BUT, every child living in an illegal apartment and going to school in that district is costing the taxpayers of that district a boatload of money. The average spending per pupil on LI is something like $20k, 50 extra kids is $1 million dollars that other people have to pay for! And I'm sure in some districts that number of illegal apartments is probably double and triple that! that is insane, IMO!!
OK, then I and many more tax paying parents are off-setting this when we pay tuition for a private school AND SCHOOL TAX. I don't even get a tax credit, nada, nothing. Same can be said for elderly without school aged children in the home, empty-nesters, or young couples without children. This is a huge amount of money!
I tend to agree with this. We don't have kids and we pay the same school taxes as people who have 3 kids in school. I'm not saying those people should pay more, but there is an offset.

I don't want to speak for everyone, but this is what I have a problem with:
New Suffolk school district - 13 freakin' kids in the ENTIRE district; 1 building to maintain; 1 superintendent to pay; couldn't find budget numbers
Shelter Island - 250 students; 1 building; 2 superintendents to pay; $9.6 million budget
Quogue - 128 students; 1 building; 1 superintendent; $7 million budget
Fisher Island - 57 students; 1 building; 1 superintendet; $3.4 million budget
Seriously, no surrounding district can absorb these students???? I just don't get it! And that was about 5 minutes worth of research, so I'm sure it's just the tip of the iceberg.
ETA: And those are only the administrators that have to be disclosed, meaning they made more than $113k in the 07-08 school year!

Re: National average in the US for property taxes is...
It's not just school taxes. It's also all the special districts. Like Lisa said I am grateful for our volunteer fireman but doesn't anyone remember the house that was trying to pass a budget and in that budget was a race car??? Look at all the new updated firehouses being built. Or I live in Crookhaven almost daily I receive a recorded phone call from Foley's office or Kepert's office talking about what Mazzei is doing now, since they are fighting. My tax dollars paying for these phone call which are coming from an out of state agency. Oh and let's not forget when my one town councilperson was handing out a magnet with his name on it and town information and it was investigated and it was found that our tax dollars paid for that. Forget the garbage contracts. I am on the Monday Thursday schedule. Well every time there is a Monday holiday which is often I don't get a pick up, but are my taxes an less than the person on a Tuesday Friday schedule which has more pick ups due to less holidays? nope.
As for the school district there are tons of things that could be cut and should be But truthfully the taxes are going up so much because - A far more top heavy administrators
B- we are receiving less and less aid from the state. Just look over the state contributions for the last 10 years.
C-the other thing is more and more unfunded state and federal mandates under No Child Left Behind act.

Re: National average in the US for property taxes is...
it's hard to combine SDs...each community has different priorities...ie Huntington and Cold Spring Harbor - althought there are definitely SDs that would be easy to combine, ie Harborfields and Elwood
I know that just b/c you pay low taxes it doesn't mean bad education, but it can...my IL's live in rural AZ...the $2K in taxes for 40 ish acres doesn't sound too bad...but the middle school has a 26% literacy rate...that means 74% of the kids can't read on level. to me - that's not worth it!
for other services...I pay $500+ to my library, but it is run so well, better than Barnes and Noble
the park by my house caught on fire (from a cigarette) and the FD was here very quickly - I can't complain
I would be willing to give more to the PD to increase patrol districts set up inthe 60s!!
I love that garbage comes 2x a week - when I lived in So Cal it was once a week - you missed it, you had stinky garbage until the next week!
my car isn't damaged multiple times a winter by potholes, like it was in NYC. My DH's rims are very expensive and we replaced them more times than my highway tax...so I'm saving money there!
I am trying to enjoy my services, rather than be bitter about them...things could be worse

$1800
what are we getting on LI that is worth 3, 4 or more times as much.
I am really curious.
aside from possibly a better education (although a lot of studies show that isn't necessarily the case – national test scores etc are available online), what are LI tax payers getting for SO much more $$$??
Makes me want to move out of state!

I can only speak for New Suffolk. I don't know what their budget is but I do know that after 7th grade they are intergrated into either Southold or Mattitucks high schools (actually they just lost the option to go to Mattituck). I can't imagine them having a lot of money!
