I totally see where you're coming from. That being said, at my company (I work for my dad at a 10-person company), if someone did that, I would wonder why they didn't create an ebates account for the office. The company is paying, so they should get any benefit/kickback. We're a small start-up, so any little bit matters.

I can get on board with that train of thought. The company is spending the money, so if any kickback is to be made, it should go to them.

ITA. I think it was inappropriate.

I guess there is something wrong with my moral compass. I look at it like you. I have had several positions where i was in charge of office supplies. Usually if you order a certain amount from Staples they give you a free gift. We were going to place the order anyway and I didnt spend extra just to get the gift. What is my firm going to do with perfumed sea salts?

Maybe I never worked the kind of job where my bosses would have had a problem with it.

I honestly thought the same thing.

Me too.

The problem IMO is that its not perfumed sea salt or some throw away type gift...the incentive was to receive money back which I do agree in most companies, you would be fired.

BUT, I knew from the getgo K's circumstances of working for her FIL so I wasnt really thinking that it was that morally wrong to put it on ebates as it was working for a family member and they didnt participate in ebates. If I worked for a family member I also might have though "big deal". Apparently it was for him which is why going fwd I would just open up a business ebates.

I would have NO problem with it. You're not costing the company anything, nor did ebates influence where you booked.

It's the same as when I'm laying out money for something for work, I will use my credit card that gets points and I am getting a kickback. By the same token, I use my Bn.com and amazon prime accounts to save the company money on shipping.

There are a lot of companies that give you credit cards for expenses and when you charge things YOU keep the points. It was one of the perks of DH's old job. He didn't pay that bill, yet he ended up with all of the points in his name. Similarly, when he traveled, he kept all of the frequent flier and hotel program points even though he didn't pay a dime. It was totally expected and anadvertosed perk.

Anyway, I don't see how going through ebates is ANY different than charging something for a company which you will be reimbursed for, and choosing to use a credit card that gets points instead of using your debit card for no points

I agree with this. I have a corporate CC for hotel and plane tickets, but all employees get the airline mileage credit (so we're "profiting" from that). All nominal purchases on a business trip are done on my personal CC, so when I get reimbursed, the company pays for it, but I get the CC points. This is all stated in our employee manual.

Yeah I dont think I would do that either Id actually be afraid that there would be consequences to that.

This. When I was working I always kept my personal things separate from work. I don't think it was right to "profit" off of work related business.

My old company made you book your travel yourself, on your own credit card, and get reimbursed. In that case, everyone could benefit from credit card points, miles, etc., so I don't see the difference between that and you using your eBates account.

This is exactly what I was thinking. If I use my CC to lay out certain expenses, I get cashback on every purchase. I'm not sure I see the difference.

Re: Moral Question - opinions welcome (eBates related)

I'm actually surprised that your FIL had a problem with that...first off, you told him. You could have said nothing, and no one would have known differently!

You receiving the ebates money had ZERO affect on the company. They still had the same rate, same deal as they signed up for. Sure, I guess an ebates account could have been created for them..but I don't think what you did was horribly wrong.

If my FIL was my boss i may have done the same thing. But if i were working for any other company, i would have asked before doing so.

Kind of off-topic, but Im suprised you dont have to make travel reservations through a corporate travel system. I dont think booking reservations through e-bates or any private travel booking service would insure the traveller through your company.

Many small companies do not have them-I'm thinking she may work at a smaller firm.

It's unethical. Any major corporation would fire you for that. As a general rule, if you have to think about if it is wrong or not, it usually is!

I honestly wouldn't have thought twice about it. If I could put the stuff i buy and expense for work through ebates, I totally would. As far as I know, we have no policy to the contrary, and I work for a huge company

Funny, I thought nothing of it. I didn't think it was a big deal and that's why I told him about it!

I see both sides, but I would never feel good about doing that.

In my office, one of the assistants makes all the lunch reservations through her personal opentable account, and I always thought she should make it through her boss's.

For those who say it is unethical...

How is it different than using a frequent flyer number or hotel number for work travel but using the benefits of free plane tickets and hotel stays for personal use?

Happens all the time in corporate america and not a violation of policy unless the company dictates otherwise.

Not sure if I would have done that, but given the size of the company and nature of what you did, i don't think its so bad. You didn't take something from them.

Yeah, I feel it's the same thing.

When I get printing done for work events, I totally put it through my own Staples rewards card. I don't do it very often, but I think the people who do a lot of printing are actually encouraged to do this.

I completely agree. I'd like to know how many of those who quickly said it was wrong have ever put a reimbursable expense on a personal card and kept the points/miles without being explicitly told explicitly that it was ok to keep them. Also, even if you got clearance to keep them, did you declare them as income?

Re: Moral Question - opinions welcome (eBates related)

You should have created an ebate account in the company name.

You don't not mix personal accounts with business accounts. Especially if not your company.

The rebate if any should have been in the benefit of the company. Not you!

You did it on company time with the company money. They rebate was not ours to have.

I don't think I would have done that. Just seems wrong to me.

You're not paying for the Hotel out of your pocket so why should you make a profit?

This is exactly what I was going to say. Unless you were paying for the hotel out of your pocket, you should not profit from the transaction. It's just wrong IMHO.

at my past job i would have totally done the same thing and thought nothing of it

however at my current company we are not allowed to take any gift or kick back from anyone - you get fired for it - so there is no way i would have done that knowing our policy.
