Natural Birth Questions

I graduated from the RE today!

But now I need to find an obgyn who does deliveries (my gyn is just a gyn).

I would really like to have a natural childbirth (mostly b/c I have a huge fear of a needle in my spine plus some neurological issues might make it too risky for me to have an epidural). Will an OBGYN work with me or should I seek out a midwife?

You could try the stony brook midwives.

Re: Natural Birth Questions

Thanks but I live in NYC so I don't think that would work...

I go to an OBGYN, and I plan to have a natural childbirth. My Dr. even made sure we signed up for a lamaze class...

Re: Natural Birth Questions

I can't help with finding an OBGYN, but I would 'interview' some and explain your concerns. They aren't all out there trying to push a c-section or the meds. Talk to who you are looking to go to, and find someone who understands and accepts your position. My mom refused to get an epi due to a spine issue and her doctor was willing to work with her, and when it looked like she was going to need a c-section (my brother was breech), he looked into alternate anesthesias with her (my brother ended up flipping the night before the c-section though so the doctor cancelled it as the anesthesiologist was about to walk in the door). Good luck!! I'm sure you'll find someone who will do what you want! Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon

Oh and congrats on graduation!

Re: Natural Birth Questions

My OB and the other OBs in the office were all very supportive of my desire for a natural birth. In addition I took Hypnobirthing classes. I also communicated my desires with my labor nurse and the staff. Everyone was extremely supportive and i had an amazing experience.

I think the most important thing to do it communicate your wants and have an open mind. I say that bc in the end, the baby really dictates what's going to happen lol

Re: Natural Birth Questions

If you really want natural childbirth I would suggest skipping the OB and finding a good midwife. In general midwives are much more supportive of natural birth, although there are exceptions on both sides. I have a friend who has a midwife she loves in the city. I'll FM you her name once I get it.

Re: Natural Birth Questions

I would definitely try a midwife. I'll ask one of my friends who she used, she's in NYC and had her DD at the birthing center in Brooklyn.

I'm out of state, but I had a natural birth with a regular OB. Feel free to read my birth story if you want to see how it went. Chat Icon

The midwife my friend used was Sylvie Blaustein at the Midwifery of Mahattan. Her number is 212-957-3006. Good luck!

Re: Natural Birth Questions

Try checking out St. Luke's Roosevelt. I believe they're the only hospital in the city with a natural birthing center. They're very pro-natural there. They have the birthing tubs, their own doula program, etc. I've heard great things about having babies there!
