So awful. I work right near there, next door to Creedmoor, and so much stuff has been on lockdown, but not my school...and we're all here late for open school night. Many prayers to his family, and my thoughts are with all of you NCPD wives.

My mom just told me about the press conference update. So SCARY! This guy is still running around. He shot the cop and someone else that he carjacked and they have no leads and not even a really good description of the guy.
WTF??!! What a freaking monster!!
Here is the man they are looking for that is on the run in Queens. He had previously served a sentence for 2nd degree murder. I hope he gets street justice if you KWIM vs getting arrested.

Re: NCPD Cop shot in Queens
Awwww, they just spoke about him on the news.
What a young guy. He's from West Babylon, lived alone.
They were interviewing all of his neighbors and no one had nothing bad to say.
So sad.
Has anyone heard anything about the other person who was killed?
ETA: Just updated with a pic of the guy who was killed. He was on the phone with his daughter when he was shot. I think they said he is from Brooklyn.

Re: NCPD Cop shot in Queens
No, what I meant was, and what the guys talk about - is the spike in violent crime when things get tough... people lose their jobs, there's no money to be found, crime goes up, it's just a cycle that tends to happen. My brother is Bureau of Special Ops - it's like Emergency Service - and they get called in to respond to some of the worst case scenarios. It used to be a pretty normal shift - nothing too crazy - but, these past few years, these guys can't catch their breath - it's like they get shootings several times a week, they are constantly suiting up in riot gear, it's nuts! One of Ken's friends told me, he usually texts his wife a few times during a shift - he's like, these past few months, I'm LUCKY if I get a few free minutes a shift to say "Don't worry, I'm OK" It's NUTS.
But, all that aside, the morale in the Department is really low - it's just awful, worst time in history for the county, and I don't know if it'll ever go back to how it was - I don't think it can. Too much tragedy has happened. But, I hope, one day that things will get a little better.

Re: NCPD Cop shot in Queens
That being said, now that his name was released, I can share this story: this past June, at the MADD walk that we do each year for Ken - Emergency Service's guys were nice enough to donate their tent for us to use. Not only did they do that, they also sent four guys to set up the tent and then they later came afterwards to break it down.
DH and I got there early to make sure everything was set up and to get the custom shirts we ordered out and ready, get the food we bought out and ready for our team, etc. When we got there, the four ESU guys had just finished putting up the tent - one I knew from before that day, Vinnie, and the three others I met then - one of them was this very sweet, very attractive spanish guy, in great shape. About my age. His name embroidered in his special ESU uniform: Lopez.
When I spoke with the Asst. Commissioner this morning, who called me to tell me this had happened, I realized right away that it was him - from the walk. I remember them, particularly him, telling me not to worry at all about the tent, they would take care of everything. He is exactly how the people on TV, neighbors and such, described him - smiling, warm, so easy going, and kind. I thanked them so much for their help - offered them food/drinks but they wouldn't take anything. Finally, I got them to, at least, accept some shirts. So, I gave them "Team Officer Baribault" shirts - I gave one to Officer Lopez, one to Vinnie, and one each to the other two men who were there.
I came home and told DH, who immediately remembered him, and DH said, I knew I recognized him when I saw the picture and couldn't place it until you said it - the two of us just started crying. It's just not fair.

He has been caught.
It's too bad they didn't have to kill him to take him down. That's the only bad part. Has anyone read his rap sheet? He's a lifelong pice of shit. NY needs the death penalty.

Thank you for sharing this. I thought I saw your pic on Newsday walking behind your brother at the Funeral on Monday and was thinking of you. My brother is also NCPD and I completely understand what you're saying about the economy as well as the morale of the officers. I didn't personally know Artie but my brother did and from what I hear, he was not only an amazing officer but just an all around amazing person. My heart breaks to think that his life is now over at the hands of a cold-blooded animal, it's not fair So many prayers for his soul, his family and the entire department. Such a shame.

Dani what a warm but heartbreaking story. My thoughts and prayers are with Officer Lopez's family. My DH is FDNY and they had also responded to the scene
May all the NCPD, SCPD NYPD and FDNY members continue to stay safe

The next time the news asks me for a quote, they did so at Officer Olivieri's funeral, but I said nothing - I was just sad that day and between the poking of questions and the following us as we walked into church clicking constantly taking our pictures, I was in no mood. But the next time they ask me - probably at Officer Lopez's funeral which should be Saturday, I'm going to give them an earful.
I'm going to tell them, and I truly believe this, that the residents of Nassau County need to wrap their arms, collectively, around this Department of Officers. We need to come together to support them as they are going through an unimaginably difficult time - this is the FOURTH line of duty death in less than 18 months. They are truly suffering. And, from what I hear, I don't know if Officer Lopez's partner will ever be able to work in the full capacity again - and, at the least, he'll never be the same. The residents, in my opinion, need to be supportive in ways similar to how the people of NYC bolstered the FDNY/NYPD after 9/11... That, we are here for you, we feel for you, we understand, and thank you for all that you do - is SUPER important, and I think - because Nassau's been kicked while it's down, I think the Department needs that. I feel like, if you are a resident - send some food over to your local precinct. Or to the hanger where ESU, BSO, and Highway keep their vehicles and have their offices - ESU lost Lopez, BSO lost Brietkopf, and Highway lost both Califano and Olivieri - so, send some ziti over to the men, send some soda over there. Whatever it takes - write out a prayer card, that you are thinking of them and praying for them. Then, write another for the families of the Officers - send that to the PBA and they'll pass it on to the families. Our family STILL receives cards from people about Kenneth and I can't tell you how much it means - the families need that, and the Department, the Officers - they need it too. It's so crucial. If you see a Nassau Officer, thank him for what he does - say, I'm so sorry to hear about the deaths of your fellow Officers, I'm thinking about you. Much like you thank a Vet for his service - these men serve the County and it's dangerous. That's what I want to say - because that's how I truly feel and in my heart, I feel it's so important. I just feel that these guys are hurting SO bad. It MIGHT help lift the spirits a little. The public opinion/feelings matter to them more than you think.
Now, how am I going to get all of that in a quote?

Thank you for sharing this. I thought I saw your pic on Newsday walking behind your brother at the Funeral on Monday and was thinking of you. My brother is also NCPD and I completely understand what you're saying about the economy as well as the morale of the officers. I didn't personally know Artie but my brother did and from what I hear, he was not only an amazing officer but just an all around amazing person. My heart breaks to think that his life is now over at the hands of a cold-blooded animal, it's not fair So many prayers for his soul, his family and the entire department. Such a shame.
I hope you find a way to fit that in, because I do think people need to hear ... not just hear, UNDERSTAND this.
Print it out and hand it to them! Tell them that is your statement and to print it please!! That was so beautifully stated, hopefully newsday will do something right and let everyone read what you feel.
