My Dog was attacked by a dog
A pitbull. I am so sick right now I want to vomit. She has two deep punture wounds - one right above her left eye, the other near her ear. I brought her to the emergency vet and he said he couldn't stitch her because it was a dog bite and they have to make sure whatever might be in the open wound comes out. So she is oozing blood. They had to give her sedatives to calm her. I will never ever forget the sounds coming from her when the dog attacked her. There was absolutely no provocation whatsoever. I was walking my dog on a leash and the other dog came stealthly from his front yard. The owner was outside and I said is your dog okay? He said no and just stood there! The next thing the dog pounced on top of my dog. I was screaming! And there was another neighbor across the street he didn't even look up from waxing his car, not even after it was over to ask if everything was okay. What is wrong with people???? I know it could have been so much worse. I said to the owner if your dog is vicious it should be on a leash (they keep it in a crate in the garage - I hear it barking the few times I have passed their house) and all he said was "sorry".
I called the police and they went there to talk to the owner. When the officer came back she said, it's a good thing I dealt with the husband he was apologetic but the wife was a (I'm quoting what the officer said here) C U Next Tuesday. She told the officer, so what the dog was attacked! This woman is an animal!
I just keep going over it in my head and thinking if that dog had just gone for her throat it would have been over. I know pitties get a bad rap because of idiots like this! I also know not all of them are like this, it just makes me so angry that they know the dog is vicious so why didn't they have him on a leash?? To boot, I had to pay $400 to the vet and then I lost my cell phone, probably in the 711 parking lot when I went in to get my dog some cheese to cheer her up. I can't even remember which 711 because there are so many of them! So I had to turn my service off.
Everyone is telling me I should send the vet bill to these people but the officer said that just from the two minutes she spent with the wife it would be worth it. Sorry this is so long, I just needed to get this out.

Re: My Dog was attacked by a dog
i am so glad your dog is ok. Regardless of what the officer said, I absolutely WOULD send them the vet bill AND if they dont pay, I would sue them in small claims court. I am glad there is a police report. Wonder how that woman would have reacted if it had been a human child and not a furbaby

ITA apart from the fact that you deserve to be compensated, for safety reasons, these people need to learn a lesson so that this does not happen to another animal or person again.

Re: My Dog was attacked by a dog
I was telling the officer, what if it was one of the kids that skateboard on that block or the people on the corner that have toddlers that play in front of their house? The owner of the dog told the officer that he is kept in a crate in the garage and that the latch probably wasn't secure so when he saw us walk by he got out of the crate. I seriously doubt that he was in his crate at that time because he had his spike collar on. I know when I would put Layla in her crate I would take her collar off, especially if it is one of those chain collars.
I am seriously afraid to go there and talk to them and hand them the bill.

This is one of my biggest fears when walking my dog. So sorry you are going through this, thank goodness your dog is okay. It could have ended a lot worse. I would definitely send them the bill.

Re: My Dog was attacked by a dog
I just spoke to a neighbor of mine 2 doors down. She told me this dog went after her daughter last year when she got off the school bus. The poor kid actually layed on the ground curled up in a ball. And it ran after someone else not long before that.

You need to call the town ASAP. This is a very dangerous situation.

Re: My Dog was attacked by a dog
I called the precinct this morning about the report and was told there iisn't a report . I said then how am I going to prove what this dog did?? And aren't reports generated every time the police are called for any type of "disturbance"?? The officer said that I should start at the bottom and ask the owners to pay for Layla's vet bill and if they don't then taken them to Small Claims court. So I said well wouldn't the judge want proof otherwise it's a "he said/she said" thing. He said, I have no idea I've never sued in Small Claims. That's not what this is all about! I want to report the dog to the proper authorities. I called again later and was given an incident report #. I said how do I get the report to which the officer said I need to subpeona for it!! And then was unceremoniously hung up on. Are they serious???

Re: My Dog was attacked by a dog
OMG. How awful. I am so glad your pup is ok....like you said, could have been sooo much worse if that dog had gone for your pup's neck. Poor poor baby. I looked at the pics. Awful.
They sound like real winners, let's be honest. Can I ask you though...do you really have the energy to go through small claims court? Be sure of this before you start the process.
What I would personally do is call the town and have the town get on them. Just simply to make a record and make your neighborhood possibly a bit safer.
My immediate concern would be getting the town to address the dog. And unfortunately, just b/c a police officer shows up, does not mean a report is taken.
Your poor baby, hope feels better soon. Please keep us updated of what you decide.
Also..just so you know, we have a possibly dangerous dog in our nabe, and we bought doggie mace online through Amazon.com, to possibly help if our dogs get attacked. We carry it at all times, not sure if it works but we carry it. It's something you might want to think about.

I appreciate what you're saying and I know it can be a real headache taking them to court and even if I do "win" doesn't necessarily mean I would collect and I also don't want to believe that these people could target me for retaliation, but on the other hand, what are we teaching these people, that they have no consequences to their actions? And that the dog can continue to terrorize the neighborhood? I will contact the Town and let them be aware of what happened and see how they are going to handle it and if it means I have to harass them every day until they take action, then so be it.
I have a friend who told me today that a couple she knows who has a pit said that pits don't like other dogs and just prefer people. Well, you know what? That is the most assinine thing I have ever heard, like saying you know you have a liability on your hands but are going to turn a blind eye if and when something happens. And I think in this instance, these people probably think the same way yet, allow their dog to freely roam their property without a fence and don't give a crap about what might happen.
Then I look at my dog, who has the sweetest, purest soul and has so much love to give, and see what that dog did to her, the pain she is in, the way she looks at me, what the responding officer told me of the things they said, how the husband was "so nice" and how he "apologized" to the officer, but yet hadn't come to ME to apologize, which just goes to show how it was just lip service to the cop, how the wife made the the heartless "so what" comment, so for all of those reasons, yeah, I think it's worth it to pursue a claim. I'm not rolling over for this one.
I will definitely looking into the spray you mentioned. Thank you .

Good for you. Whatever path you can take to affect action, I wish you luck. It is really scary and astounding to me that you have to go to such lengths when there is an aggressive dog loose in your neighborhood.
Did you get the officer's name? I'd definitely start documenting now. Every name, date and time. If it was me, and none of the agencies that are supposed to protect us come through, I'd probably contact local news outlets like the LI Herald, Patch, Newsday even.
I'm really sorry about Layla and she looks so sad in the pictures. I hope she heals up quickly and I'm glad she wasn't hurt worse. Definitely get something to protect yourselves on your walks.

Re: My Dog was attacked by a dog
You are entitled to the report via the Freedom of Information Act. When you call the pct. ask for a Supervisor. In fact, every time you call, make note of whom you speak to. Explain to the Supervisor of the enitre incident and ask what's their response to this dangerous animal. So, basically you're telling them that there is a dangerous and vicious animal that has attacked your dog and people but more so, that they KNOW about it. Their failure to do something can be brought up in the future if anything should every happen again. You are informing and them and they should basically CYA as well.
HTH and many kisses to poor Layla

Re: My Dog was attacked by a dog
I'm so sorry about your baby!!! That is my biggest fear when I'm out walking my dog.
I would most def sue, and I would sue for pain and suffering. I don't understand how the town doesn't respond to a dangerous dog?? This dog needs to be taken away from these POS owners.
I know people on here have pit bulls and they are sweet with people but its a known fact, even with vets, that pits are animal aggressive!!! They will attack other dogs without provacation and will attack to kill.
I would go to the neighbors and tell them that if they do not pay the bill you are taking them to court and making sure that their dog is taken away and euthanized. Maybe they will pay up then.

If you have the will and energy, YES< go for it. I just worry with wackos like this, could the situation somehow get worse if you pursue legal action? KWIM? But if you are up for the fight, then yes, they of COURSE deserve to be taught a lesson. I just worry that some people can't be taught and do you have the strength to go down that possibility of a road?
Your poor baby. I hear you loud and clear. You want to fight for your baby. I do understand and will for you, whatever you decide.

Re: My Dog was attacked by a dog
Listen I am the owner of a bully breed. My dog is an absolute mush and would never hurt a fly HOWEVER I always take the necessary precautions to make sure I am never in a bad situation. These people are not responsible dog owners. They need to be reported to the town, taken to court to cover your vet bill and they should have to put the dog into some type of training classes. I am so sorry for your poor dog. What an absolute sin!!

Re: My Dog was attacked by a dog
Thank you everyone for all the advice and hugs. Layla is doing much better and is taking her meds like a trooper.
I am hitting a brick wall as to what to do. My boss's friend is an officer with the ASPCA and he said there isn't anything they can do if I call in a complaint. He said the owner of the pit bull hasn't done anything illegal or criminal (meaning the dog did not bite a human, and they weren't abusing the dog or having it fight another pit bull), so, I can't do anything as far as having them come to evaluate the dog. He said to forget about call the Town's Animal Control - I could try but he doesn't believe they will do anything. I guess they want to wait and see if God forbid the dog bites a child, perhaps? How sick is that? As far as reimbursement of the vet bill, he suggests that I put in a claim to their insurance company, not sure whether or not they would cover it because insurance co's do not cover pit bulls. He said, their homeowner's insurance will be dropped though if they did not inform their carrier that they own a pit bull and were never informed of the incident. Of course, to avoid this, they would have to be cooperative and pay the medical expenses. Or we go to small claims court. Not sure how to proceed...
He said that I should have the vet bill sent to them by process server to the husband. So I would have to look into that but I don't want to start off on the wrong foot with these people. I don't know them only a wave here and there before this incident. I would just like to go there and hand them the bill.

Re: My Dog was attacked by a dog
I'm so sorry your dog is hurt and that these people are less than caring. It's ridiculous. It's nice to know that you don't blame all pit bulls though, I know my dog isn't like this at all. I don't even get the point of adopting a dog if you are going to lock it in a crate in your garage. I hope your pup has a speedy recovery and that you get your money back. No way should you have to pay that!

Thanks, Jillian. No, I believe it's how people raise their dogs not whether or not it is a pit bull but the fact that it is agressive to other dogs and has chased people (a child even!) that they should be hyper-vigilant when the dog is outdoors and certainly leash him. As far as keeping him in a crate in the garage, I really feel bad for the poor dog - it probably doesn't interact much with the family and doesn't get much affection, if at all. I even said so to the officer. But that makes me believe that the dog was intentionally raised to be vicious.
