the organic fruits/veggies that we buy are not local but imported from other countries. It's hard to determine if they are truly regulated in the same way. The episode goes much more into detail than this. These are just a few examples.
My point is you will not be harming your child by having him eat one jar of non-organic baby food. There are certain products that I try and buy organic, like meat, milk, eggs, soft-skinned fruits like strawberries, etc. But I am far more at ease about it after watching that show.
ETA: Just wanted to say I was very much an organic nut as well, and don't want to discourage anyone from buying or using organic products. But I am so much more laid-back about it now after reading some articles that debunk some of the organic myths. Here's a clip to the show episode too: [L=http://http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fhBKtjDtTVk]htt[://http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fhBKtjDtTVk[/L]
Thanks for posting this. You bring up a few good points. We try to eat local as well as organic. You can't always do it but we try. Secondly-the majority or organic farmers(not ALL but most) have much better animal welfare policies than the feedlot beef, chicken and pork sold as regular meat. That is another reason we choose organic. lastly we prefer grasfed beef over grain fed. Grain is should not be a main part of the cow's diet and makes them sick. This summer we will be buying meat directly from a farmer near us and it is not even labeled organic(because of very stringent laws about who can or cannot call food organic) I'm going to watch the video now
I agree with you DRMom, and I try to buy mostly organic meat and eggs for that reason. I know part of the organic movement is that the animals at least be treated humanely, with some compassion and fed differently. My vegetarian and vegan friends would probably like it if I eliminate meat altogether, but I find this to be a happy medium. What I found shocking personally was the commentary/articles on the organic fruits and veggies. I gave DS almost all organic food for the first year of his life, thinking it had better nutritional value and no pesticides. Now that I know better, I pick and choose what type of organic produce I buy.
