Need help re: Formula for ~7 week old
DD is btw 7-8 weeks old. She has had trouble pooping since she was ~3 weeks old and the ped. had us put 1/2 oz of prune juice in with her formula feedings.
DD is now taking 4 oz of formula (Similac advanced) w/.5 oz of prune juice. She gets about 1 bottle of 4 oz BM/day.
We raised changing her formula at the 1 month visit with the ped and he didn't recommend it since at that point she was going about 2-3 times a day. Now, she only has 1 poop/day if I am lucky and gets rather fussy when she can't go, but tries with all her might (red faced, scruntched legs, etc). I have given her mylicon at these moments.
Is this a formula issue or just her digestive system still developing?
I don't know what to do and she just seems so unhappy.

My DD is 8 weeks and poops 1x/day. Sometimes she demonstrates the same behaviors (grunting, red face). Ped said 1x every other day is enough.

Can I ask what formula she's on?

My twins always pooped once per day. They were first on Similac Neosure (half breastmilk), then Similac Sensitive (half breastmilk), then Similac Sensitive RS (for spit up).

Re: Need help re: Formula for ~7 week old
DD only pooped every other day at that age and now is every 2 to 3 days (she's 22 weeks now, though). She was still getting as much BM as I could give her (about 1 bottle a day) at 6 weeks old.
Her ped said she doesn't consider it constipation until it's been more than 4 days. I asked at her 2-month appointment. But it stinks to see the baby in pain. I have to wonder if the prune juice is making things worse maybe? I don't know though -- I'm definitely not a doctor.

Re: Need help re: Formula for ~7 week old
If your baby is going once a day and it isn't hard poop, I'd wait it out a few mroe weeks and see. With both my sons, they needed to go everyday or they'd scream in pain all day long and push all day long and when they would go it was rock hard. Both had formula changed and it helped them go everyday and soft. Both have lactose issues and at 6 and 4 still do.
My daughter would be like you described but when she did go - it was soft and often explosive. She never went everyday early on - every 2-3 days but wasn't in pain all day long - only when she was pushing or if she she waited more than 2 days to go. My dr did recommend the prune juice but I never tried it and waited it out. As time went on she got better and she poops usually once a day or every other day but like a regular baby (she is 3.5 mos -I'd say around 8-10 weeks things really changed for the better) - no more like she is have problems. I think she figured it all out now. (I did change formula to rice starch but she had reflux and it helped with that but it is still milk based and when she first changed it was worse for the 1st week until she got use to it.)

from a ped. dietitian...
Gentlease, Gentlease, Gentlease...best formula out there...works great on fussy and gassy babies b/e the proteins are partially broken down. It is also a reduced lactose product so it helps with gas, but keeps enzyme lactase working in the gut, unlike Sim sensative which is lactose free.

I use Enfamil Premium Infant now but before it was Newborn. I noticed that DS had trouble pooping too and would go once ever 24-36 hours... This concerned me a whole lot..plus he was really gassy. Regularly spit up. I brought this concern up to the doctor and said it was normal as long as his poop is not hard and there is no blood in its okay. and that babies normally spit up. However, I switched to Gentlease and then his poop started getting harder and he still had trouble pooping. Sooooo I switched back to Premium and his poop was normal again! He still goes once a day. Once he went 3x in a day which really surprised me. Now he is back to 1/day or sometimes longer. After a day he would get uncomfy but he never went above 2 days.
I would wait it out. Baby's digestive system takes a while to develop. My DS is 14 weeks now... he seems to be doing fine on Enfamil Premium.... I think.... it still bothers me that he spits up often and my pediatrician says he might have acid reflux but..he doesn't seem in pain when he does so. He actually smiles afterwards! So I'm just waiting it out before I give him any Zantac which was prescribed.
