I've worked in healthcare my entire adult life. I no longer work for a hospital and tomorrow is my first snow day ever. I have trekked through the subway, over the 59th street bridge and skidded along the LIE in blizzards to get to work. If there is one group of people whose safety is completely disregarded, it's healthcare workers.
I'm glad teachers have off. I bet most parents do, too. But I can assure you, there are tons of doctors, nurses, techs, therapists, etc who are scrambling to find childcare and nervous about driving in a blizzard. They don't get the day off.
That is part of what i am saying. All these workers including teachers are in service oriented jobs where you serve "customers". The flaunting of something like a snow day doesn't look good and its unprofessional.
Could you imagine your loved one being in the hospital and a nurse was bragging about drinking wine, sleeping in and jumping up and down cause of a snow day!? People who do this are adding to the bad reputation of teachers. And again as a parent who send her kids to public schools i find it concerning just as I would as a taxpayer if a police officer was acting unprofessionally.
"Bragging about drinking wine"? Are u serious?? Teachers get like one snow day a year, if that! You have got to be joking. Smh

Re: NYC DOE closed!
Yes, there is nothing wrong to be happy with a day off. Every body has different circumstances, some chosen, others not. Personally I feel happy because very soon DH will go into crazy busy hours and we won't have even weekends together as a family for months anymore. And yes, when I married him I knew that; as same as when someone choses a profession knows the ordeals that profession could bring. As someone mentioned, of course it sucks, but it is life. I think anyone has the right to feel x or y way; what I don't agree with, is giving the etiquete as 'unprofessional' to someone that chooses to share their excitement in social media. The person I know from the school is a mother in admin position there, but even if it was a teacher with or without kids, I wouldn't judge that as unprofessional ever.

Omg Seriously.
Teachers deserve it and more. Way more
Enjoy it ladies and gents. A day to yourself. A day with your kids. Enjoy it.
Also shameful plug for all the Dsny/sanitation/plow people
They never get put in the group of workers out there
Dh will be working 12-15 hour shifts over night in this cold. We plan to thaw him when he gets in lol

NYC DOE closed!
Is this for real? I belong to a teacher group where a pregnant woman is debating taking a day during a blizzard. To me that is depressing and a commentary on our system. I feel badly for essential and emergency workers who are endangering themselves and appreciate it, but I do not place us as teachers in the same place as them at all. At the end of the day, everyone is inconvenienced but kids and caretakers should stay safe. The uproar if heaven forbid a bus load of children was harmed would be expected and justified. That being said, I don't brag at all but I learned a long time ago there is no prize for being the pregnant hero with a sick child in the backseat taking 4 hours to get home from a day of "teaching" where there was a nearly empty class watching movies.

Right? DD JUST went back fron Xmas break. She was so gappy to go back, we were all going nuts... 2 daya back and she's home again. Booooo
Do my kids teachers hate their jobs so much (nyc schools)?? If so, i feel bad for them and my kids.
I chose a job i love and 99% of time want to go to work. I am not interested in a snow day after being off for 10 days.
I understand safety issues like driving in from out east but cheering like the kids themselves all over FB isnt what I want to see as a parent.

Ok, no offense but let's get serious. It's 100% about our safety and the safety of our students
I work in a school just right on the Nassau queens border and too many times I've driven home and almost gotten slammed in to, skidded across an intersection, and it's taken me well over four hours to get home. I can't imagine what someone else with a longer commute would go through. Not sure about you, but I don't want to die trying to be a superhero going to work on a day when weather men and county officials tell people to stay off the roads.
Furthermore, Some of my students get bussed from other districts in the ass end of queens to attend our school. It's not only dangerous for them to be out on the roads, walking to the bus when half of them are already physically unstable and medically fragile, but it takes them even longer to get back and forth
When my kids schools are closed here , it obviously means the conditions are not ok for the school buses to be driving. If a bus can't get through my neighborhood streets what makes it ok for me to drive those same roads to go all the way to work and then face worsening conditions to come back?
It's common sense to close the city schools. I shouldn't get penalized and get one of my personal days taken away when circumstances beyond my control dictate that I shouldn't be driving.
I get all the points you are making and would feel the same. Publicly cheering about isnt professional though. Especially in jobs like healthcare and education IMO. I would never do that particularly on social media.
OMG seriously? So don't do it. Cheering for a snow day isn't a crime. Unbelievable

My FB feed is full of businesses that are closed tomorrow. Restaurants, retail stores, etc. The mall closed during the last blizzard, I remember. They don't want people on the roads during a storm....then they can't plow, people get stuck, etc. In fact, I'm surprised they haven't issued a state of emergency banning non essential vehicles from the roads tomorrow like they have done in the past.

We are going to hell. We are horrible. Unproffesional human beings. We care only about our own pleasure. We asked god and the mayor to close the schools so we can sit at home and post on facebook all day. LMFAO. This has to be a joke. LOL

Re: NYC DOE closed!
With all the bragging that goes on on FB, teachers being happy to be off the roads and home with their own kids is really not a big deal. They will be home enjoying their own kids, which sounds caring and nurturing, just as I’d want my DC’s teacher to be. These debates always come down to the same thing, finding fault with teachers because they have a nice schedule and pensions, and ignoring how exhausting the day to day must be. So many people will work from home tomorrow, are they allowed to brag or is that unprofessional? It’s a job, a choice, I don’t expect teachers to love their job above all else.

Thank you!
I do enjoy my job...but if given the choice between staying home with my children and enjoying the day and going to work, I prefer to stay home....Sorry if that is such a crime! In addition, my husband is one of those workers who would have to go out in the storm...he drives the subways and even if they close, he still has to report to work. Yes, there are a lot of people who have to go out in the storm, and I do feel bad for them. And I wouldn't begrudge anyone for being happy for not being out there.
Do I begrudge others for being able to WFH whenever they want? Nope nope I don't (and ftr, for most of the people I know WFH - they still go to their childrens performances, dr. appts, etc so IMO WFH just means take the day without getting docked).
And FTR if my district was open, I would happily go to school and teach (although probably 80 percent of kids wouldn't be there anyways).

Re: NYC DOE closed!
Being excited we have a job that will sometimes close so that students and parents and teachers dont have to wake up earlier to clean off cars, shovel, bundle up and leave earlier and worry about getting into an accident or to be happy as a teacher to get a day home with my own kid, does not mean I do not love my job and my students. You have no idea how hard we work (and I absolutely know that everyone works hard at their job/ puts their life at risk) but people tend to think teaching is a joke. I dont go to work to just get a paycheck.
I saw more parents cheering on fb that schools were closed than I saw my teacher friends.
And I also see many others complaining their offices arent closed or cheering they are closed etc.

I definitely saw this myself! I never realized so many people would WANT their kids home after them having 10 days off. (safety issues aside, obviously!) But the ironic part, these same people who were cheering for the snow day, were JUST posting the day before how happy they were to have the kids go back to school after the holiday break.
I really think a lot of these people just can't function without posting non stop on facebook/just want attention.

If there was a choice not to have snow at all, I'd go with that and have dd in school. But since it's horrendous out there, I'm glad not to have to worry about trekking out to get my kid to school and back.

well that's a little judgemental... so ONLY teachers get excited when they get a day off work? Dh loves his job and his best friends are some of his coworkers. however, when he gets a day off he is really excited about it. thank you for assuming that all NYC teachers are a bunch of a-holes who hate children, though.
Oh and by the way: during those ten days off, I was grading papers, readjusting my classroom seating chart to reflect the data on their exams that i was grading during break, I was differentiating all of my homeworks and worksheets to reflect guided notes and tiered questioning for the students with disabilities in my classroom, and I attended a webinar on our new grading book system. Just saying.

NYC DOE closed!
I am a teacher in a Catholic school in Queens, we are closed today. My kids are all home, my DH is home, but trust me...I wish the snow wasn't bad and everyone was at school today! Everyone was up at 6:45. We have already done breakfast, built with legos, played with play doh, watched Peppa Pig, heard the boys whine that the girls were watching Peppa when they wanted Ninjago, crying because ipads are dead and are currently being charged, and bad moods because we are telling them them they can't go out and play. HOWEVER, even with the torture chamber my house is today, I am beyond grateful that we are all home and safe. I didn't post on FB, but so what if I did?? I LOVE my job. A LOT. But I like being alive more.

I love all the Sanctimommy's on this thread! I like my job, been there over 11 years....yesterday was my first day back after TWO SOLID WEEKS OFF! and guess what? I was praying yesterday for a snow day today and pretty sure we will have one tomorrow too! While I love my job , I love being home more. For the people complaining they can't go to their jobs, I feel bad for you. You must have miserable lives if you don't know how to do a snow day right, lol! I just got up at 9 am after staying up late watching tv. Of course I didn't drink wine though, I had a few bourbons!!!! Everybody else, enjoy your day if you got to stay home, I sure as hell am!

So I just scrolled back through the thread to see and to be honest it was only one person...so I don't see all the Sanctimommy's....only one. Everyone else disagreed.
I did however say that I don't love the fact that DD is home again after a long break. But that is because she is driving me nuts while I'm trying to work and do conference calls and we already had a fight this morning!

They don't get the concept of the fact that im still working on snow day.
