Re: NSLIJ Southside or Good Sam?
I can't speak for Good Sam since I never delivered there, but I can say that I had DD at Southside and it was great. I don't have one complaint. The nurses were all great, so nice and accommodating, from L&D to the maternity floor after. Nobody pushed breastfeeding on me. They took her to the nursery every night without a word. Very helpful and caring staff. I had a great experience there and if I were to have another I'd go back in a heartbeat.

Thank you!
I had DD at Good Sam but my DR delivers at both. I was considering Southside because it is not a Catholic Hospital and therefore I would be able to have the Tubal Ligation done as part of my C/S.
I just can't find anything on the site for Southside about a NICU.

I just saw in my Drs office that Good Sam with have all new suites in early 2015....I couldn't find anything else on it but I think that might make me stay at Good Sam. I delivered there in 2011 and the only issue I had was a horrible roommate

New private suites that you don't have to pay for?
When I had DD in 2011 I was lucky to have the room all to myself the entire time I was there.

NSLIJ Southside or Good Sam?
I chose Southside between the two. When I was looking for OBs I refused to find a doctor at Good Sam. Southside built a new maternity wing and is now part of LIJ. I have a lot of concerns over Good Sam as a hospital in general based on experience of people I know. 10 years ago I probably would have gone anywhere over Southside, but its much better now.

Do you know if they have private rooms? If so, do you have to pay for them? Do they have a NICU?

Southside has private rooms. You can request one upon admission, but you do have to pay. 2 years ago I think they were $220/night. I didn't pay for a private room, and ended up with a roommate only 1 of the 3 nights I was there. Overall I had a very positive experience there. I'll be delivering there again within the next 2-3 weeks, so I can report back again.
Southside has a low level NICU- level 2 I believe. I think Good Sam might be level 3, so one step above.

NSLIJ Southside or Good Sam?
I haven't seen it myself yet, but I know they are their own wing with their own entrance, parking, elevators, etc. I know they do have private rooms, but I do believe you have to pay extra for them. But the L&D room is supposed to be spacious which I heard is a big issue with Good Sam. But I haven't seen either so I am just going by my friends and the many doctors I know who work out of one or both hospitals.
They do have a NICU, I have several friends whose babies were in it.

Yes, this is all true. Labor and delivery room is HUGE. I got lucky and had to stay in mine the first night and day after DD was born bc they had no available postpartum rooms, lol.

Re: NSLIJ Southside or Good Sam?
I had a horrible experience at Southside. I changed doctors so I wouldn't have to deliver there again. The nurses were horrible and made several mistakes with my care, luckily nothing serious. And the LC was my assigned nurse one day, but never came to see me because she was teaching a class at that time, meanwhile I had a newborn that was struggling to eat and no help.
I know several people who had great experience though, and delivered their 2nd and 3rd babies there as well.
Private rooms are $250 if any are available, and the NICU is low level.

NSLIJ Southside or Good Sam?
Southside was fantastic from beginning to end. The nurses were wonderful. One of the nurses sat with me for an hour and a half working with DS to get him to latch, trying the pump, etc. I got lucky and did not have a roommate when I was there.

Re: NSLIJ Southside or Good Sam?
I had both my kids there and thought my whole experience was excellent. The nurses are great in both the L&D and maternity floor.
My sister had both her boys there too, one was in the NICU for 10 days, and she just loved the care that he got. She still talks about all the NICU nurses 3 years later.

I delivered twice at Good Sam and I thought the L&D suites were huge. Maybe they said the Mother/Baby rooms were small? I was super lucky at got a private room at GS so I can't comment on what the other rooms are like.

NSLIJ Southside or Good Sam?
I met a neo-natal nurse from Good Sam on the plane to Florida. She said that Good Sam is starting construction on a new maternity wing this winter, but it won't be complete by the time I deliver in April. They are trying to update to compete with Southside, she said (her words) because she said Southsides new wing is beautiful. They will be adding private recovery rooms and bigger l&d rooms. Just an FYI.

Delivered last week at Southside. My experience this time around was even better than my first. Could not have asked for more professional, compassionate care from every single nurse I encountered, in labor and delivery and in the maternity ward.
I choose to formula feed and was never ever made to feel the least bit guilty of my choice. I chose to send DD to the nursery at night and was encouraged to do so, so that I would have adequate rest. I was able to get a private room at no charge this time around, bc of DH's prior military service. Last time, we weren't aware of that benefit. Breakfast, lunch, and dinner were all served buffet style. I think that covers the basics, but if you have any specific questions, feel free to ask!

Same. The nurses were really incredible at Good Sam, both L&D and maternity. I also had a horrible roommate and one of the fantastic maternity nurses took pity on me and moved me to a small, private room for my second night. Happy to hear they will have new rooms. Desperately needed.
