Newborn Moms-- do you get out at all?? UPDATE-- I went out today!
I was able to get out for an exciting walk to CVS to buy some A+D... 8 blocks each way! I switched my middle of the night feeding with DH, so when I got up first thing to nurse her, I hopped in the shower, took care of a few things and by 12 30 after a feeding, I was able to get out.
Mission accomplished!
Now that the weather is getting warmer, I could feasibly leave my apt-- although I still have to wait to go to big public places. So, the last day or so I have been entertaining the thought of a walk, a local errand, etc.
But, before I know it-- the day is over. Between all the shite I gotta take care of for Sasha, trying to feed and clean myself-- I just run out of time. And if I get to a point where I think, ok I can throw her in the stroller and get out, she starts to stir as it's time for a feeding, then change, etc.
I can't stay inside forever, and I know as she gets older-- it will be easier to get out since she won't be feeding so often, but how does everyone else do it?

Re: Newborn Moms-- do you get out at all??
Randi - I've been getting out with Samantha.. I just can't stay in the house anymore!
We ventured out with her twice last week for about an hour - once to Target, and once to BRU. We are also going back to our Friday night routine tomorrow night and going to the diner for dinner.
I was out with her and the baby nurse today too, we went to Target and BRU again. Sunday is supposed to be 65 degrees, and I do plan on taking her out for a walk, maybe even on Saturday as well.
What I've been doing is instead of going back to bed after I feed her at 6:00, I eat breakfast and shower then since she is sleeping. I would love to go back to sleep, but then I know I will never get to shower or eat! I feed her which takes almost an hour, then I pump when I put her back down. By that time it's already 7:30. I then have two hours to myself before she wakes up again to eat.

we've been taking DS out since he was 3 weeks old. The first time, yes it did take a while to get out of the house, but now its pretty easy. I couldn't stand staying inside all day. In fact, we just got back from Costco. I also find Liam is less fussy when we are out and about.

DH does this feeding-- and I sleep, since I wake up in the middle of the night--- so, I usually get up with her at like 8 30 or 9AM. This has allowed me to stay sane throughout the day. I have been getting myself into the shower before noon-- but then I gotta feed her again, then myself. And I guess I have so many projects or things on my to do list around the house-- I feel like I never find the time to get everything together to get out.
I know the weather is going to be so warm the next few days, I really have to try to get out to do something. I just don't know how I am gonna do it.

Re: Newborn Moms-- do you get out at all??
I just want to add, that when I take her out, we go out pretty much immediately after she eats. I know I have at least a good 3 to 3.5 hours before she is ready to eat again, this way I'm not rushing to get home to feed her.

yup---it takes a little getting used to since i'm ebf. we went to bru the other day and you really appreciate those places that have a mother's room. the mall here close to me has a women's lounge with little individual sitting areas and curtains so you can breast feed. it's nice.

Re: Newborn Moms-- do you get out at all??
I remember these days vividly--i would wait until after i fed DS and then literally run out the door (with diaper, wipes and bottle)
Then we would walk and if it was his feeding time again I would stop and feed him (usually at starbucks) and I have changed him in a new york & company dressing room
Just go!!

The first time is absolutely the hardest - and this weather isn't helping at all.
Do it right after you feed her so that you have a few hours to get to where you need to go, do what you have to do, and get home. She'll most likely pass out right away anyway! The earlier you do it the easier it will be on you!

no, I haven't gone anywhere with the baby, except to the ped office. My MIL is very traditional, and in our culture the mother and child needs to stay indoors for 1 month.. I am going nuts!!!

Re: Newborn Moms-- do you get out at all??
we have been out a bunch of times but mainly due to a bunch of Dr. appointments for Lexi.
On the weekends we still go hiking in the woods with the dogs and I bundle her up and carry her in teh sling.
We aren't venturing into stores until 8 weeks though as per our pediatricians recomendations.
We are getting out of the house though so I'm fine with waiting.

As paranoid as I am about some things, we have already taken a short trip t the store, and will do so again tonight. I keep him covered (canopy on the infant seat over his head). I just cannot stay in the house...I go insane.

this is what I did. I loved it. I love taking him out with me now, and being the new mom and everyone peering inside the stroller to see my cutie.

outside of family parties, we've only been out a couple times.... and only short walks around main st.
Eryk is 5 mo old and STILL has never been in a store (can you tell that I totally don't want to go there yet? )

THis is what I did in the beginning. Plan some short outings so you dont have to worry about feedings or changing diapers

Re: Newborn Moms-- do you get out at all??
Living in a 3rd floor walk up makes it a little challenging for me to get out with DD alone. I tend to put her in the Bjorn for short trips rather than lug the stroller and her up and down the stairs. It took me a while to get out as well. I much prefer when DH is home so he can help me.

What I did and still do is get the diaper bag ready at night and would put it in my car. When they were newborns, I would get ready after the 1st morning feeding which was 6am. When they woke up, I got them ready, fed them, put them in the infant seat, grabbed my purse and off we went.

Re: Newborn Moms-- do you get out at all??
you just have to pick a day and plan to just get up and go. Even if it's just out for a little walk, you need to get out when the weather's nice. once you start with the little outings you'll find it's so much easier to plan for a longer outing.

When I go out, it's generally after her 9:30 feeding. By that time it's almost 11:00 and I know I have until at least 1:30-2:00 until she wants to eat again. She usually passes right out in the car and stays asleep for the duration of our trip. Usually she will still sleep for another 30-45 minutes once we get home as well.

Re: Newborn Moms-- do you get out at all??
I started taking them out at 6 weeks and have been out almost every day. I even took them into the city last week! You just gotta get out and do it, it will become second nature. I usually feed them right before I leave and if they need to eat while I am out I will either bring a bottle of expressed BM or nurse them where ever I am.

Re: Newborn Moms-- do you get out at all??
If the weather was ok (at least 40 degrees), I tried to take DS on walks. I started taking him to public places around 7 weeks. I don't have an issue BFing in public so if we're out and he's hungry, I'll feed him. Nordstroms is great b/c they tend to have lounges in the bathrooms with changing tables and couches.
I try to get out at least once per week during the week (usually somehwere like the mall) and I try to go out on the weekends with DH and DS. I've gone to restaurants with him and he usually does pretty well. I went to the movies once b/c the local theater has a mom's movie once per month. I feel so much better when I get out of the house.

Re: Newborn Moms-- do you get out at all??
I've left the house 4 times since I had my DS almost a month ago. Twice was to the pediatrician, once to the OBGYN (my nips were cracked and bleeding), and once I ran to BuyBuyBaby while my mom watched Frankie! THATS IT!! But I'm actually dealing well- I was always a homebody, so its not that big of a deal!

Re: Newborn Moms-- do you get out at all??
I've been getting out since 2 weeks old. I was going crazy at home and I find DS' temperament is soooo much better when we are out and about. I joined some mommy groups - it has really helped to make plans where I have to be somewhere at a certain time. It's frenzied getting out of the house but we always manage to do it. Enjoy!
