Nighttime Potty?

Okay DS is potty trained during the day, but he still wears a pull up at night, and everything is soaked, every morning. How did you teach your child to go potty at night? He just doesn't seem to wake up.

I would hate to put him back in a diaper, and I am not sure that would help either. DH thinks he's feeling his penis, and everything is sprayed everywhere. This morning his face was even wet!

Any suggestions are very welcome!

Re: Nighttime Potty?

DS will be 5 in July.

Up until about 5 months ago we still had him in pullups at night because he always wet the bed.

I finally had enough. I vowed that we were done with pullups. So we limited the drinks at night. Made him pee right before he went to bed. And then took him to pee again between 11 and midnight when we went to sleep. He rarely has accidents. I do think a certain level of maturity stepped in to the mix to be able to hold it a little. However, i do know that if we don't take him before we go to sleep he will pee. It happened last night as a matter of fact. That was the first accident he had in months.

Not sure how long we'll have to take him to pee but it works so we're ok with it. It's not a big deal since he always goes back to sleep.

Yeah, we probably should just take the pull-ups off. They aren't doing much good at this point anyway (he's wearing them and the bed is still wet).

I think I need to talk to his teachers about making sure he's getting enough to drink at school. He isn't big on water, which is what they tend to offer. So he wants drinks when he gets home. We cut him off by 7:30 last night, and asked him to go to the bathroom before bed (he refused, said he didn't need to). This is something we need to build into his routine.

I cannot picture waking him up and getting him back to sleep without a struggle, but maybe we'll try this weekend and see what happens.

Thanks for the tips!

If I knew my DS wouldn't go back to sleep right away I would never wake him up. He's still be in pull-upsChat Icon

Truth is, at 11pm he is totally sound asleep. We have to carry him and hold him steady while he pees. he barely wakes up. Try it one night and see how it goes.

But I probably wouldn't sacrifice his sleep (or mine) for this solution if it didn't work for us.

C- make him go before bed, even if he says he doesn't have to. Make him pull down his pants and stand in front of the toilet and he may go, even if he says he doesn't need to. I will have P. go sometimes just before bed, even if he went an hour earlier if he had a lot to drink with dinner. I would say 9 times out of 10 he goes. I think just being "out there" and in position makes them go. Chat Icon

I also did the "dream pee" around 11 when we were first potty training. He barely woke up and went right back to sleep when I put him back to bed. It was better than waking up at 3 or 4 to him crying in a wet bed.

Get rid of the pull up. Wet underwear are a lot more uncomfortable than wet pull ups - it may be an incentive to stop.
