I will be one of the first to say that this really wasn't a terrible storm. It did not warrant a day off. BUT a delay would have helped.

Let me say AGAIN, as I did on another thread, that this was a BAD storm for my entire area and if I was a teacher there is NO WAY that I or anyone around me could have gotten to work if I wanted to. It took my DH THREE HOURS, with HELP, to shovel our DRIVEWAY.

I am shouting yes because I am just so annoyed with people who don't think this storm was bad Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon

I personally don't care if the schools or anyplace else closed but when will people stop saying that it wasn't that bad?!?!?!?!?

I swear I'm not trying to be snarky but we're not discussing your area, which I do believe got hit hard. Topic is NYC schools and in NYC it really wasnt that bad at least in most areas.

I think they are saying it wasn't that bad in NYC (hence the subject of the thread)... which it really wasn't at all.
different areas were hit differently. Sometimes NYC is hit worse than LI... It goes different ways.

That's fine, I get that, but I would venture to say that MOST people who are teachers in NYC don't actually live in NYC.

Really... you would have to take a poll across all the teachers to determine just how many live in NYC or other areas. It's a generalization.
I'm sure there are many that live elsewhere and there are also many that live in NYC; I have quite a few teacher friends who teach for DOE and live in one of the boroughs. Hopefully those living in NYC made it to the schools to make up for those out on LI that couldn't get into the city today.

In my school and my neighbors a majority of teachers not in school today lived in the city....so no make up for LI teachers there.

Forced to take a personal day? How about go to work like many others do when it snows.

How much snow was in your driveway today? Was it still snowing when you left for work? How much snow was on the platform for the LIRR when you waited?

Let's see, there was 10" of snow outside. I am lucky enough to not have to work today, but my DW did. I got up and shoveled her out so she could get to work. She is still at work and won't leave until her day is complete. Sometimes it takes longer to get to work, sometimes you have to wake up early to get to work, and sometimes when you have a day off, you have to get up and help others get to work. No one makes you take a personal day, you choose to take a personal day.

Since you didn't have to work you are not allowed to comment. And I will be thinking about you in the summer sweating on the golf course while I am offChat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon

But the children who go to the schools do and the mayor, DOE, etc. who make the decisions represent the interests of their constituents, i.e. the residents of NYC. I know several people who were forced to take personal days today because they live in LI and their kids go to school in LI and were home even though they work in NYC.

As others have said, in a city full of poor people, there are many, many people who when they have to take a day don't get paid, who live paycheck to paycheck, many children who get their only full meals in school. There are a lot of considerations which I would think are different than suburban schoiols, none of which those of us who aren't the decision makers can fully appreciate.

Right, in my extremely poverty ridden neighborhood in the south Bronx 70% of our school and 87% of the high school students stayed home. I hope they found something to eat. Although I did hear there was a pretty kick *** cartoon marathon on that maybe took their mind off the pangs of hunger.

sorry to hear that.

bottom line is... if you physically cannot get to work then you cannot get into work.
if bloomberg chooses to keep schools open to save money then so be it. But if he eventually has no teachers, then he will only factor that into his decisions in the future... and out weight it against the lost money aspect.
But I don't think NYC will ever make a decision based on the circumstances on LI and vice versa.

unfortunately there just isn't much you can do about it. It's out of your hands.
If he chooses to have schools open and the teachers can't make it in, then it is what it is and is a reflection of him and his decisions.

IMO In your first statement you offered no suggesion of compassion. Just get 'er done attitude. Screw anyone that might have a greater hardship than you kind of attitude. Which is a lot of what I'm seeing people complain about today. It gets frustrating when people can't see outside their own box.

I do often compare my schedule to a teachers, just with the opposite schedule. It is hard to teach people to play golf with 10" of snow on the ground. That being said, I am going to the course tomorrow, can I comment then?

I will say that I'm sure those of you who are upset over not having a snow day today... you will be happy when you aren't working that extra day at the end of the year. You never know what will happen for the rest of the month or feb or march... so depending on the number of actual snow days taken you don't know if you will have to make some up later in the year. It's a give and take.

Actually that doesn't happen. Like I previously said it would have been a wash. We have more days than LI. We actually have more days than the state dictates that we must have. Chat Icon

are you saying it's NEVER happened before?
what if we are hit by a few more blizzards??

Well if you look at the rest of this thread you'll see how NYC has only closed a handful of times in the last 20 years.....2 of which were last year and no we didn't have to make them up.

ETA: And as you said in your post...now Bloomie will go overboard to make sure his roads are cleared= NYC schools will be opened.

sorry... i don't have it in me to read 8 pages of this. I don't mean that snarky either.
I know they don't close often... but they do close at times... I live in queens and went to school in queens, so I know first hand.
What my question really was.... Why have I heard many times throughout years, teachers complaining at the end of the year for days being tacked on due to days they had to take throughout the year?? Are those days that were taken for other things?? I know with 100% certainty that there have been teachers who complained about this... so I'm a bit confused because it seems to be the opposite of what you are saying.
Did they add more days of school on as of recently (within the last few years?).... resulting in a change on the possible tack on of days?

LI builds snow days into their schedule. Not the city. So where LI gets 5 days off for Memorial Day, the city only gets the Monday. If there is a blizzard and LI schools closed then they lose the extra vacation days.

Going overboard to make sure roads are clear seems like a good result to me, even if it means schools are open and teachers are forced to take personal days. People died because ambulances couldn't get through unplowed streets last time.

I'm unemployed (again) so I slept until 11. Probably do the same tomorrow. Thanks though. My DH is a teacher though (hence the only reason I took to this debate).

Though some public officials might say that to cover up the real reason they keep schools open.

I totally see what you are saying about the area and it being poor and kids not having food except for in school... but in this case they CHOSE to stay home?? Schools were open today and they could have gone into school.
I get the young kids may have stayed home based on a parental decision... but the HS kids could commute alone to school.
Regardless, this was a decisions to stay home... so I'm sure they found food somewhere.
I'm not being snarky here either... I'm just confused with the anger of them staying home and having no food when it was their decision to do so.

ETA: still though I stand by what I wrote previously about a NYC school being open despite LI having more snow. NYC will not make a decision to close schools based on LI snow levels... jsut as LI wouldn't make a decision to close their schools based on NYC snow levels.

Oh no I am not angry they stayed home and had no food I am sure they ate enough McDonalds to satisfy themselves. I am commenting on how many people have said they need to keep school open so the children can eat which most certainly was not the case in my experience.

Chat Icon Do you know how many of my students entitled to free breakfast and lunch are food snobs and refuse to eat the cafeteria food? Chat Icon Thank goodness we were opened today so they could eat! Chat Icon

LI builds snow days into their schedule. Not the city. So where LI gets 5 days off for Memorial Day, the city only gets the Monday. If there is a blizzard and LI schools closed then they lose the extra vacation days.

Just wanted to say LI schools only get 1 or 2 days off for Memorial Day...and not all schools build snow days into their calendar. My mother's school announced a snow day AND the day they would be losing in May because of it. My school is amazing and gives us 3 snow days without punishment.

Not that that has anything to do with the debate going on....I just wanted to clarify.

That's fine, I get that, but I would venture to say that MOST people who are teachers in NYC don't actually live in NYC.

But the children who go to the schools do and the mayor, DOE, etc. who make the decisions represent the interests of their constituents, i.e. the residents of NYC. I'm a golf pro. I teach golf at a golf course. I am sure there are people that complain in my profession, but I'm not one of them.

but can you tell us your handicap?

I don't have a handicap. As a golf pro, I don't need to keep one anymore! I could tell you what it would be, but where is the fun in that.
