newborn sleeping question

When did your newborn spend more time awake during the day? KJ still mostly sleeps all day ..he wakes to eat, stays up for about 30-45 minutes and then it is back to sleep

he also has a witching hour every night at 8:30-9pm when he cries and cries for about 30 minutes

Is this normal sleep pattern? He is 4 weeks today

remind me if infants, on their own, start going down for specific naps or is this something I should start by putting him in his crib at certain signs of sleepiness to get him used to taking structured naps?

Re: newborn sleeping question

It was quite a while before DD was more awake during the day. At 4 weeks old, basically she woke up, ate and would fall back asleep within 10 minutes of finishing her bottle. I ALWAYS put her back in her crib, or the PNP bassient when she was asleep. Her witching hour was around 8:30pm as well. Eventually, as she started being more awake (I'd say around 8/9 weeks for my DD), I only put her in down for a "scheduled" nap 2 times a day. Mostly because I really needed to get out of the house to run errands, so she would sleep in the car. By 9 weeks she was consistently sleeping through the night. Our schedule looked like this

Wake at 6am - bottle
She ALWAYS went back to sleep after, even after STTN.
9:30/10:00 wake up
Bottle/dressed, out running errands
1:00/1:30 bottle
2:00 nap - this used to be a LONG nap. until 6:00/6:30.

Now at 8 months we are basically on the same schedule, except that she wakes up aroun 7/7:30 and goes down for a nap around 9am (sometimes 8:30 if she is REALLY showing tired signs). She'll nap until 10:30/11:00 (sometimes, 11:30).

2nd nap is at 2/2:30 and she wakes up around 5ish.

I basically set this schedule for her around what was convienent for me....Chat Icon I honestly don't really know HOW I did it.

Re: newborn sleeping question

my DC were both awake on day 3!! my friend however has a 6 week old that still sleeps almost all day.

I always went by their sleepy signs and the "rule" that they need to sleep after 1.5 - 2 hours of awake time. I usually always put them down for a nap if they don't go on their own. For both my DC it just always morphed into morning nap 10 - 12 and afternoon nap 2 - 4pm. Cat nap at 6 and bed at 8....They started to show a "routine" around 8 weeks.

Re: newborn sleeping question

My DS is 3 weeks old. He will literally sleep the day away. When he is awake, which is usually morning and night, it's about 45 minutes. He is most awake around 8, 9ish at night. I am not even going to try to develop a routine just yet. But, I am hoping he will stay awake longer during the day. It's such a treat when his eyes are open.
