Need some help... Health/Allergy/child development related (long)
Okay, so I just found out that my son Lance has a significant soy allergy. (level3/4) I started Lance on Soy formula when he was about 7 months old. At 12 months I put him on Soy milk because he did not do well on cow's milk. He is now 21 months old, so he has been on soy for about 14 months.
About a month ago Lance started having "episodes." He was staring into space, breaking out into rashes and hives out of nowhere, acting strange... Just crazy stuff. So I took him to the ped & we found out about the soy allergy.
So my concern is that he has been exposed to soy for so long... drinking tons of it daily and eating it in almost every product... I am thinking that this is the cause of his developmental issues.
Now I have asked the doctor 2x in the past to allergy test him and he refused because of his age. This time he only tested him for 4 things even though I asked for full allergy testing.
Lance has been off of soy products for two weeks... He is acting a lot better, however he still gets hives in and around his eyes sometimes. My ped. is now telling me to take him to a ped. dermatologist.
So after that long story the questions....
WWYD.. Take him to the derm. or take him to an allergy specialist to have more testing done, or both? Other?
Has anyone ever had this happen to them or their DC?
Is it possible that this is the cause of his delays?
Can an allergy develop like this or did he have it all along?
I'm sorry for the rant but I don't even know how this could have gone unnoticed for so long. I feel so bad for my poor son, and so guilty.
Any advice or input is appreciated.

Don't feel guilty. I can't speak to the long term effects of the soy on him, but I'd take him to both specialists to find out. An allergist is going to know better the answers to your questions than the pediatrician will. We use one in Merrick that I know several other families on here use as well. Let me know if you want her info. She tested for a bunch of stuff that the pediatrician didn't test DS for.
My DS has a severe dairy allergy and one of his big symptoms is severe eczema, even after he had been off dairy completely for over 6 months it was terrible on his face. Only a dermatologist was able to clear it up without using a steroid, which was the pediatrician & allergist's recommendation.
Try not to feel guilty, although I know how you feel. It took me over a week to figure out that my son's bad diaper rash was really an allergic reaction to the Huggies we'd started using at night. I felt like such an idiot and a terrible mom for putting him through that.

I'd take him to the Allergist first and then if the hives/rashes don't clear up after you eliminate the things he is allergic to I'd take him to the derm. I have a WONDERFUL Peds. Derm who cleared up my DD excema in 3 days after months of trying all different things. Her face was literally ut open from the excema. He is a GOD in m book because my DD face would be scarred if I didn't eventually find him The first Peds Derm I went to had her on a medicine that wound up to be totally wrong.

I had an episode a few years back where i had was very itchy all over. Benadryl worked to get rid of it but then i got a rash around my eyes for about 6 months. one dermatologist final put me on tetracyclline for three months and it finally went away.

I'd recommend a pediatric nutritionist and an immunologist. Allergies are a result of the immune system attacking non-threatening substances for various reasons. Soy is a really common allergy, as is dairy. I'd be very, very careful with giving him any drugs to cure the hives. They are there for a reason...and it's the root cause that needs to be treated, not the hives. I'm sure that he'll be fine though.....just boost his little immune system. Good Luck to both of you!!!

I haven't any experience in this realm, but my girlfriend does. Her daughter is allergic to soy, dairy & tree nuts. She had her tested by an allergist at 1 year old to find all this out.
One other resource she loves is the site foodallergy.org She said she got a lot of info from them. They also have allergy alerts for mislabeled products that contain undeclared allergens like soy & dairy.
Hope this helps!

DD has a milk protein intolerance (not allergy, that's the wrong word and is frequently used incorrectly).
Yes, your DC could have developed an allergy due to repeat exposure.
Take your DC to the pediatric dermatologist as was recommended. They will better be able to guide you on whether you should do anything at all for the hives. Likely they will see if it goes away with soy removed from the diet first. As for the pediatric allergist, it couldn't hurt. There is no such thing as a definitive test for these types of food allergies. They will do some blood testing, and possibly do that in conjunction with skin testing. None of it is definitive though, it just gives you a good idea if your kid is likely allergic.
Hope your DC is ok.

Re: Need some help... Health/Allergy/child development related (long)
My DS was just diagnosed with celiac disease (can't have gluten) meanwhile for the past year thats all he has eaten since its in everything. Although he never had any delays once the celiac started to tke affect within his body he started to seriously regress. He stopped walking and talking. He would stare off into space a lot, mumble incoherently. This happened literally overnight and lasted about a week or 2 until he was diagnosed and taken off of gluten. He has been gluten free for 3 weeks now and is about 85% normal again. Sorry so long but take him to both specialists ASAP, we took my boy to everyone and anyone while this was happeneing. Good luck.

OMG, I am so sorry Yes, this is what is/ was happening to him.... He stopped babbling, would stare into space, went from being active & happy all day to just laying around, cranky all day, was not responding, would not eat, was VERY pale, then he became covered in a rash & hives, had blisters in his thoat, and hives in & around his eyes.
Now that he has been off the soy for 2 weeks he seems a lot better but he is still very pale & sick looking, and still pretty cranky. (although he is responsive & alert again)
I'm just really worried that there is something else going on, maybe more allergies...
Glad your son is feeling better

ITA. Also, I'd consider possibly geting the Allergist or immunologist to order the testing if your Ped is not willing to comply.
On another note, my DS is mildly allergic to Soy and to Cow's milk, so he is on Goat's milk. I have to have a local service deliver it b/c it is hard to find (and impossible to find organic) but his health has improved greatly since the switch
