It's unethical. Any major corporation would fire you for that. As a general rule, if you have to think about if it is wrong or not, it usually is!
I honestly wouldn't have thought twice about it. If I could put the stuff i buy and expense for work through ebates, I totally would. As far as I know, we have no policy to the contrary, and I work for a huge company
whose credit card is being used? If it is yours, your money - your rewards. If it is the compay's CC - 100% the rewards belong to the company.

Re: Moral Question - opinions welcome (eBates related)
My husband travels for work all the time. He'll put $10,000 in expenses on our cc and then get reimbursed.
We get tons of CC points from this. Which I cash in.
I dont know what Ebates is, but It sounds like the same thing to me.

Funny, I thought nothing of it. I didn't think it was a big deal and that's why I told him about it!
you thought nothing of it bc you work for family. things are different in the real world and It's unethical

I think the BIG difference here, and with others who are saying they dont see the difference then using personal cc and being reinbursed but getting points - is that the travel WASNT EVEN FOR HER. She booked other peoples travel on (I'm assuming) company credit card (?) and is recieving the benefits.

This is a different situation. He is using his PERSONAL CC to advance the money. THEN he gets reimbursed by the company.
If he was using the COMPANY CC he would not get whatever rewards/benefits the CC would give.
Just like someone does not use their own AAA card to get discounts to book company business trips. Most companies have their own deal with hotels, rewards program, etc... And if they don't, so be it. That's their prerogatives.
The fact that your DH is using you personal CC gives you the right to use whatever CC reward your own CC gives you.

My DH booked all of the travel expenses etc on a company credit card in his name. He kept the rewards.
I buy and expense things all the time that get sent or distributed to other people (employees, clients, etc), not all are my own.
if the company has a travel dept and doesn't allow you to go outside it, that's one thing, but when any individual employee is booking the travel, all bets are off, IMO. My company has a travel dept but each time I have flown I've been told to book my own travel within reason. I've always chosen the airline where I get miles/points and used a CC to get more miles/points. If I could have done it through a dicount program, I would not have hesitated.

I don't think I would have done that. Just seems wrong to me.
You're not paying for the Hotel out of your pocket so why should you make a profit?
This is exactly what I was going to say. Unless you were paying for the hotel out of your pocket, you should not profit from the transaction. It's just wrong IMHO.
I agree

KEYWORD: Your OWN travel expenses.
You don't work at a company, book travels for others as part of your job and get rewards for your OWN personal use. That's the topic being discussed here.

I work at a huge corporation, and our policy is that we keep the mileage points, and we have to use our corporate CC to book the flights and hotels. I have several coworkers who have flown for free on long trips with their spouse, just on frequent flyer mileage earned through the company, on the company CC.

The "real world"? So, since she works for family, it's not a real job?
Sorry, this hits a nerve as I work for a family business and I hate when people act like I can do whatever I want.
ETA: I wouldn't think to use my Ebates account- but I don't think what you did was wrong. Now that you know your boss doesn't agree- it won't happen again. Problem solved!
That is a tough one though!

Yes .... The Company policy. Exactly!
And you are making the point that everyone has been making here. The points is used by those who travel. Some companies allow it. But then again, it's part of the compensation for travelling. Yet, again, it's used by those who did the travel themselves. It's not their secretary/person who booked the flight cashing in on the rewards. KWIM??

Kind of off-topic, but Im suprised you dont have to make travel reservations through a corporate travel system. I dont think booking reservations through e-bates or any private travel booking service would insure the traveller through your company.
When you're dealing in trade shows, especially the large ones, they provide a "housing bureau". ALL attendees in ANY capacity MUST block their rooms through the housing bureau, regardless of the size of the company.
The reason for this is the association hosting the trade show buys out ENTIRE hotels and gets them at a VERY discounted rate. So if you were to try and book a room in the same hotel online or through a travel system it would show sold out.
In response to the OP's question, I think your situation is a little different in that you work for a small family run company. If it was a large corporation, you wouldn't have that kind of leeway and would most likely get in trouble for using a "personal account" of some sort for a kickback.
Morally, however, I have ZERO issue with what you did. Big companies are just that, BIG. They're not going to go belly up from "losing" sixty six bucks they NEVER HAD to begin with.
But that's just me. My moral compass is definitely a tad skewed.

For those who say it is unethical...
How is it different than using a frequent flyer number or hotel number for work travel but using the benefits of free plane tickets and hotel stays for personal use?
Happens all the time in corporate america and not a violation of policy unless the company dictates otherwise.
This is what i was thinking - when I travel for work, usually international and business class, I bank those miles, my company does not. I probably wouldn't have done the ebate thing, but I don't see too much of a difference in the scenarios.
